LcROY’S PILLS are a new' medicine j which has just appeared, and is fast taking the places of all others of the same class. These pills are composed ol many ingredients, but the two principal are Sarsaparilla and Wild Cherry, so united as to act together; the one, through its admixture with other substances, purifying and purging, while the other is strengthening the system. Thus these pills are at the same time tonic and opening; a desideratum long and eagerly sought for by medical ni6n but never before discovered. In other words, they do the work of two medicines, and do it much better than any two we know.' of, tor they remove nothing from the system but the impurities, so that while they purge they strength en; and hence they cause no debilitation, and are fol lowed by no reaction. Dr. Leßoy's Pills have a wonderful influence on he blood; they not only purify, without weakening j it, but they remove all noxious particles from the . chyle before it is converted into fluid, and thus make ! impure blood an utter impossibility. As there is no | debilitation, so there is no nausea or sickness attend- i ing tbs operations of this most excellent of medicines, | w hich never strains or tortures the digestive functions j but causes them to work iu a perfectly natural man- I ner, and hence persons taking them do not become pale and emaciated, but the contrary, for while it is j the property of the Sarsaparilla, united as it is with I other ingredients, to remove a! hat is foreign and i impure, it is equally the property he Wild Cherry to retain ail that is natural and soun and hence a robust state of health is the certain. lit of their united operations. Certificate from Sir James Clark, the eminent English Physician. ‘Dr. Le Roy’s Vegetable Umversa Pills,’ says the celebrated Sir James Clark, promises fair to, in a great measure, exclude the necessity of the lancet, for they prevent too much fullness of blood, by forcing from the chyle all impure matter, which would otherwise be converted into fluid, and taint all the rest; and the blood which is formed under their influence must, from the nature of their principal component parts, be pure and healthy. In my private practice 1 have ex cluded nearly every other cathartic in their favor; and the more 1 use them, the more my confidence in their virtues is confirmed. They unite extremes which were Jieretofure considered paradoxical by the faculty ; that is, they are a strengthening purgative and a purifying tonic; hence they may at all times 1 be administered without hazard, no matter how weak or debilitated the patient may be —insomuch as their conservative properties are precisely in the ratio of their purgative effects —so that while they evacuate the bowels in the most thorough manner, they also trengthen and tone them. Prom the Morning Chronicle, Dec. 11. 1345. One might think that people had discovered the Elixir ol life and were to die no more from the hub bub they are making about the new medicine —Dr. Le Roy’s Pills —the virtues of which all men are ex tolling to their neighbors. NY e have taken pains to as certain the truth of the mutter and are able to say up on sound authority that Dr. Leroy’s Vegetable Univer- 1 sal Pills are deserving of all that can be said in their | favor and combine opposite and admirable qualities j never before united in a medicine; thoseof purgatives j and tonics. The pills of Dr. Leroy have caused al- ' most as great a commotion among the pu lie as the 1 writingsot Boz ; and wili probably render their dis- i coveiei equally immortal. / rom the Medical 'l'imes, Sept. 18, 1845. Op posed as we are to modern patent medicines, we caimut bo silent to tiie vj. lues ot Dr. Leßoy’s much lauded discovery. His Pills are indeed a purgative which may be taken without a risk, or the advice of a physician; for they produce evacuation without weakness, and cause energy in the digestive functions without straining them and thus paving the way for reaction and apathy. I CHRONICLE & SENTINEL. POETRY AND MISCELLANY* — _ MEANING OF WORDS. We know ihe meaning of most words By sound as well as sight; They mean , although they have no mien, So mind and write them right. For thus—in ‘ eccentricity,’ One sees goodvnany c's, Also in ‘ bubbubberousV The b's are thick as bees. There are no Vs in English 4 eyes,' But e's there are in 1 ease' /I does want ye to make it ‘ aye There’s but one p in peas. Some judges judge the English tongue, But kill it with a breath; With wind and words they sentence some Fine sentences to death. A sea-horse is a sea-horse, when You see him in the sea; But when you see him in a hay, A bay horse then is he. Os course, a race course is not coarse, A fine is far from fine ; If is a saddening sight to see A noble pine tree pine. If miners ar» all minors , then Their guardians get their gains; AH glaziers extra pains should lake To put in extra panes. A kitchen maid is often made To burn her face and broifeit; A lady knows no labor, but To toil at her toilet! How do you do? said Sal to John ; ‘ So, so,' replied he: ‘ How do you do V said John to Sal ? ‘ Sometimes sew, sew,' said she. If one were riden over a lot, He might his lot bewail; But ’mould be no use to him To rail against a rail. A bat about a farmer’s room, Not long ago I knew To fiy. He caught a fiy —and then fi'ltw up the chimney fiue. But such a scene never was seen (I am quite sure of that) As when with sticks all hands essayed To hit the bat a bat. A vane is vain, one would suppose, Because it wants a mind ; And, furthermore, ’tis blown about By every idle wind. ’Tis pun-ishment for me to pun; ’Tis trifling, void of worth; So let it pass unnoticed, like The dew that’s due to earth. “ Brevity is the Soul or Wit.”—A cor respondent of the Charleston Courier gives the following illustrations of this old maxim: I A quakeriu Utica, writing to his young wife, j then on a visit to New York, addresed her as follows: Wife Dorothy.—’Tis said thy behaviour is indis creet and unbecoming a chaste matron, wife of a member of friends. Thy spouse. Jonathan. To which she replied— Friend Jonathan—Thee liest, dear! indeed thou dost! Thy Dorothy walketh not in the ways of the ungodly, and sittelh not in the seats of the scornful, but sauntere'h in green pastures; my language is, yea, nay, and verily. Thy rib. Dorothy. There is still a brighter example of the beau ty and purity of a laconic style—to be found in the writings of those, whom that colossus of literature, Johnson, in compiling his mammoth dictionary, regalded as the highest standard of pure English. The Dukes Buckingham and Devonshire, were warm and inseparable friends ; Bucking | ham married a lady ofrank, beauty and fortune; ; on his nuptial morn he wrote thus: Dear Devonshire—l am the happiest dog alive. N ours, Buckingham. i The reply was— Dear Buckingham—Every dog has his day. Yours, Devonshirb . Rum Shops in the Capitol.—We learn fromthe Columbian Fountainthat the Secretary of the Senate has recently ordered the keep ers of Refectories in the Capitol, to vacate the premises. The Capitol has too long been used as a rum shop, and if the honorable gentlemen who have hitherto patronized these places, will still continue to imbibe the drunkard’s drink, let them at least go from beneath the folds of our country's dag, to get it.— Ex. Warning to Tipplers. —Yesterday we re ceived a $1 bill on the Farmers’ Bank of Can ton, Ohio, No. 664, letter B. , dated January, 1835, on the back of which is written in a plain hand, the following : “ Friends, take warning, This is the last dol lar which 1 possess, ofa fortue of $30,000.
