BY OUR EXPRESS. i ONE DAY IN ADVANCE OF THE MAIL, j In looking through several extracts from j South American papers copied into Havana ■ journals, we see that the presence of General Flores so near the South American Republics 1 is causing great uneasiness. From Kingston 1 they say he will be able to hold frequent and close communication with Ecuador, and al though New Grenada will not allow him to cross the Isthmus, still his proximity is deemed suspicions, and it is feared will lead to distur bances in Ecuador.— JV. O. Picayune. Condemned to be Hung.— Two Slaves — Jim, belonging to Mr. Harvey and wife, and Diek. belonging to Mr. Destraban, of the parish of Jefferson—were tried on Thursday last for the murder of Gabriel, a slave also belonging to Mr. Destraban, on Christmas night. The evi dence against Jim was conclusive, but Dick, was not so clearly connected with the murder, although sufficient evidence was produced to show his participation in it. Jim was condemn ed to be hung, and Dick sentenced to receive one hundred lashes, to be imprisoned eight days, and wear irons iu the service of bis mas- \ ter for one year. For the prosecution, F. Perm, District Attor ney ; for s he prisoners. T. W. Collens, who de fended them in an able and zealous manner.— -V. O. Picayune. A Large Tow.—The tow-boat Hercules, Capt. Brown, brought up yesterday four ships from the bar to the city, combining the largest number of tons ever brought up by any tow boat, particularly at this stage of water; and, considering the quantity of drift that is floating inglhe river, proves that the H. is a powerful boat. The names of the ships are as follows: British ship Viceroy, tons burthen 1100 British ship Alice Wilson, tons burthen 1025 American ship John G. She, at an early period, embraced the Christian religion, and was a true follower of Christ to the day of her death. She died, as all Christians die, with the full assurance of meeting Iter God in peace; lor j jst as the sun began to brighten the eastern horizon, her sun went down, without a cloud or a va(>or to darken her eternal day ; So let her sleep, she’s with the blest; Her God hath called her home to rest — For when she left this world of strife, She gladly hailed immortal life, Where troubles nor afflictions come, While time its onward course shall run But with the saints she’ll rest in peace, W hen time on earth will have to cease. These Scale* are made by skilful and experienced workmen, of the I best materials, and no care or expense is spared to make them perfectly accurate and durable. They j are used far more extensively at the north than any I other kind, and almost exclusively in the Rail Roads, Navy Yards and heavy Manufactories. They have been patented in England, and are manufactured ex tensively in Liverpool, being in use in almost all the large Railways, and in many of the Warehouses. Wherever used in the United States or in foreign countries they have given general satisfaction, and j are regarded in the principal mercantile cities as the i standard of correct w eighing. The subscribers sell their Scales at uniform price I throughout the United States; and while they cannot i enter into competition with the manufacturers of : cheaper and imperfect Scales, they believe that on ac ; count of their very great durability, and the confi dence which may be placed in them, in the end they are the cheapest Scale in use. Other Scales are made in imitation of these, and ofien sold as Fairbanks’ Scales, which are very imperfect articles, and after a few months use will become very inaccurate. W. &J. NELSON, next door to Gould & Bulk ley, are cur authorised Agents, who will give refer ences to those who have had these Scales long in use, jaS-dtw&wl E. <fc T. FAIRBANKS & CO. JUST RECEIVED.
