Accounts from Ireland are truly distressing. Deaths from starvation are staled to aave taken place throughout the land. Political strife runs high between the three national parlies there. The subdivided pt-rty from the Vnung Ireland are vehement in their arguments for an immediate appeal to am s against Kngland but reprobated by the other*. France. Is in a somewhat more tranquil condition than heretofore, hut angry discussions con in e to take place in the Chamber of Deputie-. Reform banquets have been denounced as ille gal and are to be prohibited in the future. The health ofthe King has come round. The over land mail bring.- intelligence rather more sati*- faeiory than that received by the previous mail litdia. Trade %vas still depressed in India, but no j additional fai’ures of English houses had taken O place. Switzerln n«l. The news from Switzerland does not possess much interest. The Diet is firmly resolved, to maintain the rights of the country as a iree and independent Stale. Thk Treat*. —By a private letter lately re ceived in lifts city, we learn that the ratification of me treaty is considered certain by Mr Cal houn. In conversation with a gentleman ot this city. Mr. C. slated that he had not the slight est doubt of the result. Snr. Hep. Vesuvius Mrs a— Heci.a. —Among the most remarkable volcanoes are \ esnrius, Lt ua, and Hecl i. Tiie ernp’ions of Vesnviua.in limes past, have been very destructive to life and properly. The long intervals between its paroxysms, extending sometimes nearly a cen tury. caused a belief to prevail that it was ex tinct for ever, when suddenly it would cast up its fiery rivers and spread desolation far and wide. ' Tims in the first century it covered up those llourisbing Roman cities, Pompeii and Herculaneum, and in later times it has buried cities and people in one vast ruin. Etna, in the island of Bicily, is another re markable volcano, and has performed its full share in the tragedies of destruction. In the dim, fabulous age, it was regarded with reve rence as the workshop of Vulcan —the place of his forge, where he made the armor ofthe gods; and in all times it has claimed the pro found homage ofthe traveller and the philoso pher. The eruptions of Etna are periodic, and generally very violent. The most lemark able one took place in the year JGoJ, when fif teen towns and villages, with many thousands of inhabitants, were destroyed. 8o deep was the stream of red hot lava that it flowed over the walls of Catania, sixty feet in .height. But probably the most remarkable volcano of all, and the "least minutely known, is Hecla, in Iceland. Within eight hundred years, it has been in a state of violent eruption more than twenty times, and on one occasion it poured forth a stream of burning lava so groat that it tilled and dried up a river, and even overflow ed its hanks, notwithstanding it was in some pi aces six hundred feet deep, and nearly two hundred feet wide. Randall on the merit of Wisfar’s Balsam of Wild Cherry : We 1 lave been induced, in consequence of the benefits received from this medicine, to add our testi mony in favor ol its extraordinary healing properties. We take great pleasure in staling that wc have fre quently used it ourself' and administered it to oth ers during the past year, in cases »f obstinate coughs, colds, soreness of the chest, tfv;., and always with the most happy result. The M ild Cherry is an excellent tonic, possessing astringent and aromatic properties, which make it valuable in Dyspepsia, Jaundice, v V cakness of the Stomach and Chest. The Sarsaparilla is demulcent, dieuretic and soothing, and is given in Rheumatism, Scrofula, Dis eases of the Skin, and to eradicate the bad effects of Mercury. In the operations of ail other purgative medicines debilitation and purification go hand in hand; they remove the good us well as the bad, thus weakening the system w hich they were only requir ed to cleanse, and making the cure, generally, al most as bad, and frequently much worse, than the disease. Dr. Leßoy’s Fills, on the contrary, strength en and tone ihe system which they purge and purify. And this is their peculiar attribute, and .he pi iucipal cause of their unrivalled popularity. F. COTTON. —The market during the last week has exhibited little animation —all parlies were in hourly expectation of the European accounts per Britannia, consequently the operations were confined to small lots. On Monday morning a telegraphic despatch was received announcing the arrival of the steamer, i i with a decided improvement in the cotton market. j The quotations were, however, not very satisfactory, 5 i and the operations were not large. This morning, however, the despatches were more j ‘ decisive as to the extent of the advance, and an ani < i mated business has been done, extending to 10 to 1200 bales at an advance of full j cent upon our quotations of last week, and in some instances, more on the lower qualities. The prices to-day have not been very regular, but we think sufficiently steady to [ authorize the following quotations : Ordinary to Mid j illi ng. Cl at ; Good Middling to Middling Fair, at 7 ; Fair 7J at 7| cents. The sales of the week from Warehouses sum up 2,485 bales, at least half of which were sold to day, as follows ; 2at 5 ; sat s}-; 13 at 5J ; 73 at 5f ; 32 at s|; 21 at 5 13-16; 11 at s|; 52 at 6; 33 at 61 ; 1 133 at 6j ;75at 6 5-16 ;91 at (if ; 120 at 64 ;6at i 6 11-16; 174 at 6j; 425 at 61; 66 at 6 13-16 ; 123 at 65 ; 846 at 7 ; 170 at 71; and 9 bales at 7J- cents. FLOUR AND CORN. —The market during the | week has remained us previously quoted, with limit* : cd sales, but as the late foreign accounts show a de -1 ’ dine in both articles, they may possibly depreciate in value in this market, we therefore omit quotations. BACON. —As the season advances the increased supply, exceeding far iho present demand, has had the effect of depressing prices. We hear of no sale above 6 cents for Hog round. SALT—W e have no change to notice in this arti ■ cle —the stock is very light and prices are very firm. EXCHANGE—Continues abundant on die North ! at - tier cent, premium, and par upon Charleston and j I Savannah. FREIGHTS—Are without change. The river is , i in fine boating order for our heaviest draft boats. -j CHARLESTON, Marc It 7. — Cotton. —The Cot ton market was very much excited yesterday in con ■ sequence of the rece’pt of a telegraphic despatch an- ] I nouncing the arrival 0: the steamer Britannia at Bos ton, with advices show ing an improvement in prices 1 ! ou the other side. The transactions sum up 3100 bales, and factors obtained the asking prices of the previous week freely, which establishes an advance of fully an £c. The sales comprise 87 bales at 6f ; 1 42 at 6| ; IC9 at 64; 9 at 6f; 14 at 61; 10 at 6|; 43 at 7; 185 at 7&; 456 at 7|; 168 at 7 5-16; 687 at 7§; 533at7i; 93at7J, and a fancy lot of 122 bales at S cents. Rice. —The Rice market was very quiet yester day—sales about 200 tierces, from £3 to *3 5-16 per 100. No change in pr cos. SAVANNAH, March 6. — Colton. —The market was dull 011 Saturday, and but little Cotton offering. The ‘ales were 500 bales without change in prices. EXPORTS. j SAVANNAH.
