COLLECTOR AND TREASURER’S
NOTICE.
fjf’The Citizens of Augusta, and others
liable for City Taxes, will please take notice that the
Tax Digest for the present year has been completed
by the Clerk of Council and handed over to me for
collection. I shall be in my office (next door above
the Mechanics’ Bank) daily for ten days, from 9
o’clock, A. M,, to P. M., to settle with all who
will be so kind as to save me the trouble of dunning
them ; and I hope to be honored with many calls.
That the construction of the Augusta Canal will
greatly promote the growth and prosperity of the
city, is now no longer problematical; and I hope the
citizens who are in arrears for Canal Tax, will come
forward and cheerfully share in the enterprize by
Raying U P, without the disagreeable process of execu
tion, levy and sale. By the decision of the Supreme
Court, the right of the Council to collect that tax, is
affirmed, and the injunction lately carried up to that
Court for adjudication is finally dissolved.
JOHN HILL.

Pulmonary Consumption—From its
having almost always baffled the most skilful medical
treatment, has very justly been termed the “ Oppro
brium of Physicians and, until within a few years,
been generally considered incurable , although many
medical men of the highest standing, among whom
we may mention Laennec and his friend Baylk—
both distinguished authors, admit that this much
dreaded disease may be cured , even in its advanced
stages , when the lungs are not completely disorga
nized. The remedy which we now offer, Wistar’s
Balsam of Wild Cherry for the cure us this disease,
not only emanates from a regular Physician, but has
also been weU tested in all the complaints for which
it is recommended. A physician in Maine says ;
I have recommended the use of Dr. Wistar’s Bal
sam of Wild Cherry for diseases of the lungs, for two
years past, and many bottles to my knowledge have
been used by my patients, all with beneficial results.
In two cases, where it was thought confirmed Con
sumption had taken place, the Wild Cherry effected
a cure. E. BOYDEN,

AVGUSTA MARKET.
Trl-Weekly Report Thursday,?. M.
COTTON.—The market yesterday and to-day haa
been firm with a good demand, at full prices. Ten
dency upward.
The River is in fine navigable condition and rising
SAVANNAH, May B.— Cotton.— Arrived since
the Ist inst., 8,563 bales Upland, (4,420 bales from
Augusta, 92 from Darien, 4,051 per Railroad,) and
239 do. Sea Island. The exports for the same pe
riod have been 9,472 bales Upland, and 461 do. Sea
Island, viz: to Liverpool 1,501 bales Upland and 214
do. Sea Island; to Hull 1,496 bales Upland and 104
do. Sea Island; to Wexford 121 bales Upland; to
Havre 2,977 bales Upland and 25 do S. Island; to
N York 2,691 bales Upland and 118 do. S. Island; to
Philadelphia 356 bales Upland, and to Charleston 330
bales Upland —leaving on hand and on shipboard not
cleared, a stock of 33,961 bales Upland and 1,068
bales S. Island—against 24,606 bales Upland and
2,778 bales S. Island same time last year. The re
ceipts since Ist September exceed those of last year
163,573 bales, and the exports 158,171 bales. The
receipts at this port to date are 68,847 bales greater
than in any previous year.
At the close of our last weekly report the market
was quite unsettled and the transactions for the three
previous days had been very limited. On Wednes
day the market presented the same general features,
the sales being only 229 bales. On Thursday the
letters by the Cambria were at hand and buyers
seemed more willing to operate, but their offers did
not suit the sellers. The result was the sale of 954
bales at about $ cent decline from the prices which
were paid before the Cambria’s news was telegraph
ed. On Friday there was a rumor of further foreign
advices and consequently nothing done; we heard of
but one sale for the day, a lot of 35 bales; on Satur
day morning there was a pretty full telegraphic re
port of the markets by the America; there was how
ever but little inquiry and only 126 bales sold. On
Mandaythe aalea were 300 bales and ysstsrday 777
bales. On reviewing the market we find that our
quotations compared with those two weeks since, are
i c * lower on ordinary and good ordinary, and Jc. on
middling, middling fair and fair; the finer qualities
ere scarce and are not offered.
The reports of the injury by the frost, confirm the
remarks we made two weeks since, and unless the
planters have timely rains soon, the injury from
droughth in some parts of the country will be almost
as great as by the frost. We quote to-day :—Ordina
ry to good ordinary 6 a 6i ; middling to good mid
dling a6f ; middling fair 7$ a—; fair 7$ a—.
The particulars of the week’s sales amounting to
’ 2,439 bales, are as follows: —2O atss; 114 at 6; 235
at 6i; 80 at 6f; 9at 6 5 16; 553 at 6s; 77 at 6 11-16;
353 at 6|; 183 at 6»; 124 at 6f; 120 at 7; 148 at
359 at and 62 at 7| cents.
Sea Islands. —There has been the same dullness
in Long Cottons that we have noticed in Uplands,
and only the following sales have been reported, a
mounting to 124 bales, viz: 6 at 14; 4 at 14i: and
114 at 14 a 17 cts.

Rice. —There has been very little done this week
in the Rice market, the sales amounting to but little
more than 100 tierces, at prices ranging from 2 11-16
to s2{ per 100 lbs. There has been a good inquiry,
but buyers and sellers could not agree upon terms.
Flour. —100 bbls. Western Canal sold at $6.
Corn. —We hare no cargo sales to report this week.
The transactions by retail have been at about 62|c.,
or 65c. including sacks.

Gunny Ctoth. —14 bales sold at 18£ cts cash, and

Freights. —Foreign are extremely dull, the nomi
nal rate to Liverpool being 5-16 and fd. Freights to
most coastwise ports are lower than last week, and
dull. The rates to New York are jc. for square and
5-16 for round bales Cotton ; to Boston 5-16 and 7-16,

MACON, May 9.— Cotton. —We note but little
change in the prices of last week. A few sales have
perhaps been made at a shade off; but those who have
the means to hold seem to rely with great confidence
upon an advance in consequence of the destruction of
the crop by the frost. This is now reduced to a cer
tainty and a corresponding fluctuation in the market
may be anticipated. We quote extremes at s£c. a
6| cents.
MOBILE, May 5, P. M. — Cotton. —The sales
were light to-day, the America’s arrival and the ru
mor that her accounts are unfavorable, having some
what disturbed the market. Abont 600 bales were
sold at yesterday’s prices.

NEW ORLEANS, May 5. — Cotton. —The rainy
weather shecked operations in our market yesterday,
and there were, besides, rumors generally circula
ted that the steamer America’s news was in town,
and quite unfavorable for our great staple, Cotton.
The sales, nevertheless, summed up 4500 bales at
about Thursday’s rates, from which we should infer
that this report did not receive general credit.
Sugar and Molasses. —The showry weather pre
vented much from being done in Sugar and Molasses.
There is no change in the rates for either article.
FT.our. —The stock cf Flour is light, a considera
ble portion of it is said to be sour, and shipments to the
North, made within a few weeks, have arrived in
that state at their destination. We could not hear of
any large sales yesterday, except a lot of sour at less
than $4 per bbl.
Corn. —The largest sales of Corn reported were
1600 sacks of white and yellow at 43, and 200 do. at
42c. per bushel. A sale of yellow was made a day
since at 48e., but not reported. Stock very light.
Bacon. —Some small sales at 5| for sides, and 9
casks. Wabash shoulders at 4c. per lb.
Lard. —The principal sales of Lard were 10 bbls.
of grease at 4|, 10 half bbls. at SJ, 50 do. at s£, 243
bbls. and tierces at s|, and 350 do. prime at 6 cents
