crease, now amounting to 783,533 bales, against J
403,635 bales at same date last year—being an ex
cess of 389,893 bales over last year, and as the stocks
in Augusta, Macon and Columbia are comparatively
light, it is not thought that the receipts of those ports
will exceed 850,000 bales which will make the total
of the crop vary very little from 2,650,000 bales. In
these views we are confirmed by a comparative state
ment of the stock at the interior towns of Alabama,
Georgia and Carolina, which will be seen by our
tables only amount to 71,829 bales against 156,905
bales at same date last year.
The foreign exports continue heavy and are not
confined to Great Britain as will be seen by the num
ber of vessels now loading in the Cotton ports for
Prance, being 15 against 5 at same date last year.
The exports to Prance are now only 2,433 bales short
of last year, and will no doubt, from the fact above
stated, exceed them in our next statement. The ex
ports to Great Britain show an excess of 336,489 bales
being 1,243,990 against 907,501 bales at same time
last year. The exports to the North have been very
large yet the stock in New York, it will be seen, is
very little larger than it was last year at same dates,
as the shipment# are now light it will not be much in
creased.
The accounts received by the Canada give encour
aging hopes of a settlement of the Danish question and
of the disturbances generally on the Continent of Eu
rope, Should these difficulties be settled we may
look for a renewal of activity in the Cotton market
and a very considerable improvement in prices, as it
will be seen by an examination of the tables which
we have published, that the stock in Great Britain
is not large and should there be an increased con
sumption would be reduced very low ere they will
receive any thing from this country from the present
growing crop, which must be very late, owing to the
very unpropitious Spring we have had, the truth of
which is confirmed by every day’s information we
receive on the subject.

REMARKS. —The number of strangers in our city
during the past week gave a lively trade both to the
wholesale and retail dealers, and presented quite a
lively appearance to our streets.
GRAIN.— Corn continues scarce and would readi
ly command 62} cts. Tiie receipts for the past week
have been very moderate.
BACON.—There has been some improvement in
the article from the moderate receipts. The stock
on hand is good. Sales continue to be made at 5$ cts
hog round, on short time; a choice lot was disposed of
in small parcels at 6 cts.
FLOUR.—The stock of country Flour is light.
Sales have been made at $6.50. Canal Flour is of
fered at $7 per bbl., and large quantities are on the
way which will further depress prices.
BAGGING AND BALE ROPE.—Our dealers
are already receiving their Pall supplies of Bagging
and Rope; about 700 bales Gunny Bagging have
been already bought for this market. Prices not ye t
established so as to quote the rate of either Bagging
or Rope.
SALT. —Our boats continue to add to our stock of
this article The imports at Savannah and Charles
ton were upwards of 30,000 bushels during the last
week.
FEATHERS. —Sales continue to be made at 28 cts,
at wbich price there is a good demand.
COTTON GOODS.—Our manufactory so far has
not been able to keep up with the demand for their
Goods, but they calculate upon having a supply for
the fall trade; their price is for 7-8 Shirting, 5}0.; yard
wide 7 cents, 6 months and 5 per ct. off for cash.
EXCHANGE. —Checks are abundant at | per ct.
premium, and negotiations are easily made on al
points.
BANK STOCKS.—Nothing has been done this
week in Stocks. The Augusta Bank has declared a
dividend of 4 per ct. for the last six months; Georgia
Rail Road 7 per ct., Bonds have been sold at par.
FREIGHTS. —Our river is in good order, and our
boats are doing a good business both in up and down
freights. The quantity of Cotton shipping for Charles
ton is very moderate.
NEW ORLEANS, May 16, P. M.— Cotton —The
week opened with a steady demand, but owing to the
small stock on sale and to the steadily increasing pri
ces demanded by factors, the sales during Monday
and Tuesday were limited to 7500 bales. To-day
the market offers a larger stock than for some days
past and the demand being very active the sales sum
up 9000 bales making a total for the past three days
of 16,500 bales. The purchases have been principally
for Prance and the Mediterranean, the English buy
ers having operated less extensively; the accounts
from England being less favorable than those from
the Continent. The market closes with firmness at
the annexed quotations: Inferior 5} a 6 ; ordinary 6}
a 6}; L. M. to middling 6| a7 ; good middling 7} a
7i; middling fair 7| a 7}; fair 8 a—; Tennessee

16c. for common, and 17 a 18}c. for Reboiled.
Flour. —The market has been quiet, the sales of
the past three days being confined to 35,000 bbls.,
Ohio and Illinois 34.25 a 4.37, St. L0ui534.40 a 5.12.
Corn. —The demand has been steady but owing to
