NEW-YORK AND SAVANNAH WEEKLY LINE OF OCEAN STEAMSHIPS (SAILING EVERY WEDNESDAY.) Van Boren, M. D. Now. this is really a melancholy ezpose. It affords abundant evidence that the health of large masses of the people of this city is in the hands of physicians of very singular literary attainments, and it is not a hard or unreasona ble thing to infer that the professional man who cannot exoress himself with some degree of precision approaching that of a boy at one of the public schools, cannot have been sub jected to that degree of menial discipline which warrants ary confidence in their medical ca pacity. This is no trifling matter. In all our large Atlantic cities there are large numbers of quacks, chiefly foreigners, German and Irish, who set up as medical practitioners, and doubt less contribute largely to swell the bills of mor tality at such seasons as the present. Then, again, there is an immense quantity of spuri ous and adulterated medicines sold in the drug shops At this moment the epidemic now pre vailing is most violent all along the East River above Grande street —a quarter of the city densely populated by the working classes, and in which there is hardly a dozen safe apothe caries.
