(Eommirrial. Liverpool Markets. Extracts of letters per Steamer Cambria. LIVERPOOL, July 20. —In the early part of the week we experienced an active demand for Cotton ; notwithstanding the comparative quietness during the past three days, the market closes at an advance of id per lb. in all qualities. The business for the week ending this evening is estimated at 76,000 bales, of which speculators have taken 23,000 and exporter* 7,500 bales. Os the American descriptions sold 29,530 are Orleans at 4 a sfd; 14,830 Alabama and Mobile at 4fl a s|d; 17.380 Uplands at 4} a s|d; and 2000 Sea Islands at / a 18d. per lb. Pair Orleans is quoted at s|; fair Mobile s|, and fair Uplands sfc ; middling 4| a sd. per lb. The total stock in this port is placed at 704.000 bales and 537,000 bales American, against 590,00(3 at this period of last year, of which 436,000 were American. The cessation of demand from Ireland and the pro mise of an abundant harvest, have caused much dull ness in our Corn markets with a downward tendency in prices. Indian Corn is quoted at 30 a 32s per quarter nominal, the latter for prime white; old Western Canal Flour 24s 6d a 255; Ohio and Balti more 25s a 25s 6d, and Philadelphia 24s 6d—while a large proportion of the late arrivals being of inferior quality and out of condition are selling at 21s a 23a per bbl. Wheat 5s 9d a7s 3d per 70 lbs., being a decline ot Isa Is 6d per quarter in Indian Corn, 2 a 3d per 70 lbs. in Wheat, and 6d per bbl. in Flour. — Brown, Shipley ts- to. LIVERPOOL, July 20. — Cotton. —The demand from the trade continued unabated, and in the early part of the week was so extensive, that prices of Ame rican, (particularly for the lowci qualities,) advanced filly £d. per Ib.j during the last two days, however, the inquiry has not been so good, and the high rates of Wednesday are barely maintained. Brazils have been in good request, and close in some instances per lb higher. Surat and Egyptian command full rates, but the quotations cannot be advanced. Sea Islands have again been in much favor, both with the trade and speculators, and have further advanced £d. per lb. LIV ERPOOL, July 20.—Cotton advanced boldly early this week without any impulse from the Ame rica’s news of 4th July. Towards the close of the week, however, the demand is less lively and all ex citement is over. The result of these small fluctua tions is that American Cotton rules Jd. per lb. higher than on the 13th July. Sea Islands are largely in demand at rates daily dearer; the current sorts are now 2d. per lb. above the auction of Ist June. LIVERPOOL, July 20. —The transactions in Cot tun have again been extensive. In the early part of the week considerable animation prevailed, and an advance of id. per lb. was obtained on most kinds of American; the demand however, during the la=t two days, has rather subsided, but still a fair extent of business is doing at the above advance, and our quo lationsare altered accordingly. LIVERPOOL, July 20.— Cotton.— The increas ing df-mand for Cotton, noticed in our last Bi-month ly, continued to the end of the month of June, es tablishing an advance of Jd a fd in the current qual ities of American, and |d a£d in East India. Du ring the first two weeks of July the market was un usually animated ; the trade as well as speculators were active, and the daily transactions extensive— the supply on the market at the same f rae being good, prices advanced little more than |d per lb. The sales amounted to 141,300 bales—44,ooo on specula tion and 11,000 for export, leaving 86,000 for the trade. East India descriptions did n«t advance in proportion to American, and have onh been in mode rate request from the trade, the sales being 6600 bales, besides 1000 bales, bought to arrive, on specu lation. The import, has been 3990, and the stock is 46,900 against 65,090 bales. Surats are quoted ord. 3fd, mid. 3fd, fair 3gd, good fair 4d, good Each succeeding account from America confirms the uncertain prospect for next year’s supply. The pre sent crop will barely reach 2,700,000 bales, which has been disposed of a month earlier than usual, leaving a very reduced stock in the ports and interior; and it is now ascertained that our portion of what re mains to be exported in the next six months can amount to little more than half of what we received after 13th July last year, viz : 417,000 bales; and the probability now is, that, notwithstanding this large crop, Great Britain will not receive more Amer ican Cotton in 1849 than she did in 1848. The ac counts from the Continent are more favorable, and the state of the trade in Manchester is brisk, at im proving prices, for export as well as for home con sumption. The salf>s of Cotton, so far this week, will average 10.000 a 12,000 bales per dav, with a firm market. Bowed ord. 4*d; mid. 4Jd; fair s|d, can be had rather lower to-day. — l\ (£• H. HAVRE, July 19- —Cotton has continued in good demand at improving prices; nearly 20,000 bales sold this week, establishing the quotations of 86 for ordinaire New Orleans; f.Bl for tres ordinaire; f. 72 for bas; f. 66 for tres bas ; from 2to 3 fs. less for Mo bile and Uplands. Stock on hand about 50.000 bales. Havre, Thursday evening, July 19. — Yesterday, after the receipt of New York dates to the 4th inst. an active demand sprung up and 5500 bales U. S. Cottons, partly on speculation, were disposed of at an advance of If a 1,50, New Orleans tres ordinaire , having been paid at 80f a 80,50. But to-day, the market has been dull, and very little has been done. The event of the day, is the arrival of M. Guizot, by the Southampton steamer. He is, no doubt, the pre cursor of some new feature. The vessels enter entered since yesterday are the Creole, Judah Tonso, Buena Vista, Diadem, Trenton, Oregon and G. Thatcher, all from New Orleans, bringing a supply of about 15,000 bales. — Cor. Com. Adv. NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 2, P. M. — Cotton. — The accounts by the Europa of the 14th ult. are de cidedly favorabie for our great staple, which circum atence coupled with the disastrous advices from the Cotton growing districts, renders factors very firm, and in consequence we hear ol the sale of only 119 bales, in fbur lots, at full prices, buyers for Europe hesitating to pay the present high rates. The Very Latest from Europe. Bern's Victory over the Russians confirmed !— The second edition of the London Times, pub lished on Friday, has a report of the victory over the Austrio-Russian army, by Gen. Bern as mentioned in the diplomatic circles of Paris. It is also stated that the Hungarians had ob tained further advantages before Comorn. American Stocks are firmly supnorled, and there are no considerable quantities for sale, but demand is not active, and we have no ma terial variation in our quotations to notice. United States 6 percent, bonds, 109 a 1094; Inscriptions, Sterling, 63 a 65 : Massachusets, 1044; Mary land, 90, sellers. No New York fives or Ohio for sale ; Pennsylvania, 81 a 82 ex div ; Indi ana. 60 a 62. ex div. Some of the New York six percent, loan has been exchanged against United Stales six per cents, with 4 per cent, difference, and some considerable purchases have been made of Mississippi Sterling 5 per cent, bonds at2o per cent. In other State securities nothing doing ofinterest. From JVilmer Smith's Times, July 1. The Hermann. —The United States mail steamer Hermann, Captain E. Crabtree, arriv ed at a late hour on Friday night, July 13. at Southampton, from Bremen, after a run of 40 hours. She brought about 100 passengers and 170 tons of cargo from Bremen, all for New York. She look on board at Southampton 800 tons of coal and 300 tons of cargo, the lat ter principally from Havre, and left yesterday with the American contract mails for N. York. The Hermann left Bremen three days before her appointed time in consequence of the blockade ; the Danish Government still refuses to permit the importation ofcoal from England for the use of the American steamers. From the London Times, July 20. Paris, Thursday, July 19. Latest from Paris. —M. de Tracy. Minister of Marine, has presented a bill demanding a credit of 2,140 000 francs for the service of the ships employed in the suppression of the slave trade on the coast of Africa. The demand for the prorogation of the As sembly has been approved by the commission ers to whom it had been referred. One mem ber only objected, on the ground of its being a vote of confidence in Ministers, to whom he was opposed. A serious collision is said to have taken place in Corsica between a balallion of the Pa ris Garde Mobile and the inhabitants. Seve ral soldiers and civilians, it is added, lost their lives during the conflict. The dispute was oc casioned by some insulting epithet applied to the President of the Republic by the Garde Mobile. Marriage of Lola Montes, (Countess of Lans felt.)—This extraordinary lady whose connec tion with late events in Bavaria will be in the recollection of our readers, was married at London. July 19th. to George TratTold Heald, Esq., (of the 2d Life Guards ) The ceremo ny took place first at the French Catholic cha pel, and subsequently at St. George’s church, Hanover Square. Air. Heald is a very young man, stated to have about £14,000 per annum. Melancholy Fate of an JEronaut—Consider able anxiety has prevailed in the vicinity of Cardiff and Swansea, throughout the week, regarding the fate of an aeronout named Green, (not Mr. Charles Green of Vauxhall celebrity,) who, it is feared, perished by falling into the sea in his ascent in a balloon from Cardiff on* Monday last. The balloon was the property of Mr. Wadtnan of Bristol, who had been an nounced to make the ascent, but througli ill ness was prevented. Mr. Green undertook the trip, and took his departure fiomterrafirma about 6 o’clock in the evening. Its coifse on leaving the earth was over the town in the di rection of Penarth, Mr. Green liberating a parachute with a car attached to it as lie passed over. The next morning about 5 o’clock, the bal loon was discovered at Wadmore in Somer setshire. lying on the ground, about three parts filled with gas and not at all injured. No one was with it, but in the car a coat, neck tie, pair of boots and a pocket handkerchief were found. Inquiries have been made along that part of the coast after Mr Green, but nut the least in telligence can be elicited of his fate. At dusk on Monday evening, the coastguard perceived a balloon crossing the Severn in the direction of Cardiff. It was close th the sea when dis covered, and one party saw it dragging through the sea, and suddenly ascend to a great altitude. This leads to a supposition that Mr. Green abandoned it to save himselfby swimming, but perished in the effort.— John Bull. Commercial. From JVilmer and Smith's Times. Throughout the past week we have had a steady business going forward in most depart ments of trade. The produce markets are well supplied, a healthy feeling continues to pre vail, and a fair extent of business has again been done at steady prices. Cotton has been very animated, and large sales are again reported. The Grain markets are dull, and prices, as the harvest approaches, show symp. toms of decline. The metal trade is steady. Money continues to be abundant, and En glish securities have still further advanced. On Friday consols for money opened at 93 and closed at 92£ a 93. Bank stock, 198 to 200. Exchequer bills, 48 a 51 premium. Cotton Market. —The sa'es of Cotton for the week ending the evening of the2oih, amounted to 76,490 bales, of which speculators took 25,- 560 bales, exporters 7,500. The market, in the early part of the week was active, and closed yester day at a further advance of£d per lb., for all descrip tions. The committee’s official quotations are as fol lows, viz, Fair Upland 5Jd ; I air Mobile s*; fair Orleans s|d ; Middling 4f a sd. The sales yester day, 20ih July, were 8,000 bales—the market closing steady at the above quotations. The present stock of Cotton in Liverpool is 704,300 bales, against 539,970 bales this time last year. Breadstuff's. —There has been no activity in the market for breadstuffs—on the contrary, it is rather depressed, and prices lower than at the sailing of the Europa. Old Western Canal Flour is selling at 24 to 25s ; Ohio and Baltimore, 25 a 25s 6d ; Philadel phia, 24s 6d ; while a large proportion of the late ar rivals at this port, being of an inferior quality and out of order, is selling at 21 a 235. per bbl. American wheat is held atss9d a 7s 3d. per 70 lbs. Indian corn is quoted at 30 a 32s per quarter the latter being the price of prime wheat. The prospects of the harvest throughout all parts of the United Kingdom are very encour aging and satisfactory. The reports from the continent of Europe, relative to the state of the growing crops and probable result of the harvest, are of rather a conflicting character ; but as there is a natural disposition to exag gerate any circumstance likely to have an un favorable influence, and a corresponding un- | willingness to make admissions where the pros- i pects are good, we are inclined, from the gen eral tenor of the advices, to come to the con clusion that there is not much to complain about. During a great part of June the weath er seems to have been wet and cold in most of the northern counties, but July set in warm. Business in Wheat had been dull at the leading ports, but the smallness of the stocks and the knowledge that prices had risen here, caused i holders to demand full terms for Wheat. During the last few days considerable sales have been made of all descriptions of Iron. The armistice now arranged between Den mark and Prussia has caused an advance of about 2s per ton on Scotch Pig. The prospect of an early and abundant harvest, and the con tinuance of easy discounts and abundance of money, lead to buoyant expectations, but as yet without excitement. The market is firm at the following ({notations, with a tendency to improvement: Merchant Bar, £5 10s.; best Rolled, £7; Hoop, £7 10s. ; Sheet, £8; Scotch Pig (nett cash) £2 15s. The accounts from the manufacturing dis- I tricts of Lancashire and Yorkshire are still of an encouraging nature.
