Who shall embody thee, since every heart Shaping from self alone Conception of its own, Doth o’er thee its peculiar mantle cast 1 Sometimes thou watchest o’er the solemn Past, Like sweet Cordelia o’er the couch of Lear. Smoothing with pious hands his snowy hair, Or blue-eyed Spring, a virgin debonair, By Winter’s shrouded bier! Sometimes thousorrowest o’er departed Youth, Like Venus by Adon—sometimes like Ruth, Thou stealest behind the wasteful reaper, Time, Gleaning with needful care whate’r he leaves— Remembrance of faded hope and prime, The loose ears shaken from his garnered sheaves ? Sometimes thou eittest like a maiden lone, In pleasant dreams of Youth, thy true love flown, Reading his burning letters o’er for hours, Kissing the relics of his withered flowers, Pressed in pages of a favorite bpok, Opening thy casket twenty times to look, Glowing and weeping, o’er its treasured things, Love gifts, and tokens, precious gems and rings, And more than all, the miniature of old, Thick-set with jewels in a case of gold! A widow in the soul’s deserted halls, Entranced in reveries of its pleasures fled, Communing with the picluresof the walls, The portrait of the lost and hallowed dead! A mourner, pale and wan, and dissolved in tears, Flitting amid the sepulchres of years, Clasping the urns, and strewing flowers above The mouldering dust of Hope, and Faith, and Love ! 11. Thou hast a thousand votaries, Memory, A thousand happy mortals delight in thee, What dost thou want with me 7 I love thee not —Enchantress, thou dost ruse In mockery the ghosts of vanished days! A host of shrouded spectres near my mirth, And haunt me, dashing with remorseless hands The brimming chalice of Delight to earth, Spilling the bravest wine on thirsty sands! I would—l must forget my early life, My feverish dreams, my wild ambitious strife, The early fading of my hope and truth, , The deep and wasting passion of my youth— Away ! no more of that; in mercy cease, And give my tortured heart a moment’s peace! 1 have a hell within me —is it naught! Stretch me no longer on the rack of Thought! There are some chords of feeling, tender chords, A touch would break, they are so nearly broken ; And some impassioned words, but hopeless words, Must never more be spoken ! 1 never summoned thee, Thou sybil, Memory! Away! and leave me free ! I sigh—but oh ! —*tis not for thee I sigh; 1 thirst —but pass thy maddening breaker by ; I sigh for rest, I thirst for Lethe’s wave, And hope, ere long, to find them in the grave ! Miserere mei! Kyrie Eleyson ! How to Ruin a Son.—l. Let him have his own way. 2. Allow him free use of money. 3. Suffer him to roam where he pleases on the Sabbath. 4. Give him full access to wicked compan* ions. 5. Call him to no account of his even ings- 6. Furnish • him with no stated employ ment. Pursue either of these ways, and you will ex ■ perience a most marvellous deliverance, or will have to mourn over a debased and ruined child! Thousands have realized the sad result, and have gone mourning to the grave. Precisely, that is the right way to ruin a son. Everybody knows it, for it is an everyday ob servation. No one need go astray who wishes to accomplish such an object; there are exam ples all along our path of life. —Mobile Adverti ser. The First Steamboat on the Mississippi. —The first steamboat that entered the Missis sippi was the Enterprise. This was in 1815, it was only about 70 tons burthen. She took 28 days to go from New Orleans to Cincinna ti. The price of passage was $130; passage now averages 5 days. The Enterprise had a single wheel placed in the stern. She was a great wonder then.
