AUGUSTA MARKET. Friday, P. M. COTTON.—There was an active demand to-day for old and new Cotton; all that was offered was bought up at full prices. A crop lot of 65 bales old Cotton classing Good Middling was sold to-day at 9} cents. Good loads of new Cotton readily brought 10 cents—some very choice 10} cents. CHARLESTON, Sept. - 21. — Cotton. — At the time that we made up our former report the Cotton market was very quiet, and thus it continued during the eaily part of the week under review—Friday and Saturday last—the operations during these two days having been limited to some 600 bales ; so far. how ever, as prices are concerned, the quotations of the 14th inst. were fully sustained. On Mondey a mo derately fair demand prevailed, and at the close of bu siness about 1000 bales had changed hands, and there was a decided upward tendency in prices when com pared with the rates paid at the close of the preceding week. Tuesday was comparatively an active day, the sales having reached between 1200 and 1300 bales, and it was most generally conceded that hold ers in most instances had obtained a decided advan tage over buyers; if, however, there was any doubt on the subject, the position of the market on the fol lowing day more clearly established the fact. Al though there was a fair demand for the article on Wednesday, the transactions did not exceed 600 bales, owing to the high positions that holders had as sumed, the most of which was taken for Spain at a high price, and did not rate over fair qualitv. Yes terday the sales were confined to 360 bales,’ making the aggregate sales of the week 3768 bales. The market is decidedly more favorable to sellers at the close of the week than it was at its commencement, which in a great measure is to be attributed to the very limited amount of Cotton offering. The stock on the Ist instant was estimated at 21,000 bales, which is now reduced to 13,000 bales, but a limited jKirtion of which can be brought into market at even present prices, as high as they may seem to be. The quotations which we annex will give a fair criterion of the value of the different qualities, from which it will be seen by comparing them with those current this day week, that prices at the close of business yesterday were an }to }c. belter. The actual trans actions are as follows, viz : 18 bales at 8; 10 at 8}; 154 at S}; 41 at 8f; 40 at 8|; 2 at 85; 87 at 9; 66 at 9?; 70 at 9|; 103 at 9}; 39 at 9 9-16; 81 at 9f; 211 at 9}; 47 at 9 13-16;'135 at 95; 1282 at 10; Bat 105; 429 at 10}; 116 at 10 5-16; 87 at lUf; 11 at 10 7-16; and 163 bales at 10}c. We quote Ordi nary to good ordinary 8} a 91; middling to good mid dling 9§ a 9f; middling fair 9§ a 10; and fair and fully fair 10} a 10}c. We continue to receive very i Unfavorable accounts from the West in relation to the crop now maturing, and even in the Atlantic States the advices are not as favorable as they were a short time since. The market has been very quiet for the qualities classed under the head of Long Cotton, the transactions having been confined to about 50 bales Sea Island, at prices ranging from 12 to 25c. The demand during the week has been quite limited. The sales have been within the range of 3} to 3} up to 3} and $3 9-16lhs for prime parcels. Corn. —There was an arrival of about 1,000 bu shels Western in sacks, which were sold at 61c., sacks included. About 1,000 bushels Georgia have changed hands at 62}c. pier bushel, of 56 lbs., to be delivered at the depot. Flour. —The market at the close of the previous week, it will be recollected, was very much depress ed, and prices at the time were reported to have a downward tendency. Since that period a decided reduction has taken place in Baltimore and Philadel phia descriptions, which to a great extent comprise the supply on sale. The market opened at prices ranging from 6 to s|. and subsequently fell to $5? per bbl. The transactions even at these prices have been limited, and the market was depressed at the close of the week. Extra brands are still held at s6} per bbl. Hav. —North River and Eastern, we understand, have been selling from store at 81 per 100 lbs. Bacon.— The Bacon market continues very quiet. The transactions have been limited, and Confined to small parcels. Ladr. —We have no sales to report. Salt. —There have been received since our last about 9,300 sacks, which moves off very slowly, and at rather low prices. The arrivals during the sum mer have kept up the supply, both in the city and the interior of the State, which is the cause of the present depressed state of the market. A few hun dred sacks of the above have been sold at 90c. and a fraction under for cash. Sugars —The transactions of the week have been confined to the sale of 70 hhds. Muscovado, of fair quality at 6c ; and 40 hhds prime Louisianas at 6}c. Holders are very firm, and prime Muscovados are held at 7c. The stock in importer’s hands is light; our jobbers, however, are well supplied for the pre * sent. Cofee —The transactions of the week have been confined to about 500 bags Rio in two lots at 8 and 8} cents. Molasses —The market continues at a stand ; and in the absence of actual transactions to govern us, our quotations must be considered nominal. Domestic Liquors —The receipts have been 300 bbls New Orleans Whiskey which had been sold to arrive at prices not made public. The article com mands 26 and 28c in small parcels from store. Rope —We continue to quote 10} to ll}c. as ex tremes—the bulk of the sales, however, have gone at prices ranging from 10} to lie. Bagging —We continue to quote extremes 14 to 16c—the bulk of the sales, however, have been from 14 to 15}c. Turpentine— Some 700 bbls have been received since our last, which have been sold at 82,40 and 82,87 per barrel. Stocks. —There has been a good deal of inquiry for Stocks during the week, but the supply was not equal to the demand; nevertheless a fair business has been done. The principal sales have been confined to Planters & Mechanics’ Bank Shares, of which up wards of 1.000 shares have been sold at prices rang ing from 26} to 27 ; and subsequently 40 shares sold as high as 828 per share ; the bulk of the sales, how ever. were at the former price; Charlestons, of the old issue, at 105} and 107 ; State at 892 ; Charleston Insurance and Trust Stock at 61 and 62 ; and South Carolina Insurance do. at 28} and 828}c. Exchanges. —Bills on England and France, nomi nal ; Checks on the North } per ct. prem. Freights. —We quote to Liverpool }d. and nomi nal. The vessel reported in our last as loading for Havre at fc. for cotton in square bags, has completed her engagement. VALUABLE LAND FOR SALE. THE UNDERSIGNED will s=ssi|H ff sell the body of Land on which he resides, situate two and a half miles from the Southwestern Railroad Depot, west of Flint river, Macon county, Georgia—containing between 1,600 and 1,800 acres. According to the best judges, a portion of this plan tation, the present season, (the crop not yet being gathered) without the aid of manure and amidst the most tremendous floods of rain ever known to fall, will produce from 70 to 60 bushels of corn per acre. The average yield of the place will be at least 40 bushels per acre—cotton equally good. A Grist Mill, with two runs of stone, a bountiful sup ply of the best spring water, together with a depo site of lime and marl sufficient to manure the place for an indefinite length of time, are some of its advan tages. As no one would be likely to purchase with out looking and judging for himself, a farther de scription is deemed useless. 522-w3t* J. C. HELVENSTON. GEORGIA, Newton county, September 19, 1849.
