These swift Steamers are each of 1,250 tons bur then, built in the strongest and most approved man ner, and are unequalled in all the needful qualities to give confidence as well as despatch to travellers. They have all the accommodations for passengersand freight requisite, to entitle them to public patronage. The Central Rail Road will despatch an extra train from Macon on Tuesday evening, to connect with these steamers on Wednesday, and from Savannah on their arrival if needful. Travellers leaving Atlanta on Monday morning will have a night’s rest both at Macon and Savannah —but if they leave there on Tuesday morning, they will reach Macon the same evening in time to take the extra night train on the Central Rail Road, which reaches Savannah Wednesday morning and connects with these Steamers. The Simplon Road. —This broad military road, constructed at a vast expense across the Alps, by the direction of Napoleon, to open a comtnuncation between France and Italy, al- | . though it is said by recent travellers to be f much out of repair, and indeed, impassable in , some places, will remain for ages a monument of the genius of that extraordinary man. The following is a description of this work, which is the admiration of every traveller : '• The highest part of the road is upward of a mile above the level of the sea. It is forty-five miles in extent, and passes on the extreme de clivity of ridges, over awful chasms and foam ing torrents, and through prodigious masses of rock. The road is so constructed that the slope nowhere exceeds two and a half inches in six feet, and carriages can descend without locking the wheels at any place. There are six galleries cut through the solid rock, the largest of which is 600 feet long, 27 wide, and 30 high, with openings through its sides to adtm| light. Thirty men were employed night and day, be ing relieved every eight hours by as many others, for eighteen months, in effecting this gallery. On the lower side of the road there is a wall laid with stone and mortar, with posts ten feet high, erected at intervals, to distinguish the road from the precipice, when the whole is covered with snow. The quantity ofmasonry on this wall and the abatements is immense. The road passes over 624 bridges. Fourteen stone houses are built at certain intervals a cross the mountains, the occupants of which are bound to keep their stoves heated night and day, in cold weather, and to a room ready for travellers. The Catholics have small oratories on the route, containing each a small crucifix, where they stop and perform their devotions; and near the top is a convent of monks. On the Italian side of the mountain is the village of Simplon, with twenty houses and cottages, where the poor remain in sum mer to feed their goats, which are found in every part of the Alps, 4 somo of them of grea •height. Pictures on Glass. —The Phila. North American has been favored by the Messrs. Lan genheira with a view of numerous pictures of the photograph kind—true sun pictures—exe cuted on glass. This is a new art, the inven tion of the Messrs. Langenheim, and beautiful. There are portraits, landscape views, copies of daguerreotypes, &c., exhibiting the powers of the new method, which admits of numerous useful and important applications. The steam ship Alabama, arrived at New Orleans, from Chagres, whence she sailed on the 28tb ult., brought twenty-two thousand dollars worth of gold dust. The Governor and Council of Massachusetts have selected Thursday, November 29th, as the day for the next annual thanksgiving in that Commonwealth. Frost. —We are informed by a passenger who arrived in the cars yesterday, that there was distinct appearances of frost in the neigh borhood of Columbia, and for ten miles below. —Charleston News, 9th inst.
