New Orleans, Oct. B—B. 25 P. M— The week opens with an active demand for Cotton. Already 1,500 bales are reported sold. Five Steam boats, lying at the Steam boat landing were destroyed by fire last night. It broke out on board the Steamer Falcon soon after eleven o’clock. A strong north wind communicated the flames to the Iliinois, then to the Marshall Ney, North American, and Aaron Hart. All exertions to save these boats were unavailing. The. Robert Morris and America shoved out as soon as the fire com menced, and were saved with trifling damage only. Two hulls only are iu sight now, the others are sunk at the wharf, which is consid erably damaged. Several piles of freight burnt, and a number of other bpats in great danger, but saved. The Falcon was anew boat, built in Lousville, where she was owned and insured for $20,000 ; she arrived yesterday morning, and had discharged nearly all her cargo of for warding goods for the West, among which were 200 hhds. Sugar. The loss of boat and cargo not short of $80 ; 0Q0. The Marshall Ney was built ht St. Louis, and it is believed was insured there. The Illinois arrived at noon yesterday wiih a very valuable cargo of West ern produce, a portion of which was discharged in the afternoon, but the remainder was most valuable, and was burnt with the boat. Several passengers, who were still aboard, barely escaped with their lives, but lost all their baggage. Two negroes are reported missing. The boat and cargo estimated at $50,000. The Captain and pilot owned three-eighths of the boat, and it is said are not insured. The other five-eighths said to be insured at St. Louis.— The Aaron Hart had a valuable cargo for the West, which, with the boat, was consumed.— She was owned in Cincinnati, and valued at $20,000. She was insured for $15,000. The N. America was an old boat, laid up with noth ing on board. The boat was ofliltle value. Our Insurance offices will sustain but little loss. The total loss is estimated at a quarter of a million of dollars. This accounts for the non arrival here yesterday, and as it is not known at what time she may have left, no anxiety need be entertained if she should not arrive to-day. U The age of Improvement. —One of the most important discoveries of the age, in ameliorating the condition of this large class of suffering humanity, Consumptives, isDr, Wistar’s Balsam of Wild Cher ry. What time establishes and consecrates, what experience adopts and confirms, what all men in all places unite in saying is good and valuable, is so, no doubt. A popularity of this sort fixes in society its roots so deep and strong, that time cannot destroy it. The success which has attended this medicine for several years past, has overcome the prejudices of all respectable and sensible men, and the article has ta ken a stand among the first class discoveries and bles sings of the age; and when resorted to in season, eradicates the diseases for which it is recommended. Dr. A. H. Macanair, of Tarboro, North Carolina, writes us under date of February 14, 1847, that he has used Dr. Wistar’s Balsam of Wild Cherry in his practice the last eighteen months, and considers it thfe best preparation of the kind he ever saw, and knows of none so deserving the public patronage.
