New York Aug, 26 P. fll.-The extensive flour house of Messrs. VV. C. & A. Hunter suspended payment to-day. They were heavy dealers, and have failed, it iasaid, for a large amount. The stock marketfor Government securities remains steady, but not active—prices un changed. Fancy stocks are more buoyant. Canton Company 474- Sterling exchange 104 prem The money market ia very easy. Flour is somewhat depressed and prices in favor of buyers. The sales amount to 8,000 bbls. at 4.18 to $4.44 for common and straight State brands; Southern 525 a $5 37; pure Genesee $5 ’7. Corn treal 294 a $3. Provisions remain unchanged. Groceries are firm, especially sugars and coffee, both of which are advancing. Molas ses steady. Rice 3£ per lb. The cotton market is firm—sales to-day a mount to 2.000 bales at 13J cts. for middling Orleans. The stock has diminished. Holders firm. Whisky is selling at 254 a 26 cts. per gallon. Weather very pleasant. City healthy. Washington, August 26.—The rumor which was current here this morning, that Mr. McKennon had resigned the Secretaryship of the Interior, is without the slightest foundation in truth. A runaway slave from Virginia, who has been in this city for some time, and passed for a free man, was to-day arrested by Capt. God dard, of the police, and restored to his master this evening. Raleigh, N. C., August 25. —A tremednous iiurricane passed this vicinity on Sunday last. Trees were levelled to the earth and much damage done otherwise. NOTICE.
