Every one will appreciate the descriptive trutli and poetic beauty of the following lines upon the j>olyg!ol songster of the American forest, which we take from the Southern Literary Messenger for June, 1933. The ecstatic pleasure and indefatigable zeal with which the Mocking-bird exerts its marvellous talent, ospe cially when aware of observation, is very happily de j scribed in these spirited and graceful verses • THE MOCKING-BIRD. Come, listen—oh, hark ! to that soft dying strain ; Os ray Mocking-Bird, upon the house-top again ; She comes every night to these old ruined walls : Where, soft as the moon light, her melody falls. Oh, what can the bulbul or nightingale chant, In the climes which they love and the groves which they haunt, j More thrilling and wild, than the songs I have heard, I In the stillness of night, from my sweet Mocking- Bird! 1 saw her to-day on her favorite tree, J Where she constantly comes in her glory and gles, j Perch’d on a limb which was standing out far j Above all the rest, like a tall taper spar : i The wind, it was wafting that limb to and fro, As she rode up and down, like a skiff in blow, : Mi hen it strikes with the billow, and mounts vyith its swell! I She knew 1 was watching—she knew it full well. | She folded her pinion, and swelled out her throat, And mimick’d each bird iu its own native note, — The 1 brush, and the Robin, the Red-Bird and all— ; And the Partridge would whistle and answer her call ; Then stopping her carol, she seemed to prepare, By the flirt of her wtngs, fora flight in the air, j When rising sheer upwards, she wheel’d down again, And took up her song where she left off the strain. Would you cage such a creature and draggle her plumes— | Condemn her to prison, the worst of all dooms Take from her the pleasure of flying so free ' And deny her her ride on the wind wafted tree ? i Would you force her to droop within merciless bdis ; I When earth is all sunshine, or heaven all stars'? ; Forbid it! oh, mercy ! and grant her the boon | Os a sail in the sun and a song to the moon. What a gift she possesses of throat and «f lungs! i The gill apostolic—the gift of all tongues! | Ah ! could she but utter the lessons of love, To wean us from earth and waft us above, W fiat siren could tempt us to wander again ? ! We’d seek but the siren, outpouring that strain— I W'ould listen to naught but iter soft dying fall ! As she sat all alone on some old ruined wall. Clerical Anecdote.—“ En penshong,” as Mr. Wagstaff would say, writes a new con tnbutor to the Knickerbocker, “ 1 saw in a late number of liie Knickerbocker some anecdotes of a preacher, which reminded me of a like character ‘way down East,’ in the Stale of Maine. On one occasion he was endeavoring to give his congregation a specific idea of the magnitude of Noah’s ark. He proceeded to tell them how many animals went in thereat, beginning with the smallest kind, and going up through the various gradations of size to 1 the elephant ; then raising his voice to the i highest pitch, he exclaimed : ‘Yes, my hear i ers, and the gre-a-eat vvha-a-les went in, bless the Lord ! and there was room for ail on ’em!’ On another occasion he took his text from Revelations, sixtli chapter and fifth verse : ‘And 1 beheld, and lo ! a black horse ; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances io his ! hand.’ Unhappily in reading the text, he mistook balances for bellowses. and went on to describe what kind of bellows they were. ‘These btllowses,’ said he. ‘vvast n’t the hel lowses that the housewife blows the fire with , neither was they like them which the black smith uses; but they was God Almighty's grea-a-at eta-a-arnal bellowses, that he blows sinners into hell with !’ This is strictly true, and if any one of your readers shall doubt its entire authenticity, refer him to me My name and address accompany this notelet.” Hanging and Educated Men.—The ques j lion having been several times asked, in eon nection kith the infliction of capital punish ment on Professor Webster, whether any olit ergr .duate of Harvard College has ever been executed, the Boston Transcript believes tliat but one other instance has occurred, and that was the case of the Rev. George Burroughs, ofthe class of IG7O, who suffered the penally of death during the witchcraft delusion in da lent. He was hung in Salem, on the 19th of August, (old style) 1692. By adding eleven days, in accordance with the new style, the dale of August 30th, 1672, precise Jy one hun dred and fifty eight years, to a day, previous lo the execution of Dr. Webster.
