THORWALDSEN’S CHRIST. Tlie following poem, for which we are indebted the Literary World, is an illustration of an acual incident in the life of Thorwaldsen, the great Danish sculptor. It is told of him, that when found one day hy a friend, in a state of despondency, he pointed to his statue of Christ, and exclaimed, “ that his genius was decaying, as it was the first work he bad felt , 3 |jg. w,t h. nor should he ever again have a great Silent stood the thoughtful sculptor, jJ| Gazing on the breathing stone, 1 W Prom the chaos ol tbo marble Into god like being grown • Hut a gloom wa< on bis forehead, In his eye a drooping glance * And at length his heavy sorrow From the lip found utterance. “ Holy Art! thy shapes of beauty, Hare I carved, but ne’er before Reach’d my thoughts a faultless imag", Still unbounded would it soar ; Still the pure unfbund Ideal Would ensoul a fairer shrine, In my victory I perish, And no loftier aim is mine.” Noble artist! thine the yearning, Thine, the great inspiring word, By the sleepless mind forever In its silent watches heard; For the earthly in its pleasure Only earthly ends to gain ; For the seeker of the perfect To be satisfied is pain. Visions of an untold glory, Milton saw in bis eclipse, Paradise to outward gazers Lost with no apocalypse ; Holier Christs and veiled Madonnas, Painted were on Raphael’s soul ; Melodies he could not utter O’er Beethoven’s soul would roll. Ever floats the dim Idea ! Far before the longing eyes ; Ever, as we travel onward, Boundless the horizon flies ; Not the brimming cups of wisdom Can the thirsty spirit slake, And the molten gold in pouring, Will the mould in pieces break. Voice within the inmost being Calling deep to answering deep, Midst the life of weary labor, Thou shall waken us from sleep ! All our joy is in our future, And our motion is our rest; Still the true reveals tbo truer, Still the good foretells the blest. Live Freight from the Red Sea —An English paper gives the following account of the live freight which was brought by the steamer ilipon, from Alexandria to Southamp ton, in addition to the East Indian embassy, recently arrived in England. “The Ripon brought home a collection of birds and beasts from Ethiopia, Abyssinia, and and other parts of the world. There were a fine young lion and leopard, a wild hog, a pair of pelicans, three eagles, a gazelle, three lynx es, two musk cats, a Sahara ibex, (a goat with magnificent horns ) a number of Kangaroo rata a little larger than English mice, of very light brown color, and remarkable for the length of their hind as compared with their forelegs, several Cashmere goats, a wild cat rather lar ger than a domestic one, marked like a leopard, with a beautiful head. There were also a number of venomous ser pents and gigantic lizards ; several of the Cob ra capellas were as big round as a man’s wrist. The beasts, birds, and reptiles were attended to by several grim and picturesque looking Arabs and Abyssinians, many of the former with large grisly beards. Among them were two African serpent charmers ; one of the latter was a lad, a strange little shrivelled face fellow, who caused much amusement by his comic manners, his grotesque dress, and daring handling of the beasts and reptiles. In each of his ears were two brass bed curtain rings, his trowsers did not reach below his knees, and he wore a pair of large Wellington boots. His legs and bools appeared like two mahogany posts in a pair of leathern buckets. He played with and teased the most savage of the beasts and reptiles, with the most daring intrepidity ; but the most extraordinary per formances of this youthful charmer, were with the venomous serpents at the request of the Admiralty agent ; and for tbo trifling black shtesh of a silver sixpence, for which he made a profound and slave-like salaam, he exhibited his power over the serpent tribe to the writer of this notice when he went on board the Ri pon, in Southampton docks. He took out toe cobra capellas from a box, fondled with them kissed their heads and mouths, irritated them apparently to madness by scratching them on the back, and even suf fered them to bite him, without experiencing any apparent injury. It was a singular sight to see one of these serpents irritated, standing firmly on one portion of his tail, while the body was forming graceful curves, and it was preparing to spring upon the boy, wtlh its mouth open and its fangs quivering. The greatest curiosity, however, brought by the Ripon, was the Hippopotamus. The one broght home in the Ripon is a male speci men, in good health, about ten months old, and 500 lbs weight. It fed on milk and rice, about 50 pints daily of the former, and the latter was consumed both boiled and raw. A number of cows and goats were kept on board the Ripon, to supply the milk.” WANTED. rkrk/\BUSHELS WHE AT, at the Coleman’s Graniie Mills, for which the highest cash price will be paid. Apply to B.
