This is at the rale of 74 miles au hour. The engine will be ready for trial in a very short time. Father Mathew.—The St. Louis Repub lican of the Ist instant says— The Reverend gentleman administered the pledge at the Cathedral on Sunday to 370 per sons, at an open meeting near St. Michael’s Church in the afternoon to 700 persons, and yesterday at the Archbishop’s, where he is in attendance daily, to 250 persons. The total number enrolled since hia arrival in St. Louia is 2,500, “The Man With the Wheelbarrow.”— Our readers will doubtless be glad to hear from “the man with the wheelbarrow.” The Alta California of August 6, chronicles his arri val : The Man with the Wheelbarrow, who has been often noticed by emigrants who have seen him on his way across the plains, arrived at Coiuma about a week ago. He states that he got the California fever, and as he had not the means to purchase a team, he loaded his wheel- mk barrow with 150 lbs. of provisions, besides his dP cooking utensils and baggage, and started from |F the States on his long journey. He was able to make greater headway than most of the j teams, as he lost no time except for his meals and sleep. When he arrived at Salt Lake, he found an opportunity of joining a company then about starting ; so he left his faithful hand carriage by the side of the road, and, “on he came a whistling.
