’fjomiw'aiid Stephen., and aa placing hlo. \o reside of hie brother democrats. Chappell a , judge Andrews. As an impromptu effort, •““highly creditable to the gentleman.— inn F. Lawson, Esq., who has wielded of late .■hi-i goose quill,” followed in opposition \tr Shewmake —he also belonged to the 'Zo\ that oulrkM's Rh.tt Hi. remarks Jr ‘ v some interrogatories from Dr. Powell, !0 what he meant by “submission,” and f* j, at was to be gained by disunion 7” Dr. West then withdrew his preamble and resolu . and Mr. Shevvmake withdrew his motion Th.v upon the table. Jno. Dowse, Esq., ' ovedto take np Dr. A.’a resolutions sena- The question then turned upon the Joptiou of Mr. Sturges’s resolution in lieu of Hr Antony’s preamble and resolutions, which waslost. This decision being unsatisfactory l 0 a | ar ge part of the meeting, the motion was ~u t twice more, and each time sank under a decided vote. Burke may be considered, therefore, as op posed to disunion ; for the meeting may be looked upon as a fair expression of sentiment , n the county. The motion to adopt the entire gtrmg not having a count, they were pressed upon, one by one, the principal amendment, being in the 6'ti, which, on motion of Col. A. /, Lawson, had‘•honor,’’ &c , stricken out. The motion to strike out the entire resolution was lost, as also a motion to substitute Mr. Sturges’s. The Judge Berrien resolution was then unanimously adopted, and may be con jidered an endorsement of his course and po lition. The affair wound up in considerable confusion and loud talking, in which many participated, each, no doubt, (irmly persuaded ib«i his voice and sentiments “would stay the rum of the Republic ” If I were asked for my opinion as to public sentiment, I would say we are divided into —the acquiescence—re- sistance in the Union, and the Disunion par ties. The union of the two former, (look out for that ticket) for the preservati n of the Union, will ensure the election of their candi dates; but.be assured there is a largo number here in favor of resistance in the Union, either by State legislation or some other plan. If my conjectures are right, as old Ritchie says, Nous Verrons. MARRIED - In Hoard county, near Corinth, on the evening of the 10th inst., by Joseph Miller, Esq., Mr, Benja min- T. COTTON.—At the close of our last weekly re port, the market was characterized by an active de- ! mand, at very full prices. This continued without ! change until the receipt of news by the steamer Europa, announcing a decline of Jd. in Liverpool, with a dull market. The effect of this intelligence was very apparent cn our market, arresting prompt ly the demand at previous prices. The quantity of fering, however, was small, and on Saturday hold ers were enabled to negotiate a few sales at former rates. To-day buyers have been unyielding in their demands for a concession, and the transactions, which have been limited, show a decline sf J a jc. from the quotations of last Tuesday—the greater decline on qualities below fair. The week closes therefore with a very quiet and somewhat unsettled market—so unsettled as to induce us to omit quotations, though we think Fair may be quoted at 13fc., yet a large quantity would not command that rate. REMARKS.—The general business of the week although fair has not been large, for the season. This is doubtless owing in some degree to the cx reports circulated, in many instances by designing men, as to the prevalence of Small Pox in the Oily, which we are induced to hope will entirely disappear with the two cases that were reported last week, as no new cases have developed themselves. Ihe supplies of goods in every department are abundant, and purchasers seem generally satisfied with the prices. In all the leading articles of GROCERIES, BAGGING, ROPE, BACON, and SALT, we have no change to note since our last report. EXCHANGE—Continues abundant on the North at par.
