It is said the City of Glas gow, has been purchased to run between Liver pool and Philadelphia, in connection with another steamer which will soon be put upon the hue. It is also stated that Cunard’s new steam propellers will run between New York and Glasgow direct. The war in the Duchies has been renewed with great vigor, the Hols’einers having guinea a slight advantage, but without coming to any important result. AUGUSTA MARKET. Wednesday, P. M. COTTON.—The market to-day has been de pressed, with limited sales, showing a decline of so. on all descriptions from the highest point of last week. LIVERPOOL and MANCHESTER, Sept. 27. Cotton. —The market opened on Saturday with a good demand, chiefly on speculation, and the prices of the previous day were fully maintained. The accounts brought by the American steamer, corrobo rative of previous advices as to injury done to the crop, caused a temporary excitement on Monday Morning, and sales were made in the current quali ties of American at fully gd. per lb, advance upon be quotations in the last circular; but since that dav the demand has been moderate, and prices of nearly all descriptions have assumed the position in which they stood last Friday. The large losses by sea of Surat have made holders indifferent as to selling ai previous rates. In Brazil and Egyptian there is no change. Taken by the trade 22330 bales ; on speculation 12160 American, 170 Pernam, 1000 Bahia, 330 Maranham, 390 Egyptian and 1560 Surat —total 15610 bales; and for export 1700 American, 200 Bahia, and 520 Surat—total 2420 bales. Total sales of the week 40160 bales. Observation. —Temporary excitement in the raw material, arising from any cause short of the main tenance of confidence, is not only prejudical to the Cotton Trade generally, but extremely baneful, as it affects the interest and existence of the Manufacturer in particular. Through such an ordeal, apart from the usual routine of fluctuation, has our market this week passed, perplexing and puzzling to both buyers and sellers, each timorous to proceed, and reluctant or unable to retrace their steps ; a vacuum has thus been created in the necessary demand, which is not only unusual, but altogether unwarrantable at this season of the year, taking into consideration the healthy state of business generally in this district. These remarks apply more particularly to Cloth, which is not only unsaleable at extreme low orices. but actually requires a bonus of from 7 to 10 per cent below prime cost, in order to force sales for present contingencies ; under these circumstances, dimin ished production, by restricting the hours of labor, is the only and effectual remedy to retrieve the tone of this market—which has not only become very gen eral, but considerably upon the increase. Yarn. — In the early part of the week a respecta ble demand was experienced both for the Continent of Europe and India, and an advance of sd. per lb. was fa<rly established in the-currem nnmbers shipped to those markets. Since Wednesday this advantage has been partly rescinded. Water Twist —Active at extreme prices. JVlule Yarn —Saleable at an advance. lb uhle Yarn —Rather quieter—prices firmer. Pine Yarn —ithout change —spinners under contract. Cloth —This article in an unstable market, being always the first to feel the effect of a decline, has rbowed considerable weakness, more particularly from the anxious competition of sellers, occasioned by the accumulation of stock made from high priced yarn, having compelled some, and induced others, to crowd around buyers, and effect sales at very low if not ruinous prices. Printers . —26 and 27-inch cloth in limited de mand. Mouseline de-laines Low prices have induced more demand, chiefly on speculation. Jaconetts and Madapolams —Heavy in stock— heavier on the market—lower m price. Shirtings.— 9-8 cloth in 56, 60 and 66-reeds, in various lengths, dull, at low rates. 5-4 40-inch Gold-end shirtings in 56, 60 and 66-reeds, rather more in demand since Tuesday, at meagre prices. Twills. —In some qualities the inquiry for these goods has been rather above the average. Tand L Cloths —In fair demand, but without im provement in value. Domestics. —Prices below prime cost —demand failing off—stocks large—production reduced. Pustains. —A better demand exists, at very low prices. EXPORTS.
