Indianapolis, July, 1850. A Whaumg FnAT.r-L»*t week we 4 publish ed in the ship news, a brief account of a largo bull aperm whale, which attacked the barque Parker Cook, on the 22d of July, in lat. 38£ N., lon. 36 50 W. Capt. Gamaliel Smith of the schooner Union, in the course of conver sation with Capt. Cook of the barque, learn ed, that when the whale was first seen, two boats were sent in pursuit of him. The near est boat met him head on, and when nearly abreast of his hump the'.boat ateerer darted two irona (harpoons) into him, but before the boat could be brought head on and stern oflf, he broached half out of water and capsized her. The line fouled aronnd the leg «f the boat frteeror, John Jarvis, who with great presence of mind, though dragging in the water, took a knife from hia pocket and cut the line. His foot was nearly levered from the leg. The other boat picked np the men. Clear of the boats the whale made a rush at the barque, bead on, and struck her with such force that he buried the cutwater and stem smack up to the planking in the fore part of his bead, and the shock prostrated the men on deck. He made another dash at the vessel, but but not with such force as the first. In the meantime Captain Cook had prepared his bomb-lance, and lowered it down in one of the boats to renew the fight. Thrice within eight yards Captain Cook fired the lance into the monster, and eventually get him spouting blood, though at every dart, open mouthed, be made a rush at tne boat, requiring the utmost skill to avoid him. In his flurry he was desperate, but after running his rounds he turned fin up,head towards the snn, and blew bis last. He stowed down 103 barrels of oil. When cut in, the barque steered for Fayal, to obtain medical advice for Mr. Jarvis, and to repair her stem and cutwater, which the whale bad started in his encounter. “The Doctor.”— A doctor in Ohio writes to his father as follows: —“Dear daddy, I con clewded Ide cum down and yet grinded Into a doctor.
