A Fixed Fact.— The man who once be comes a journalist, must always bid farewell |to mental rest and quietude. If he fulfils his duties truthfully, his attention must ever be awake to what is passing in the world, and his whole mind must be devoted lo the examina tion, and discussion and record of current events. He has little time for literary idleness; he has no days to spend on catalogues, or in dreamy discursive researches in public libra ries; he has no months to devote to the ex haustion of any one theme. What he has to deal with must be taken up at a moment’s no tice ; be examined, tested, and dismissed at dfl once, and thus his mind is ever kept occupied with the mental necessity of the world’s pas sing hour. Mobile abd Ohio Rail Road —By a letter just received, dated at Paulding, we learn that the people of east Mississippi are “ very en- I thusiastic upon the subject of the rail road, and ail seem perfectly willing to take stock to the extent of their means. No one appears to doubt the completion of the road.” We observe that the city of Cincinnati has appropriated $600,000 to the road. Probably it is designed to be expended upon the northern end of the work—that portion in which Cin cinnati is more immediately interested. Bui it is of little importance. The subscription will contribute as much toils final completion as if it were expended upon the southern end of the work. —Mobile Register. On Sunday afternoon as the steamer Clara, Capt. Brainard, was descending the River with a barge in tow, near Twenty one Mile Bluff, a fire was discovered in the cotton on board the barge which had made considerable headway. By a prompt movement on the part of Capt. Btsit ard ihe cotton in the barge was cS.it fly thrown overboard and the fire extinguished. The Clara proceeded to the City with her passengers, and after discharging her cargo, returned to the place of the accident and se cured such of the cotton as had not been dea troyed. She retnrned yesterday morning with the barge uninjured, and with a loss ot about 100 bales of cotton. —Mobile Register. Dr Ramsay, agent of the State of Tennes see, for the purchase of iron for the Georgia and East Tennessee Rail Road, is now in Savannah awaiting the arrival of the find car go.
