Talbot, we have received papers from Brownsville of the 16th, and from Galveston of the 18tb inst, Those from the former place contain no news. The western Texan says tho citizens of San Antonio are busy making improvements. Af > ter a while they will have as many cknrehes as r at Galveston or Houston. The district coert of i COUDt I has before it a very large num -1 crim ’ na l cases, but the greatest number - of the accused are transient persons. The po sition of San Antonio has made it a place of ~ 5 eS j rt j° r r ? cll,e »» men, whose conduct has tended to give the place a reputation by no means desirable. From a slight acquaintance with some of the residents of that city we cea ’ bear testimony in their behalf a« a Q , o ral and law-abiding people. The San Antonio Ledger says; On Saturday last a dead body was found a ' bovo the city, near the head of the river. He was recognized as a Prussian who had been in Col. Johnston's corps of surveyors. He had been on Friday evening to the camp of the Mexican Boundary Commission, seeking em ployment. When found it was supposed that he had been dead for twenty-four hours. A load of buckshot had been discharged into his shoulders, head and neck, which appeared to have occasioned his death immediately. Who was the perpetrator of this foul deed has not as yet been ascertained. The election for State officers, as we learn from the correspondence of the News, has re sulted as follows: Attorney General—E. Allen. Comptroller —J, B. Shaw. Slate Treasurer—Raymond. District Aitornies—McGonigai, First District; Green, Second District; Crosby, Third Dist. Peterson, Fourth District; Walker, Fifth Dis trict; Fields, Sixth District; Branch, Seventh District; Young. Eighth District; Buford, Ninth District; Glass, Tenth District; How ard, Twelfth District. Todd has been elected Judge in the Eighth District, and Arrington in the Eleventh District. There is a negro woman in Walker county one hundred and ten years of age. A letter from Mr. McKinney, member of the Legislature from Galveston, to his constit ueuts, published in the Civilian and News, an nounces his resignation in the event of their voting against (he acceptance of the Boundary Bill He has been strongly in favor of the measure, and considers that if Ins views differ from those of the majority in bis county, his place in the Legislature should be filled by some one more acceptable — Picayune , 83rd inst. Wilkks Railroad.- The Stockholders of this Company melon Saturday last for the purpose es electing a President and Board of Directors. Stock to the amount of $128,900 was repre sented, and the following gentlemen chosen by a unanimous vote viz : A. L. On motion, the following Committee was appointed by the Chair, to solicit subscriptions to the Right of Way, with power, condition ally, to contract with owners of the land for the right of way and Depot grounds, viz : A. S. Wingfield, 1. T.Jlrvin, jr., Samuel Barnett, L S. Brown, E. M. Burton, F. Ficklin, and Thomas Semmes. We learn that the contract for the entire line, has been let to a large Company, who are expected to commence work about the closeof the year.— Washington Gazette 26th inst. The Cottoic Crop of Marshall Coowtt. —For the last month we have taken some pains to gather information, respecting the Cotton crops of this county. The result of our inquires, has convinced us, that the crop will be a short one—Shorter than that of last year. Some farmers have told u« that it weuld take three acres to make a bale. The crop will be a short one and no mistake. Earlt Frost —Last Sunday morning we had a light frost, heavy enough however to kill the cotton in the valleys. By the tone of the Memphis papers we presume it was much harder there than it was here. —Holly Springs Jackson {Mist ) Oct. 10. i_ M i om, I W RYE, RYE.
