The following capital etory we axlraet frnm
a letter to the Alabama Journal, by J. J. Beep
er :
Old Col. D ,of the Mobile District, waa
one of the moat singular characters ever
known in Alabama. He was ie»ty and eccen
tric, but possesses tnasj fine qualities, which
were fully appreciated by the people of the
District. Many of his freaks are afresh in the
memory of the 'old ’.ns’ es Mobiie-and alt
of then will tell you that the Ceionei. though
hard to beat, waa once terribly taken in by a
couple of legal tyre*. It is \ieorge Wood
ward, 1 believe, who tells the story, but howev
er that may be, it is in keeping with others re
lated of the old gentleman.
It seems that Col. D had had a misun
derstanding with the two gentlemen alluded
to. and was riot on a peaking term* wiih them,
although all of the three were professionally
rid ng the circuit pretty much together. The
young ones being well awaro of the Coleoel'a
irrascible nature, determined a* they left one
of the courts for another, to have some sport
at his expense on the way. They accordingly
having got about half an hear’sstart in tearing ,
and presently the* arrived at h bread dark
stream that looked as ifit might be a dozen
feet deep but which in reality «r* hardly more
than as many inches Crossing they alighted,
pulling off their coats and boots, and sal
down quietly to watch for the old “Tartar.
Jogging along at length, up came theold fal
low. He looked first at the youngsters who
were gravely drawing on their boots and coats,
as if they bad jusi had a swim—and then he
looked at the broad creek before him like a flu
eat, translucent star. The Colonel was awfal
iy puzzle'’,
*• la tbijif d d creek swimming f' be
growled after a pause efsome moments.
No reply was made ; the young men simply
mounted their horses and rode off some
little distance, aad stopped to watch our
hero.
The Colonel slowly divested hitmetf of
boots, coat, pantaleeu* and drawers. These
he neatly tied up in bis handkerchief, and hung
them on the horn es his saddle- Then he re
mounted, and as he was a fat, abort man, with
a paunch of inordinary size, rather inadequate
logs, a face like a withered apple aad a brown
wig, there is ne donbl he made an interesting
picture as he bestrode L is stood with tha
"breeze holding gentle dalliance'’ with the
lower extremity of his only garment.
81 wly and cautiously did the old gentleman
and his horse take the creek. Half a length,
and tha water was not fetlock deep. Here the
horse stopped to drink A length and a halt
and the stream was no deeper Thirty feel
farther, and a decided shoaling !
Here Cel. D reined op. ’There must,’
raid he, ’be a h —l of a swift channel between,
this and the bank ; see how the water runs.
We will dash through 1”
A sharp lash made the hors* spring the ‘‘wa
tery waste ,”aod another carried the herso
and rider safely to the opposite bank. Tho
creek was nowhere mere than a (oot deep
A wild yell from the ‘young ’on*’ announced
tbeir appreciation of tke sport as they (shopped
away.
“I’ll catch yon, you rascals ! ’ was
ground under Col. D ’s teeth, and away
I he gallopped in hot pursuit, muttering ven
geance on his foes.
On—on they speed ! partner and pnrsued!
the youngsters laughed, yelled aad screamed —
the Colonel damned with mighty emphasis, and
hie shirt floated and crackled in the wiad like a
loose flying jib.
On—on—and the pursuer reached the farm
honre on the road side. Their passing star
tled a flock of geete, which as the Colonel
dashed up, met Kim with outstretched wings,
elongated necks and hisses dir* His horse
swerved suddenly, and the Colonel in a mo
ment was in a most uaremantlc heap with his
own brown wig by his side, and bit bundles es
clothes scattered around.
The white headed children of the house
came out first, took a distant view of (be mon
ster —as it seemed to them—and then returned
to report progress. After a little, tho father of
the family came, and the affair being explain
ed, assisted the Coione I in making his toilet,
the Colonel swearing and the countryman
laughing ail the while
Dressed and remounted our hero started off
with a wofe! phiz, and was soon out of sight.
Another Physician’s Testimony*
Mr. POWLE—Dear Sir: f could send yon & doa
n certificates, strong and decisive, of the really
anative effects of your valuable Balsam of Wild
Cherry, within the past (waive months, under my
own supervision and direction. Indeed, I know of
few persons who have used it, comparatively, but
commend it in the strongest terms. A case of Asth
ir a, ihe severest I ever saw, to which i was called a
month ago, evinced tbe superiority of tho Balsam.
This disease lasted six weeks, and the dysfsaea and
suffering was dreadful ; he «al up every night. The
gentleman told me tc give him somethin! to last him
home, (21 miles,) so that he wight *ee his wife and
child, nod die in peace 11 save him one boale of
the Balsam, and four ounces es syrup squids, direct
ing him to take tea-spoonful dcees of best Bordeaux
olive oil, when tbe difficulty es breathing was great
est. Next day 1 forced his despondent will, end
made him take six bottles of W istar’e Balsam of
Wild Cherry home with him as a present, he having
alleged that he bad used so much expensive medi
cines to no profit. List week Mr. A. caded and
expressed his gratitude to me in the warmest man
ner, said the medicine had saved his life, paid his
whole bill, and took six bottles more, and left my
office for home, rejoicing. Very reept-ctfully yours,
