BY an act of the late Congress, Bounty LANDS
have been granted to the Soldiers and Wid
ows of Soldiers who served in the last War with Great
Britain, in 1812, or in any of the Indian wars since
1790 ; also to Commissioned officer., of the Maxican
War.
Having formed an association with legal gentle

with the necessary forms and requirements of the Act,
to proceed in behoof of all those interested therein;

lie some of the old counties in Georgia, I hare
noticed thick groves of cedars, growing in the
old pine fields. In some places they seem to
have supplanted the pines entirely. A few
days ago I saw a large grove in this (Wilkes)
county, the trees of which were nearly large
enough for posts; in which the axe had done
much wanton destruction. For the purpose
ot arresting such vandalism, I wish to draw the
attention ot the owners of the groves, now very
common in Georgia, to a few facts : Post oaK

to filly cents each. One hundred cedars will
grow very conveniently on an acre of old field,
otherwise w rthiess. By the time the land
shall have recovered from exhaustion by culti
vation, each tree would make two posts worth
double any oak posts ever saw ed. These facts
can hardly be controverted ; the conclusion is
easily drawn. This matter is not merely spec
ulative, there is much experience about plant
ing trees for timber. In many parts of this
country, where laud is much more scarce than
in Georgi * fields of locusts and other trees,
planted for domestic purposes, have proven
valuable properties. In England, pine nurse
ries, called pinrtums, are cultivated for masts
and other purposes. One oi the most valuable
estates in Scotland is a forest of trees, planted
I think by the Duke ofBucoLEUGH, on a barren
tract of country. Indeed, 1 know of but few
things that pay better than a fruit, timber or or
namental tree planted in the right place. But
the cedars to which I have alluded, were plant
ed by the winds, and will be cared for by the
sunshine and rains, if the hands of th« destruc
tivescan be stayed. For that purpose —if you,
Mr. Editor, think it worth the space, I ask a
place for these suggestions in the Cultivator.
Will some one give me information concern
ing Artesian weils ? I should like to be informed
of the expense ofboriag ; and whether any thing
is indicated by the geology of the country as to
the chances of success. If the communication
be of general interest, 1 presume, the answer
might come through the columns of The Culti
vator. I would be glad to be put hi communi
cation with some skillful operator. Perhaps he
could obtain desirable business in Baker coun
ty, of this State, fifty miles East of Fort Gaines,
on the Chattahoochee river.

The above cut represents a new Dog Power, re
cently introduced into the Dairies of the North. It
is a simple endless platform, formed upon two India
Rubber straps, with strips oflight wood firmly rivit
ed to it. This endless platform is supported by a
drum about twelve inches in diameter at each end,
and the whole so arranged that it can be elevated to
any angle required by the weight of the dog, or work
to be done by it. The power can be applied to any
kind of churn —the rotary as well as the dash—and
can be worked by a sheep or goat as well, or better,
than by a dog.
It may be ordered from the Agricultural Ware

through Carmichael & Bean, of Augusta, Ga.
