We have just found, in onr reading, a capi tal story, which we copy for the benefit of young readers. The lesson it teaches will be at once apparent to a reflecting mind ; A traveler who was crossing the Alps, was overtaken by a snow storm a* the top of a high mountain. The cold became intense. The air was thick with sleet, and the piercing wind seemed to penetrate his bones. Still the traveler, for a time, struggled on. But at last his limbs were benumbed, a heavy drowsi ness began to creep over him, his feet almost refused to move, and he lay down on the snow to give way to that fatal sleep which is the last stage of extreme cold, and from which he would certainly never have waked again in ♦his world. Just at that moment he saw another poor traveler coming along the road< The unhappy man seemed to be, if possible, even in a worse condition than himself, for he, too, could scarcely move ; all his powers were frozen, and appeared to be just on the point to die. When lie saw this poor man, the traveler who was just going to lie down to'sleep, made a great effort. He roused himself up, and he crawled, for he was scarcely able to walk, to his dying fellow sufferer. He took his hands into his own, and tried to warm them. He chafed his temples; he rub bed his feet; he applied friction to his body. And all the time be spoke cheering words into his ear, and tried to comfort him. As he did thus, the dying man began to re vive, his powers were restored, and he felt able to go forward. But this was not all , for his kind benefactor, too, was recovered by tho efforts which he had made to save his friend. The exertion of rubbing made the blood cir culate again in his own body. He grew warm by trying to warm the other. His drowsiness went off; he no longer wished to sleep, his limbs returned again to their pro per force, and the two travelers went on their way together, happy, and congratulating one another on their escape. Soon the snow storm passed away; the mountain was crossed, and they reached their homes in safety. Now, then, young readers, yon will under stand, that to be happy and enjoy life, you have only to try and make others happy. Do this, and you will be happy as singing birds. Ex-Governor Ford, of Illinois, died at his resistance in Peoria, on the 14th instant. The majority in the State of New York “ Against the Repeal of the Free School Law.” is from 50,000 to 100,000. The rise of the Nile this year is reported to be below the average, and it is feared that the next year’s crops will suffer from it. The steamship “ Baltic,” the fourth of Collins’ Liverpool line returned to New York on Sunday morning from a trial trip, which was highly satisfactory to all on board. Genius, inspired by invention, rends the veil that separates existence from possibility, peeps into the dark, and catches a shape, a feature, or a color in the reflected ray. Talent though panting pursues genius through the plains of invention, but stops short at the brink that separates the real from the possible. None are so hard to please as those whoa satiety of pleasure makes weary of them selves; nor any so readily provoked as those who have been always courted with an emu lation of civility. MARSHALL’S COMPOUND OF CINCHONA, FOR THE CURE OP CHILLS AND FEVER, DUMB UOUB, &c., &c. THE ABOVE Medicine is offered to the pub lic as the very best remedy extant for those distressing diseases. It is sufficiently known in this community to recommend itself; but to those at a dis tance, or who are ignorant of its existence, and have occasion to nse such a Medicine, we would beg to call their special attention to this compound. No huinbuggery is practised in this article. Proof in abundance can be produced that as a speedy, cheap and certain cure, it has no equal. It is also an excellent tonic for persons in a weak and debilitated state of health. It is perfectly free from all danger ous or pernicious ingredients, and as harmless to the constitution as cold water. By calling at the store of the undersigned written certificates in any quan tity can be shown, and permission is given to refer to the following well known gentlemen : Messrs. W. P. Beers. J.
