—The Selma Reporter announces that con
tracts have been made on favorable terms for
the graduation, masonry, and bridging of this
Railroad to Montevallo. The contractor ia
Col. Waller D. Riddle, of Talladega, the able
«nd efficient contractor on the Mobile and Ohio
Railroad, a gentleman whose eminent qualifi*
cations ic his busiue.-s, and energetic cbarae
er, give ©very assurance that the work will be
speedily and well exited.
loe Reporter cougiatulates the friends of
his great enterprise U p o n the certainty of ita
completion and the energy with which it has
been earned into execution. Much credit is
due to the Presiaent and Directors of the Com
pany fur the unexampled progress of the road.
But one year has elapsed since the boohs war®
first opened for subscription—then ail was
doubt and hesitation—now, with the stock and
the appropriations of the Legislature, tho
means of the Company exceed $1,200.000.
All the surveys, making an aggregate of
1000 miles, and a 1 the estimates &c., neces
sary to determine the location of the road,
have been made and about 56 miiles of the
road arc under contract. We challenge a
comparison, says the Reporter, with any enter
prise in the country, and we are assured that
the next 4th of July we will have the pleasure
of celebrating the advent of the Iron Horse in
the Mulberry Valley
Arrangements are making to place under
contract Irom fifiy to sixty mites of the road in
Talladega, Benton and Cherokee counties ear
ly this winter.
Tehuantepec Route.—The company for
the survey of this route, organized under Maj.
J. G Barnard, of the United States Engineer
corps, is to rendezvous at Now Orleans on the
first of December, and will proceed thence,
without delay, to the Isthmus. The party will
number about forty persons. Major B. left
New York on Monday, in company with sev
eral of his assistants, for New Orleans, on
board the steamer Georgia.
Contemplated Steam Lines.—The port of
New York now fertns the terminus for ten
different lines of steamships, viz; Law’s, and
Howland <fe Aspin -vall’s, to Chagres ; Collins’
and Canard's, to Liverpool; one to Havre i
one to Southampton and Bremen; one t*
Charleston; one to Philadelphia; one to
Savannah, and one to Bermuda. An elev
enth, from Rotterdam to New York city, it is
said, will go into operation in May next.
Stock for a twelfth has been in part subscribed
for in New Orleans, and another company Is
about to be organized in Savannah, Ga. Still
another, making the thirteenth, is projected, as
the Journal of Commerce is informed, to run
a line of propellers between New York and
Liverpool.
Good All Round. — Mr. Buckingham, in his
Reminiscences, states that during the first ses
sion of Congress, the late Benjamin Russell,
who had dcmM much in the Centinel towards
the adoption of the federal Constitution b 7
Massachusetts, wrote to the Department of
State, offering to publish all the laws and
official documents gratuitously—the country
being then almost bankrupt. They were ac
cordingly transmitted to him and published
in the Columbian Centinel “by authority.” At
the end of several years he was called upon for
his bill. It was made out, and in compliance
with his prefffer, was receipted. On being in
formed of the fact, Gen. Washington said
—“ This must not be. When Mr. Russell
offered to publish the laws without pay, we
were poor. It was a generous offer. We
are now able to pay our debts. This is a debt
of honor, and must be discharged.” A few
days after, Russell received a check for seven
thousand dollars —the face of his bill.
f3rVery Superior Mustard. —Warranted.—
The subscriber has just received a large supply of
MUSTARD, of a superior qualify, for medical or
family use. Physicians and families would do well
to purchase this Mustard in preference to any other,
as it is much purer and stronger than any other, and
does not coat any more.
