for the future, but nothing is needed for the pre sent save watchfulness. To call a Convention fer tho purpose of watching would be the ex treme of absurdity. Why then is the Con vention urged ? gv many men it is urged honestly from a misapprehension of the tacts, and a confused idea that something ought to be and can be done. By many it is advocated for fear the ques tions clospd by the late settlement, might re main closed, and they not reap the benefit of agitaiing them. These men hope to gain by keeping the questions open. They believe they can climb higher upon half the ladder, than they could upon the whole—the Union not cut asunder. For this purpose they urge a variety of reasons for a Convention, and plans tor its adoption—reasons and plans suit ed to the latitude they are in, and the intelli gence of those whom they gull. Scarcely one of the proposed inodes of ac tion meets one of the objects professed lobe aimed at Some of them are too ridiculous for argument—some toe rash for success The Olliers are ail premature-r-precipitate—a head of the sentiment of the people, known in many unmistakable ways. Some however, may serve the purpose of keeping up the agi tation, till by some sly manmuver —some un expected succor of circumstances —an oppor tunity is offered for disunion, the only platform on which there is the remotest probability that this manifold party may unite. A^ti-Contention. Triad or Chaplin.—The trial of Chaplin the negro thief, has been removed from Rock ville to Howard District, Maryland, and will take place at the March term. ft is said that the court offered to release him on $19,000 bail. Most Important Arrest. —A most impor tant capture has been made, the particulars of which are as follows; On Thursday last, officer Tyler received by telegraph advices of two counterfeiters, named Ford and Whitney, who had come on out West. Yesterday Tyler succeeded in arrest ing Whitney at Colesville, about 25 miles fr mi this city. It appears that Ford and Whitney, who are recently from San Francisco, had passed off counterfeit bills of the bank of Page & Co., of San Francisco, in 50’s and 100’s, which were eagerly taken by the passengers in exchange for gold coin and dust. In this way the gents raised $7,000. The forgery was quickly discovered, when the return steamer reached San Francisco; and an express soon reached New York, officer Tyler having the good fortune to bring one of the delinquents to justice. In the possession of Whitney was found the gold and gold-dust to the amount of nearly 7.000 dollars. Officer Leonard of New York arrived here yesterday, and Tyler hand ed over his prize, who was quickly taken back by L. lo answer to the charge. —Buffalo Republican, Nov 11. JjfUee* of the Wild Clierry > --The Plain field (New Jersey) Union of September 18, 1848, says : The Wild Cherry Tree has been known for ages to be a most valuable and efficacious remedy for Coughs, Colds, Asthma and Consumption—and com bined as this Balsam is, with other valuable vegeta ble extracts, by a skilful physician, Dr. Wietar, it must of course be a highly efficacious remedy. Such, we have often been informed by those who have used it, it is, and we are not therefore surprised that it is in greater demand for the diseases named, than any medicine now sold in this vicinity. DOES ANY ONE DOUBT THE EFFICACY OP THIS MEDICINE. We do not ask the public to rely solely upon re commendations produced from States far distant, where the persons cannot be known; but having testimony from every State in the Union, we would respectfully invite all persons interested to call at 138 Waenington street, Boston, Mass., and examine for themselves the many thousand testimonials, from persons all over the whole country, who have been benefited or cured by this invaluable medicine. Saturday, P. M. COTTON,—The market to-day has been almost at a perfect stand. The limited transactions do not warrant quotations. Liverpool Market. Extracts of letters per Steamer Atlantic. LIVERPOOL, Oct. 30.—We have to advise a quiet but steady Cotton market, without the least change in prices since the date of our last circular. The sales for the four days amounting to 24,000 bales, of which speculators have taken 5,800, and export ters 2 200 bales. No new feature to notice in the C»rn market, Cora and Flour being in fair demand at our lact quotations. LIVERPOO' , Oct. 29 —Our Cotton market has been very flat to-day, under the influence, perhaps, in some degree of German politics, which are be coming more and more embarrassing, and have a sinister influence on general confidence, and thus increase the chances of our giving way a little. We are not apprehensive that anything serious will come of it, and hope the storm will blow over; but under all circumstances we would wish you to suspend operations on our orders—trusting that we shall be enabled to renew the faculty by the next or follow ing steamer. LIVERPOOL, Oct. 30, 12o’clock.—The Manches ter market yesterday wasflxt; here there is a dispo sition to press cotton, and sales have been made at J to I down in some instances, this is partly owing to the political news adverted to yesterday, and partly to holders offering more than the demand will take off; holders are very sensitive.” LIVERPOOL, Oct. 30. —To-day, our market is decidedly lower, and much disposition to sell percep tible.
