The Explosion of the Anglo Norman.— Remarkable Incident. —The New Orleans Pic ayune relates the follwing remarkable incident attending the terrible explosion on board the steamer Anglo Norman ; Capt. J. P. Barnett, before starting for the boat, remarked in a jesting manner, to some of his friends, that he had been on a pleasure excursion on the river in 1836, and had bis leg broken by some accident; (we do not remem ber of what description ;) he had never since been on any expedition of the kind, but believ ed he would go on the Anglo Norman and break his ether leg.” After the explosion we cameascross the captain lying down on a mat tress. He was smiling and appeared in glee about something. We inquired what it was, and he replied that “he had got just what he had asked for,” and sure enough that other leg was broken I” A late London letter says: —A sale of O’Connell’s furniture, under the sheriff’s au thority, has taken place at Derrynane Abbey, and its results afford an instructive lesson on the mutability ofhuman fame. In his lifetime, O’Connell’s house was open to all men; “open house” was emphatically the order ofthe day when he visited his “moun»ain home.” The furniture has now been sold for the bene- ** fit of those creditors who contributed to hit hospitality. The entire list of his household goods brought but £364! The furniture of his own chamber, including his “state bed 4 ” sold for about fourteen dollars. Works of the Armories. —We learn from a report from the Secretary of War, laid before Congress yesterday, that the expenditures on account of the National armories, at Spring field and Harper’s Ferry, daring the last fiscal year, amounted to $462,511 ; and that, be- | sides other articles, there were manufactured dmingthe year 27,955 percussion muskets; 2 676 percussion rifles, and 200 raucketoons ; . i and 66,972 flint-lock muskets were altered to V percussion muskets. At the reception ceremonies to the steamer City of Glasgow, at Philadelphia, Captain Matthews her commander, made a speech in which he staled that he had crossed the Allan- f tic in steamships ninety nine times, and had never yel met wiih the slightest accident. He commanded the Sirius, the first British steam er that attived at New York from Liverpool, and from that time to the present, he had y»st but one man at sea, and he fell overboard 7dpt ring the recent trip of the City of GlasgowCr The New York Code is now exJhiu attention in England The Society for Amendment of the Law at London has resoivecßi|| to institute inquiries as to its practical A series of ques f ions has been circulation among the lawyers and of this State, and will be transmitted through Hon. Sager, of the O'Reilly Telegraph this city, has recently made an covery, by wh.ch a heavy item of exßKse will be removed by the companies that umrfy adopt his system. Heretofore, some four or five large batteries have been used in the O’Reilly office in this city, for working the several lines. Mr. Stager’s discovery has en abled him to dispense with all but one, and that one, with the new arrangement, is capable of workiag five or six different lines, and yet the strength is not exhausted any more than it would be in a single line, under the oideystem. We consider this as a most important discov ery for telegraph companies, and one for which Mr. Stager should be liberally rewar ded by every company in the country, but more particularly by the one with which he is connected. — Cincinnati Commercial. \ Charge of Heavy Fraud.— ter noon, au individual had a hearing Mayor Gilpin, on the charge of passing James H.
