THE STEAMBOAT COMPANY OP GEORGIA, IN ADDITION to Tkrce Steam- I ers formerly composing their line, i have recently built the very light. ! draught Iron steamer, DAVID L. ADAMS, of pre’ri capacity and power, (making her trip® in 24 to 30 hours,) thus securing great dispatch and unequalled facilities for the transportation of Goods, at very low rates, to the interior of Georgia, South Carolina, Ten nessee, and Alabama, in connection with the Geor gia, Western and Atlantic, and Tennessee Railroads. All Goods will be forwarded without commissions* also, Produce from the Georgia Railroad; expense* on which will Le paid and collected at Savannah, from consignees, or from vessels by which shipped, when required. The D. L. Adams will run in connection with the Steamships Florida and Alabama, thus ensuring the tran-mission of Goods from New York to Augusta, in sto 7 days. Bills of Lading should accompany goods by Steamships. Particular attention should be observed in direct ing Bills of Lading; many now direct “Steamboat Agent,” “Steamboat Company,” <Sco., and as there are several Companies, this creates detention, and much confusion ; shippers by this Company should therefore direct Merchandize from the INTERIOR to JOHN B. GUIEU, Agent, Augusta, and from SEA WARD, with Bills Lading, to SAMUEL M. POND, President, Savannah. N. B.—A reduction on freight tariff has been made to lake effect from this date. DIRECTORS. LADIES AND FLOWERS. 1 have a fancy ladies are like flowers. And so I class and keep them in my minds The delicate and gentle are the jasmines; The mirthful and warm-hearted — these are pinks ; The loving are the rose, for lore is sweet And beautiful in mother as in bride ; The stately and precise are dahlias, set As they were carved and colored for a show • The tulips, such as talk of love and beaux; * [tn, The spiritual, pure, sweet thoughts’seem giv- As are the star beams, from the vault of heaven These are the lilies; and the violets, Are gentle hearted oaes who love the lilies, And would belike them could they chcose their Cat*. “ObSKRTATIOKI 05 THI GSATHODOS BIM AROUND THE HEAD OF MOBILE BaT.” This IS the title of article XVII, in Silliman’a Journal for March, written by Prof. C. 8 Hale, of thia city. It is an exceedingly interesting paper and we should be pleased to lay the whole of it before our readers, but being too long we must content ourselves with a mere notice of some of its more striking points. The immense shell banks on the rivers and bays about Mobile, forming, in soma places, island* of considerable extent, have attracted a good deal of attention and led to many theo ries as to their formation. These dapaaitaa are not peculiar to this region. Mr. Hale re* refers to others of a similar character, and per haps contemporaneous, in South America, as well as in Europe. Some persona account for them by supposing that the aborigines, having discovered in the living animal a wholesome and palatable food, formed the deposits in question, as oyster shell banks am now accumulated, by throwing into heaps the empty shells. We heard not long since every plausible argument in favor of this theory, g Human bones, iron ntensila. fragments of pottery, charged wood, &c., had been found in the centre of several large heaps; and, therefore, the natnral conclusion was that the Indians had collected the gnathodou for food at ’.he most convenient points and thus formed the deposits that now strike so many with won* der. The remains found in them are alleged as farther proof of this theory. The facts, however, presented by Mr Halo, derived from personal examinations, entirely demolish this notion. These deposits, Mr. Hale conclusively shows occur in three very distinct varieties of circumstances, answering t« as many successive periods in w'hieh they were formed: First, submerged beds, second* ly. those slightly submerged; thirdly, others that are entirely elevated above the water, at various distances from it and at diflerentelova tions. These phenomena may be seen in our immediate neighborhood. The most carelesa observers have noted them How camo they then to be thus situs ed 7 Mr. Hale answers the question by showing that those on dry land mark the period of the last retreat of the water towards the gulf; that those partially submerged have been formed on an in* dined or uneven bottom and become in part exposed by the process of upheaval; while in regard to those wholly covered with Water, ha thir-ka they lie as produced, and that other masses are new in the process of formation.- The submerged beds il uatrate the method by w hich the others have been aceumula'ed to so remarkable an extent. The living part of the species is frequently liable to perish in becom ing too deeply imbedded by an annual increase of aluvium, a very common event in this delta region; the continued propagation of the s.o-cies ;n such circumstances admits of the continued increase of the intsa to an indefinite ex'ent. Superficial marsh deposits are of no rare occnrrtnce in the vicinity, in which the shell-are thinly scattered through the thick mass oi black mud, clearly evincing that aueh was the way of their formation. In regard to ha aborigines, it is, however, evident that these shell deposits we f e of much interest to them. They seem to have selected them in a special manner as burying places for their dead la this way they became pla ces of resort, as is demonstrated by human remains, superstitious relics, spoils of hunting, &c. Out that the masses were formed by them is entirely improbable There are none of the species of which they are composed found wi hin a long distance of many of (ku largest of these deposits —Mobile Tribune.
