Joint Fatal Jones. [We are indebted to an esteemed friend for the following interesting communication in reference to the late John Paul Jones.] Buffalo, April 12th, 1851. The U. S. frigate St. Lawrence, Comman der Sands, as you are informed, is now on her mission to Europe, for the purpose of taking out articles of American industry to the World’s Fair; and subsequent to theiir delivery at Southampton *he is to proceed to France, there to receive on board the remains of the la‘e Capt. John Paul Jones, of the U. S navy, and bring them to this country for inter ment Perhaps at this time a few particulars of* the life and services of that gallant and distin guished officer may be acceptable. He was appointed by Congress wi h nine others, a cap'ain in the navy. Oct. 10th, 1776 ; —his first appointment as lieutenant being on the22d of Dec., 1775. By an act of Con gress establishing the relative rank of captains, he was appointed the 18th captain, and as signed to the command of the ‘ Providence,' of 12 guns. It is believed that his first service in the navy was in the capacity of a lieuten ant, in the expedition of Com. Hopkins against New Providence While m command of the Providence, he performed many essential service* in conveying troops from Rhode Island »o New York, during which time he fought several engagements without the loss of a vessel plrced under his charge. Subsequently he fell in wi*h,cff Bermuda, and engaged, the frigate ‘ S lebjy’ of 28 gun», n a close and vigorous action of several hours. Making hi* escape from a force so much his superior, he fell in with the ‘Milford’ of 32 guns. After engaging her for some lime, he made his escape, and finally returned to Rhode Island, after a cruis of six weeks, during which he burnt many fishing vessels, and cap tured 16 prizes. In Nov., 1776, Capt. Jones sailed on a cruise in the Alned, of 28 guns, in company with the Providence. Between his departure and his return to Boston, 10th of December, 1776, he destroyed the enemy's property ashore and afloat to a large amount. Cap tured the armed ship Melish, with a company of soldiers on board and 10 000 suits of uni forms, and brought into po t as a prize a large privateer of 16 guns. In June, 1776, in the Ranger, of 17 guns, he sailed with despatches for France—took two prizes and arrived at Brest, 2d of December. Sailing thence, he attacked with success the fort and shipping in Whitehaven, on the English coast. In this affair betook the fort by assualt and spiked the cannon, 36 in number. He then made his descent on the Earl of Selkirk's estate, with a view of capturing his lordship’s person Shortly afterward he fell in with and engaged the sloop of war Drake, and after a hot action, compelled her to strike her colors, her captain and first lieutenant mortally wounded. He returned to Brest after an absence of 28 days with 200 prisoners. in 1779, A ug, 14 Cap’. Jones in tho ‘ Bonne Homme Richard,’ oi 40 guns, sailed from France in company wi’h the ‘Alliance’ 36 Capt Landais, the * Pal'as’ 32 Capt. Cot tineaiijthe ‘ Vengeance ’ 12, and the * Cerf’ 18—a squadron fitted out in order to intercept the Baltic fleet. With this force he did con siderable damage. destroying in the port of Hull 16 vessels. On the 23rd of Sept., 1779, cruising in the latitude of Flammborougn Head, with the * Alliance’ and * Palla-’ in com pany, the Baltic fleet, convoyed by the ‘ Seiapis’ 44, Capt. Pearson, and the * Coun tess of Scarborough’ 22, hove in sight. The merchantmen! fled for refuge under Scarbo rough Castle. The * Serapis’ and the * Count ess’ stood out to sea and prepared for ac'i n. It was night before Capt Jones came up with them. The two British ships having formed a junction at 6 p m.. tacked and stood in shore —Capt. Jones changing his course six points in order,to cut them off. The “ Pallas’ suppos ing his crew had mutinied, hauled her wind and stood out to sea. The ‘ Alliance’, Capt. Lan dais, lay to at considerable distance to wind ward. Hence the ‘Bonne Homme Richard’ was left unaided by the other vessels of his squadron. At 7 P. M. the action commenced within pistol shot. The ‘ Bonne Homme Richard’ of 40 guns, on ’he one side against the ‘ Serapis’ ol 44, and the ‘ Countess of Scarborough’ 22, on the other —an odds of twenty-six guns against Capt Jones. From a history of this desperate fight we learn that Capt. Jones having burst several of his guns at the com mencement of the action, and having received several shots between wind and water, deter mined to grapple with ami board rite * Se rapis,’ and thereby to render her superiority of guns useless and prevent the ‘Scarborough’ from firing. With great difficulty he succeed ed ia laying his ship across the enemy's bows The roizen rigging of the ‘ Richard’ fouling the jib-boom of the Serapis,’hung for some time, but it giving way, both ships dropped alongs ; de of each o'her, head and stern. The fluke of the ‘ Serapis’ anchor hooked into the 4 Richards’s’ quarter, the muzzle of the guns touched each other. Wile thus situ ated. (the Scarborough could not fine for fear of injuring his consort,) the two ships engaged for some two hours with alternate success, and with the determination on both sides never to surrender. Towards the c'ose of the action all the guns of the 4 Richard’ were silenced and unservice able, with the exception of fjnronthe fore castle. The ‘ Seraois’ had been frequently on fire —frequent attempts to board had been repelled with great loss on both sides. At half past 9, the 4 Alliance’ came up and poured several broadsides into the ‘ Serapis,’ doing near'y as much injury to the 4 Richard’—when Capt Jones ordered her to desist. The main mast of the 4 Serapis’ w*s supported merely by the Richard s yard. Her fire subsiling by degrees, she could no longer bring a single gun to bear. She struck about half past 10 — her main mast at the same lime going by the board. Capt. Jones then took possession of her, removing all his crew on board, and the * Richard’sank almost immediately after. A more sanguinary engagement than this, probably has never been fought—one half of the crews of bo h side* being either killed or wounded. In this action Lieu'. Richard Dale, of the Richard,’ was particularly distinguish ed. Although severely wounded, he maintain ed bis station to ’he last. No commander was ever more faithfully and ably eec ended than was Capt. Jones by this gallant officer, to whom a large share of the credit of the action justly attache*. The King of England conferred upon Capt. Pear son the honor of knighthood, and Congress by resolution dec ! ared their “h gh sense of the disiinsuuffied bravery aid military conduct es John Paul Jones, Esq , captain in the navy of the United States, and particularly in bis vic tory over the British ship of war ‘Serapis,’ on the'coast of Esgland, which was attended with circumstances so brilliant as te excite general applause and admiration *' On Capi. Jones'* arrival in Pari*, the King of Franc* presented him with an elegant sword and at«o, with th* concurrence of Congresa, with the* cross of the order of ‘'military merit” Some time af ter the commencement of the action betwoew the‘Richard* and‘Serapis* the ‘Pallas/ Capt. Coitineau, engaged the ‘Countess of Seartlio* rough for two hours when she struck. In October, 1780, Capt Jones sailed forth* united States in the ‘Ariel.* On the royag* he engaged the ‘Triumph/ of 20 guns, and compelled her to strike her colors. On the 28th .1 une. 1781, he was unanimous ly elected by Congress to command the America/74, then on the stocks. Congress subsequently presented her to the King of France, in testimony of the sense entertain ed by Congress,, “of his generous exertions’* in behalf of the United States, and to replace the ‘.Magnifique/ of 74 guns, lost in Boston harbor. When Capt. Jones was in Paris, some short time after the action, he was informed that Capt. Pearson had been knighted. “Well/* said he, “he deserved it, and if I fall in wink him again I will make a lord of him.” The above is but a brief and imperfect no* count of the services rendered to his country by this brave officer.
