TELEGRAPHIC news Transmitted for the Clironlole A Sentinel. South Carolina Convention. Charleston, May 6th. Seventeen additional delegates appeared to day and took their seats. A letter was receiv ed from Langdon Cheeves excusing his non attendance, and deprecating teparate Stale action. Ihe Committee appointed to report busi ness for the consideration of the Convention, made a report which was made the special or der for to-morrow. They set forth, that the South cannot submit to wrongs withoat dis honor and ruin, and that it is necessary for the State of South Carolina to relieve herself therefrom, whether with or without the co operation of other States—that co-operation is worth many sacrifices, but not the sacrifice involved in submission—that the right of se cession is essential to the sovereignty efthe States, and the denial ofthat right would furnish the strongest cause for its exercise. That this Convention look with confidence and hope to the Convention of the State to exert the power ot the State in defence of its rights at the most practicable period, and to the Legis lates to adopt the most speedy and effectual measures towards the accomplishment of the same end. The Convention adjourned till morning. Savannah, May 6, 8£ P. M. Ihe steamer Alabama, from New York, is coming np the river. New York Market. Monday, May s.— Cotton. —The market has ad vanced | cent. Snow fell in Baltimore on the sth instant for six hour. From the Baltimore American—By Telegraph Dreadful Storm aid Gals at Buffalo. Buffalo, May 2, 1851.—A dreadful storm and gale virited this city yesterday afternoon, doing great damage. Early yesterday morning the wind com menced blowing furiously from the West, and in the course of two hours the water in the har bor was raised about three feel above its ordi nary level 1 he water in the canal at noon was about three inches over the towpstb, and still rising. The shipping in the harbor has sustained much damage in the loss of sails and rigging. The brig J Y. ScammoH was compelled to put back on account of the severity of the gale. On entering the harbor she dropped both anchors, which, however did not check her progress when she ran foul of the canal boat B.ue Bell. A passenger named Hiram Burbanks, eged 18 years, was coming from the cabin whe \ the brig struck the bow of the boat. Mr. B.’s leg* became entangled in the fore chains, breaking the left leg above the kn°e and horribly lacera ting tne right leg from the knee to the thigh lay ing open the flesh and exposing the bone Medical aid was at once obtained and it is thought be will recover. During the squall which the Scatmnon en countered, her topgallant sail was rent to rib bons, besides suffering other damage. The brig Montezuma, in entering the harbor ran into the steamer Empire, forcing her bow sprit into the after cabin of the steamer. We learn that the schconer Sylph was sunk in consequence of a collision with a large ves sel in the harbor. The schooner Mount Vernon was alto driv en ashore by the force of the gale. She sus tained no damage. Buffalo May 3rd —lt has been ascertained that some fifteen vessels have been driven ashore in the late gale, and a number are still missing. It is supposed that they have foundered and all on board perished. The capta<n and three of the crew of the schooner Lumberman were lost before she went ashore. Siipwbecx—Lives Lost.— Providence, R. /., May 3. Capt. Burgess, oftheschr- Harriet Newall, informs us that the schooner Minerva, of Harwich, was capsized in a rquall off Fire Island Light, at 9$ o’clock Thursday night, and all hands, numbering sixteen, were lost. Every exertion was made by Capt. Burgess te rescue tne unfortunate men, but the sea was ruining so high a boat could not encounter it, and it was found impossible to get on sail enough te reach the wreck after be *bad once pa-sed it under bare poles. The Minerva floated for about half an hour, during which time tbesibritks o» the drowning men were heard, the souuds growing fainter and fainter until that of the skipper’s alone was heard exclaiming “ she is going, she is going ” As soon as the squall passed, Capt. Burgess re turned to the shore and remained there until yester day morning, but could sec nothing of his unfortu nate companions or hia vessel. The Minerva was new, and sailed on her first fishing cruise on Wed nesday. Philadelphia, May 2.—Jenny Lind arrived at 2 o'clock today and will give her charity concert to-morrow night, at he Chinese Mu seum. Tickets are selling very rapidly. She leaves on Monday for New York. Much feeling exists here relative to removals in the Custom House and an effort is making to hold an indignation meeting to denounce Collector Lewis, and censure President Fill more for retaining him in office. COTTON.—The week closed to-day has been one of great depression in the cotton trade ; indeed prices attained as low, if nfR a lower point than any time during the season, on Friday. Yesterday, how ever, the market rallied a £ cent and the demand was active, and to-day there was still an upward tendency, showing an advance of at least half a cent upon the rates current on Friday and Saturday. The market closed firm, with Pair at 10 cents. Factors, however, offer very little, and tbe sales are conse q leotly limited, being confined principally to small lots. LIVERPOOL COTTON MARKET, April 17. —The late accounts from America gjow the receipts at the different pons to be still cn the increase, now amounting to 151,000 bales in excess of same pe riod of last year. These increasing receipts appear, however, to have no change on the general opinion as to the amount of the crop, estimates of which re main unchanged, being reckoned as before at 2,200,- OCO bales. Our Cot’on market, influenced in some measure by these accounts, and wiihout encourage ment from Manchester, has again this week declin ed in prices amounting to $d per lb on ail classes of American. Pair Uplands are quoted at 7d., Mobile 7sd., and Orleans 7sd. Surats and other descriptions have partaken of this declme. 1900 American, 560 Su rat, 30 Egyptian, 50 Maranhara, and 20 Peruam have been taken on speculation, and 990 American, 160 Surat, and 100 Pernam for export. 2500 Or leans, included in the sales, have been destroyed by fire. Havre, Thursday, April 17, 1851.—Tbe intelli gence brought by the Arctic steamer, arrived yes terday evening, and caused, to-day, the more so as the advices from Liverpool up to yesterday, are of a dull and declining character, a reluctance of buyers to operate, and a drooping market here. Some small lots only have been taken for home use. The Htvre arrived yesterday from New York, making our stocks 98 000 bales. The general opinion is that prices are too high for the present state of things, and therefore there is no speculative feeling manifested for Cottons or for any other article. The season is very fine, ami prices of Breadstuff's remained low. Financial matters command some caution as Cotton imports have given this year heavy losses. NEW YORK, May 3, 2 P.
