CHRONICLE & SENTINEL __________.. ■ 11 1 ■ '■■■' ■ ~ ~ JlUsalian^. Comfobt.—There are excellent women fn’.l of kind feelings, vivacity, intelligence —women often with: abundant pecuniary means ani costly articles of dress and fnAitnre—whore personal appearance is always untidy and the aspect of their homes comfortless. There is an air of negligence and disorder about an their affairs. The very sight of the parlcr gives one a homesick feeling. The children look uninviting and cheerless. There is kind ness of disposition, but no comfort. How many young men are driven away and expos ed to temptation and perils abroad simply for the want of an attractive home ! A cheerful room, where everything wears an air of tidiness and comfort, is a great promoter of the domes tic virtues. But there is another extreme re fatal to com fort as that of which we have spoken. The parlor may be altogether too nice The furni ture may be too painfully orderly in its arrange ment. The mistress of the house may be too precious in her attire. There may be no ease, no spontaneous movement, no boisterous overflow of spirits, lest some articles of dress or upholstery should be disarranged. The gush of childish affection must be restrained lest the maternal ebolor should be tumbled* Id dress and housekeeping, as in manners and literature, perfection lies in that wide re gion where ease and order, care and negli gence are united, and both extremes are made to yield to real comfort. It is a great art and requires a rare combination of Christian graces and inferior but essential qualities to make a co ifortabte home; and there is no sphere in lisa so attractive or so important «s that which is the peculiar and bles-ed province of a refined, devout, affectionate, accomplish ed woman amid her household duties.— Ck'r. Register . Fimui tact —When aworaan is possessed of a high degree of fact, she sees, as by a kind of second sight, when any little emergency is likely to occur, or when, to use a more fami liar expression, things do not seem likely to go right. She is thus aware of any sudden turn in conversation, and prepared for what it may lead to; but above ail, she can penetnte into the state of mind of those she is placed in con tact with, so as to detect the gathering gloom upon another’s brow, before the mental storm shall have reached any formidable height; to know when the tone of voice has altered ; when any unwelcome thougnt shall have pre sented itself, and when the pulse of feeling is bea'ing higher or lower at some apparently trifling circumstance which has just transpired. In these an d innumerable instances of a sim ilar nature, the woman of tact not only per ceives the variations which are constantly ta king place in the atmoaphere of social life, but she adapts herself to them with a facility which the law of love enables her to caqrry out, so as to spare her friends the pain and annoyance which so frequently arise out of mere misman agement of familiar and apparently unimpor tant affaits. And how often do these seeming trifles— these accidental betrayals of what; there would have been no duplicity in concealing—how often do these wound us more than direct an kindness. • * Cbivksb Prixtiho.—The method now adopted in China ia the following:—The work is transcribed in legible characters upon sheets of thin transparent paper; the paper is thee pasted on wood, and the engraver cuts away the t oirrounding wood, leaving the characters in relief. From the nature of the language the art of printing does not appear capable of being materially improved. As the Chinese language is composed of between seventy and eighty thousand characters, each character representing a single word, it would appear almost impracticable to use moveable type ; therefore the plan is adopted of catting in relief, on very hard wood, the characters of the work about to be printed. When about: to print a work, or notifica tion, the printer takes a slab of the characters, and with a hair brush besmears the slab with the ink previously described; the paper is i then pressed upon the slab, receiving the im pression. One coating of the printing ink is ' sufficient for two or three impressions; but as Chinese paper is exceedingly transparent, and being of too porous a character to receive impressions on both &ijes, it becomes requisite to told the paper, printing only on one side. I IN QUART bottles, FOR THE REMOVAL and permanent cure of all Diseased arising from an impure state of } the Blood, or habit of the System. Among the many aad important discoveries ot this ' generation, is one whose fame will be written, as with j a sun beam, in the history of the past. SANDS’ SAR SAPARLLLA stands forth alone, and by its own works proclaims its power—that mote eloquence so irresisti bly affecting in the appeals of the suffering for relief, has been answered. Thonsanos of cases cf diseases have been eared by this invaluable medicine, such as • are not fnmishod in the records of time. These things I are not done in secret places, or in some unknown t town, but are performed in our principal cities and peblic places. They are brought betore the world to ' substantiate, beyond doubt, the healing virtues of this preparation ; and the facts unfolded, although gigantic, - are as plain as the light of day. The Sarsaparilla is combined with the most effectu al aids, the most salutary productions, the most potent . simples of the vegetable kingdom ; and its unprece . denied success in the restoration to health of those who had long pined under the most distressing chronic ma * ladies, has given it an exalted character—furnishing, as it does, evidence of its own intrinsic value, and re commending it to the afflicted in terms the afflicted only can know. It has long been a most important de sideratum in the practice of medicine, to obtain a remedy similar to this—one that would act on the Liver, Stomach, and Bowels with all the precision r and potency of mineral preparations, yet without any i of their deleterious effects upon the vital poweis of t the system. Although possessed of powerful heal | ing properties, it is entirely harmless, and will not injure the most delicate constitution. When in per -1 feet health, no effect is produced by its use, except an increase of appetite ; but when disease is seated in the frame, and carrying fast its victim along the path of L life, then its mysterious influence is felt and s**en ;it enkindles new life and vigor, and brings health and strength to the suffeiing and diseased. SCROFULOUS AFFECTION OF THE EYES. Winoubstbb, Ky., Oct. 20,1849. 1 A. B dt D. Sands—Gentlemen : 1 would not have presumed to write to you, if it was not rny duty to let the public know the almost miraculous effect your i Sarsaparilla has had upon me. My limbs were cover ed with ulcerous sores, so that 1 could not walk during the whole Spiing and Bummer. In this situation 1 commenced the use of your Sarsaparilla, and aflei taking two bottles was entirely cured. I must also tell you of another wonderful cure. My brother was afflicted with this scrofula in his head, so had his phy sician told him the loss of his sight was inevitable, and permanent blindness seemed to be his fate. Three bottles entirely restored his sight, and we cannot but recommend all similarly afflicted to use Bands’ Sarsa parilla. Yours, truly, Bbmj. F. Bocxnbr, (.ITS POPULARITY ABROAD. VKOJt SOUTH AMBRIIOA. Ma racaibo, Venezuela, April 12th, 1849. Messrs. Sands—Gentlemen ; 1 consider it a duty due the public to mike known the great benefit I have re ceived from usi.ig your valuable Sarsaparilla. About three years since 1 was attacked with Rheumatism in my shoulders, aid also in my legs, and so severe was the pain, that 1 was unable to sleep. 1 tried all of the best medicines I could hear of without receiving any benefit, until th -ough the advice of a friend 1 procured some of youi Sarsaparilla, and after using four bottles in the course of til teen days, 1 found myself entirely well. I have nc hesitation in saying your Sarsaparil la is the best medicine 1 ever took, and can confidently recommend it to my friends and the public. Your obec ient servant. J. M Jbbc rdn. Here is another, nearer home: New York, Jan. 8,1850. Messrs. Sands —Gentlemen: 1 have gieat pleasure ■■ acknowledging to yea the great benefit I have recetv> ed from the uso of vour Sarsaparilla. A subject of pulmonary disease, 1 made a voyeige to Europe, but while there continued to be afflicted. A few weeks after my return, 1 was seized with a violent hemor rhage of the iun{;s, andfrom tbe debility and great pros tration ot strength that followed, with the protracted difficulty of respiration, lam entirely relieved by the use of your Sarsaparilla, which I consider a most im rortant and truly valuable discovery in the healing art. I feel that 1 have not for fourteen years enjoyed so good health aa at present. Very gratefully yours, S. E. Sbthorb. Prepared and sold, wholesale and retail, by A. B. & D. SANDS. WHEI the theory of tbe circulation of tbe bloo 1 was established, tbe secret springe of vitality were then partially exposed to our view. We saw and understood that the food we eat was convert ed into blood, whicu repaired tbe waste of tbe animal machine ; the food is tael, which keeps at a life heat the .ntei fires that warm and invigorate our inner man. - T Mood is an electric fluid which carries this heal tc / ramification of ike body, even to tbe ex tremities of the hair and horny nail. While the blood is thus the seat of life, it is also the seat ot disease. Food gives the body strength; Brandreth’s Pills give blood tbe necessary power to throw out from itself all impurities, thus tendering the stream of life pure and healthy. If men were more sincere, there would be fewer religious creeds; and if they kept closer to na ture’s laws in the management of their bodies, they would require little medicine. As men gior» more intelligent they will become wiser and hap^.et, even now, their wisdom is proved by the fact, that, when sickness assails them, they use Brandreth’s Vegetable Univeisal Pills, which soon restore them to health. They are peculiarly adapted to this climate, and re quire no extra caie when they are used, either in diet or clothing. They should be always in tbe house, so that upon the first indication of sickness they may be used. One dose in the beginning is more potent for good than a dozen after the sickness is fixed in the system. In colds, coughs, asthma, rheumatism, cos tivenese, fevers, and in all acute, heavy or deep-seated pains, their effects will be found beyond all praise. Three or five will act like a charm, often caring a dangerous malady at once, saving months of sickness and the evils thereto attending. Remember, Brand reth’s Pills are a known and fully tested medicine one that is used by hundreds of thousands in this coun try, and throughout the civilized world. They are quietly superceding all other medicines* They take out only that from the blood which is the cause of weakness and pain, leaving health and strength they produce healthy sleep at night, and an appetite that relishes all kinds of food. DR. L T. HENDERSON’S EUREKA TONIC AND NEPENTHEAN PILLS, a safe, certain and per manent antidote agairst all forms of the poisonous effects of Miasmata; effecting speedy and pennant cures of CHILLS AND FEVER, and alt the different varieties of Fevers ; torpid liver, enlargement of the spleen, dyspepsia, dropsy, Jaundice and all kinds of constitutional debility and derange' mer t ot the system, are speedily remedied by these in valuable medicines. These valuable antidotal reme, dies were discovered by Dr. I. T. Henderson, and have been successfully tested by some of tbe best physicians in the South and by thousands of other persons. These medicines are wholly Vegetable, and are harmless under any circumstances. The principal in* gradients are entirely new remedies, used by no other person in any form as a medicine. In malarial diseases, they act as an antidote against the poisonous effects of impure air, and require ho preceding preparation ot the system, as they comprise the Cathartic, Diaphoretic, Sedative, and Tonic prin pies; thus accomplishing a desideratum in the treat ment of these diseases, long sought for before tbe dis covery of these medicines. All who have used Quinine, (the best remedy here tofore known for intermittent fever) must say that it is neither certain nor lasting in its effects. Quinine, in many instances, from febrile excite ment and gastraigia, and cephalic disturbances, is in admissable. But the Eureka Medicine can be used under any circumstances or condition of the system where a tonic, purge, or diaphoretic is needed, with the happiest effects. The tonic mildly acts on the bowels, carrying off the mnco bilious matter collected there ; collecting the action of the liver and spleen, and assisting nature to throw off the impediments to a healthy action of the body, by natural remedies, call ing into action suspended natural laws; thereby re moving tbe causes and effects of diseases through the natural channels of the body. All that is asked tor these wonderful medicines is a fair trial, which will satisfy all cf their unparalleled virtues. Their fame is built upon their own efficacy, and a comparison with all other remedies is challeng ed, Physicians are requested to use the Eureka Tonic and Nepentbean Pills, as they would any other tonic, with any previous preparation of the system they please, and they will be convinced they are tbe superior of Quinine, and the whole catalogue of tonics used as intermittents. Their use is admissable at any time, even when the patient has the highest lever. For sick head-ache and obstructed menstruation, they have no equal. For particulars see tome directions. Also. Dr. I. T. llhndbrson’b EUREKA PURIFYING CATHARTIC PILLS, for cleansing and purifying the constitution, and es tablishing a finally economy in all persons laboring under imy form of constitutional derangement. ALSO, Dr. I. T. HENDERSON’S OUACHITA VERMIFUGE, the greatest blessing ever bestowed upon the infan tile world, warranted to expel worms of every kind, and in every case, where they exist in the body.
