Own.—One boar lost in the morning by laying
in bed will put back all the business of the day.
One hour gained by rising early is worth one
month of labor in a year.
One hole in the fence will cost ten timee as
much as it will do to fix it at once
Ona diseased sheep will spoils flock.
One unruly animal will learn all o'hers in
company bad tricks, and the Bible says ; “ One
sinner destroys much good.”
One drunkard will keep a family poor and
make (hem miserable.
One wife that is always telling how fine her
neighbor dresses, and how little she can get, will
look pleasanter if she talks about something
else.
One huabaod that is penurious or lasy, and de
prives hia family of neoeaaary comforts, such as
tbeir neighbors enjoy, is not as desirable a hus
band as ne ought to be.

Railroads mot Liable for Killing Cat
tle.—TVs Newark Advertiser reports a case
tried in that neighborhood before ajustica and
a jury of twelve men, in wbic i the plaintiff'.
Bridget Coyle, sought to recover damages
against ihe New Jersey railroad company for
maiming a cow on theirtrack in May last. The
jury rendered l verdict for the defendants, on
(he principles laid down down in Vandegnft
vs Rediker, 2 Zaoriskie's Reports, 185, viz;
“That an engineer in charge of a locomotive
engine is not liable for an accidental injury to a
cow which, euflTered to go at large, bad stray
ed on the railroad. The owner of cattle is
bound to keep them in hia own cloie at his
peril.”
Paine's Atmospheric Light.—The Man
chester (N. H } Messenger gives an account
of the exhibition of Paine’s new atmospheric
light at tho City Hall in tiiat pUco on Tuesday
evening of lart week Atmospheric air was
taken and pcs*ed through a series of six tin jars,
connected by pipes, so that the air h id to pass
through a fluid in each jar, to a receiver, from
which it was epnducied to Haifa dozen Argand
burners, and being ignited made a more bril*
liant light, *• the editor declares, than any
other gas light ha ever witnessed. A commit
tee, of whom Dr. Crosely was chairman, cho
sen by the citizens to examine the subject, re
ported that in their opinion, no imposition
had been practiced, but the air was made in
flammaole and highly luminous wheni burning,
by its passage through the tfn d. This change
they believed to be mechanical and not chem
ical.”
Webster as a Diplomatist. —The Liver
pool Journal thns compliments the great ex
pounder of the Constitution; “The growing
example of a great people is itisiruciinf rapid
ly the whole race of man; and the reply of the
Secretary at Washington to the Austrian min
ister teaches, while it reproach**, all Europe?
How superior to Lord Palmerston’s papers ”
the manly courtesy of Mr. Webster. While
the “old countries'’ abuse, yet dread abso
lutism, the uansaiiantie tepubiic treat* it with
polite ” contempt.” '•
Another Terrible Fire-Damp Explosion. —It
gives us pain to hear (bat at five o’clock yester
day morning, an explosion took place in one
of tba Black Heth Coal Mines, in Chesterfield
county, killing three persons—two white men
and one black. At 7 o’clock, ona of the over
seers was on the edge of the same pH, prepa
ring to descend, when another expioeion took
place, blowing out the shaft, and killing the on
fortunate man. Mr. Gifford, shortly before
the explosion, designed descending the shaft.
Had the explosion occurred one hour later, the
loss of life would have been awful, as about
150 laborers would have been in the pi - . At
our last advices, tho pit was still iu such a con
dition, that it was impossible to explore or
even enter it. —Richmond Enquirer.
