[From the Baltimore Clipper , loth iW | Fire in the CapitoL Another tire occured at a later period of the Corning, and in a quarter where it was least anticipated. At hall past seven o clock, one ol the Capitol police (Mr. Jones) discovered the Library ol Congress in a blaze. The ffames ex tended Irom a table near the ce’ntre of the room, to the north west shelving. By the time aid had been summoned, the smoke was so dense that nothing could be rescued, save four or live portraits of the Presidents, which adorned the walls. The splendid cases, prints, marble busts, cabinets, furniture, and upwards of twenty-five thousand books, together with other property, were entirely consumed. The eighs thousand volumes of the Library and other works were in an adjoining room, and removed to a place of safety. The ti%mes burst through the ceiling and roof, which were constructed of wood the latter coyend with copper. These w ere burnt out entirety. The spiral stairway leading to the dome of tne was consider* ably charred. Had thejkunea not been suppress f.i in that part ol the building, it la probable that its entire wood work, which ir Extensive, would Lave been consumed. However, “the destruc tion was mainly confined tothe Library. The wall on the west is cracked in consequence of the expansive power of the intense beat, and the black marks of the destroyer appear on the snow-white painted free-stone. There were very many persons at the fire, •among them the President ol the U. States and members of his Cabinet. Every one took a deep interest in the business of arresting the progress of the flames. Water was conveyed to the Library by means of buckets, lines having been formed to pass it up; Senator Gwin was among the most active in this vocation. A com pany of marines from the barracks were ordered to the scene and worked with good will. The firemen, as usual, notwithstanding the fatigue j which they suffered from labor at the preceding tire, at Baker's—were as active as if they had come fresh to the rescue. There was a suction in the Rotundo of the Capitol and apparatus on I the east portico; and if necessary the “machines" would have been carried to the dome itself. One ' of the Prairie Indians, in savage costume, was | delighted with the working of the engines, and expressed Iris gratification by laughing aud sha king hands with the workers. Many of the poor felllows who were deprived of employment by the exhaustion of the appropriation for the construction of the addition tothe Capitol, re Ti llered great assistance. The idea has hitherto obtained that the Capitol is fire proof. A part only is so guarded. The great ceiling of the Rotundo is wood, and all the connections he- ' tween the different parts of the edifice are of the same material. The loss of the library cannot be ascertained ( as }et, but it is the opinion of a gentleman em ployed in it, that two hundred thousand dollars I would suffice to repair the damage. Some of i the books belonged to the late Thomas Jefferson, and were purchased by Congress as the nuclus o! tlie Congress Library. Some years ago, a fire occurred in that place, but the flames had not made much progress before they were arrested. One alcove of books only was injured. Guards were distributed all over tire premises to protect the public property. The Mayor of the city, the United States Mar- 1 shalt Mr. Wailach.) the Architect of tire Capital, were prominent in duty, in tact, never before have we seen so much industry as on this occa sion. Everybody worked, as though it were a matter of direct personal interest. We think that rt is now time for us to learn wisdom, and to make use of iron instead ol wood, in the construction of buildings claimed to be fire-proof. It is not ascertained how the lire originated— some think from the flues, and others, from an incendiary. However, a committee ol Congress will examine into the matter, and probably dis cover the true cause. The Telegraphic Correspondent of the Cl pper under date of 24th inst. says : “The loss by the destruction of the Congres sional Library will exceed 5200,000 —Many of the works cannot be re-placed.—The firemen worked all day, and have succeeded in extin guishing the flames. A guard of marines have been detained to keep watch during the night. "The marble busts of Jefferson. Lafayette. Tay lor. 6ic.. the portraits of Washington and J. Q.
