We expect the Mail by an express train from Charleston. City Election. We have only time before going press to give the result of the election to-day for Mayor and Councilmen. The contest throughout was purely personal or involving local questions, having no connection with politics. blearing, 405 Phiuizy, 362 Kitchen, 318 The following members of Council have been elected: First Ward —A. P. Robertson, John Foster and ILK. Phil pot. Second Ward— Wm. H. Maharrey, John Bones and G. W. Evans. Third Ward— Jackson, Conley, May, Fourth Ward —Goodrich,Philip, John Robinson. Disastrous Fire in Savannah. A most disastrous fire occurred in Savannah, Sunday morning, which destroyed a large amount of property. We have been permitted to make the following extract from a private letter to a gentle man in this city, giving the details: Savannah, April 11. I arrived here this morning by the train, without accident. Just as we came in an alarm of fire was given, which has proved most disastrous in its re sults. A large Warehouse and Cotton Press of C. A. Lamar’s was totally destroyed, with 5 to 6,000 bales of Cotton. A large ship loading at the wharf contiguous was also destroyed, in which 1500 to 2,000 bales were burnt. This is said to be the largest destruction of Cotton ever kqown in this city. Lamar’s loss is said to bo not less than fifty to sixty thousand dollars. Iso insurance. ' Later from the Brazos —JTicSteatnboat Comanche fired into. —The steamship Yacht, ( 'apt. Thompson, arrived yesterday morning from the Brazos, bring ing $22,*916 in specie, freight. We learn from her officers that just before the Yacht left the Brazos information had reached Capt. Kennedy, of the steamer Grampus, then at Brazos, from a reliable source, that the steamer Carnanche, during her last trip up the Rio Grande from Brownsville to Roma, had been (fired into by a party of Mexicans on their side of the river, some time about the 25th or 26th ult. The circumstances, as near as could be ascer tained, arc as follows: The Camanchc, Capt. King, left Brownsville with her usual freight and about forty passengers, among whom were Gen. Carvajal, Judge Arrington, lion. Mr. Grinstead and several other State officers, to gether with several ladies and a number of mer chants. After leaving Brownsville those on board observed that a party of Mexicans, supposed to be soldiers, were following the boat along the banks;' therefore Capt. King avoided the Mexican side as much as possible, and only went on that side when it was absolutely necessary. Nothing occurred until the day in question, when a party of women came down to the river and hailed them, saying that some soldiers were waiting above to take the boat. At or near the place stated by them the steamer was fired into by a party concealed in the chapairal; and ont of five shots tired three took effect upon the cabin of the boat, not injuring any one, however, which was very singular, as all of the passengers were out on deck, and among them the ladies. It is supposed that the shots were in tended for Carvajal, it being known that lie was on board, going up. The above occurred near the rancho of lais Cuevas, some forty or fifty miles be low Rio Grahde City. Those on board have draw n up the necessary documents, which will come on by the next mail.— Picayune. p 9 illflijudif grtrgrtpfr. From the Charleston Courier —By Telegraph. Baltivore, April 9, P. K ate. ' -*> Sad Pastings.—All persons of feeling, who have traveled much on this ‘•mundane sphere,- * will keenly recognize the truth of the following, which occurs in a letter from the fair correspondent of the New Orleans Ptra'tune, i “Lrzzu; Lctwooi/’) who's giving an account of a journey ,p ,the Mis sissippi : “ There is something delightful in the social intcrcouse between passengers on the Western rivers. Thrown together as they are, they must necessarily depend upon each other for happiness, and the force of circumstances ripen an acquain tance begun in this way. and dispenses with the usual forms of city life. But there is one sad thought which embitters e cry moment of happi ness, and teaches us that in the most joyous sea- * sons of our lives we are the most to expect sorrow and care. Soon the gay party on board will bo broken. We shall reach our shopping place and bid farewell to those whose Society I as been to us an oasis in the desert of life. Each will take a dif ferent path, and wo may never meet until we do so in that better land beyond the grave. Such thoughts as these have often made me feel averse to forming pleasant acquaintances, for my nature is so keenly sensitive that 1 led I sutler more in separation than I have enjoyed pic astir, in compan ionship. Ah, who does not sigh for that world wh ere partings are unknown ? Who tha ; is pos sessed of that divine spark, the soul does not yearn for that holy land where the friendship begun be low shall be perfected, where all the pure and good and beautiful of our nature shall sdiiae out with additional lustre, making happiness for all ardfmdl We would have courage to live the sor rows of adverse fortune to buffet withidhe waves of Me, to stand alone and desolate, where it not for the blessed hone of another and more perfect state of existence ; If we died, ana , that was the last of us, why live at all ? Life would be a mock ery. A splendid humbug for some, a cruel torture for others.” TJ. S. Powdeu Magazines.—ln the U. 8. Senate on Tuesday a communication was received from the Secretary of War covering a report from the Colonel of Ordnance upon the necessity of estab lishing suitable depots for the preservation of the gunpowder belonging to the United States. The report states that the subject is one which engaged the attention of the Department twelve years since and that the measure then recommended to Con gress has lost none of its importance since, but that the public service requires the establishment of such depots more now than then, ;S the in crease of population in the vicinity of the stores of gunpowder at the arsenals has increased the risk to personal safety, and the hazard to which the, stores are exposed by such contiguity. Ninety thousand barrels of gunpowder, it is estimated, would be all that the military purposes of the country require to be kept in store. ! The necessity of provision for the safe keeping of the powder required f r the Pacific Coast, by the crea tion of a permanent fire-proof magazine at Beni cia, California, is also pressed. The quantity of powder at the public arsenals is thus stated ; Near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 80,858 At Baton Rouge, 169,439 Frankfort, near Philadelphia 145,048 At St. Louis, Missouri 843,442 Washington, District of Columbia 48,918 Watertown, near Boston 121,757 Watervilet, near Troy 249,405 MANTILLA, DRESS MAKING, AND GENE RAL DRV GOODS WAREROOMS.
