States that furnishes so many successful railroad contractors as Springfield. V\ e have now to notice a contract for building the Terre Haute and Alton, (Illinois) raiiroad, entered into by Messrs. Willis Phelps, Win. Mattoon and Jas. liarnes, of this city. This road extends 175 miles, entirely across the Southern part of Illinois. The gentlemen have contracted to build the road, furnish the iron, build the depots, cars, locomo tives, &c., putting the entire road in running or der, within three years, for the round sum of three million dollars. The route is comparatively an easy one, and it is believed that the road w ill be completed within two years. These gentlemen are already heavily engaged in Contracts in different parts of the U* States. We understand that Mr. Phelps will take the supervision of the new con tract, the other partners being individually engag ed upon others. — Springfield, (Mass.) Jiepullic. Lastly, he rose almost upright on his latter end, and made such a triumphant flapping with Ids wings that we really expected he was going to shout ‘Presistuetz forever.’ But no such thing. Ho only cried, ‘Q,uack, quack, quack, Escape of an Aixedged Slave.—About two years since a colored man named Dudley alias Bowden, alledgcd to be a slave of Dr. Thomas, of Baltimore, was arrested in this city on a charge of robbery, and by the advice of his counsel, pleaded guilty to the charge, in order to avoid being given up to his owner, and was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment in the State Prison. Ills term of imprisonment expired ®a the 12th inst. On the 11th, the day before his imprisonment expired, the claimant’s son obtained a warrant from the United States authorities in this city to take his alleged slave into custody when he should be liberated from prison. The warrant was accordingly grant ed, and Mr. Thomas and two United States officers proceeded to Sing Sing, where they arrived on th® afternoon of the 11th iust. On applying at the prison, they were informed that Gov. Hunt had that morning pardoned the alleged slave, who im mediately left the prison and went away. It was no doubt very lucky for the slave,* although no little disappointment to his owner. \V® can hardly believe that the Gov. was aware that th® convict was a slave; if he was, and freed him in order to prevent his recapture by his master, he violated the spirit of the Constitution and Law, and ought to be held answerable for the value of hia slave.
