A Letter Fuel’ll Kossuth.— The following letter
was written by M. Kossuth, in reply to inquiries
from a gentleman in Newcastle, England. It is
published in the Chronicle of that place :
“Dear Sir;— ln your letter of the 13th instant
you ask me, at the request ot your men, about the
prospects of agricultural laborers and coal miners
in America. 1 feel honored by this confidence
and gladly give you my impressions. The United
States, especially the Western portion of the coun
try—Wisconsin and lowa—offer most favorable
chances for emigration, especially to every indus
trial agriculturist who has some capital, sav £IOO
or £-200.
“There is not the slightest doubt that in a very
short time he must succeed, as the value ot the
laud increases materially by the natural progress
of the settlements toward the West, while the
farmer has, besides, all the benefits of his industry
by Ids annual crops. Congress land at (equal
to live English shillings') the acre, fetches, when
cleared and brought under cultivation, in very
b w years, ten to fifteen and more dollars the acre.
There are, besides, such facilities lor the education
of the child n n, to whom the social equality opens
the most honorable career, that 1 strongly advise
emigration to every agriculturist who has some capi
tal.
‘’The daily laborer encounters more diffi; ulties,
” ages amount commonly in the West (besides
board and lodging, which is given to the laborer) to
eight dollar* (thirty-four seillings) a mouth; for
au agriculturist in harvest time, one dollar a day,
but hired labor i> not so much required as in Eng
land, the farmers in the West being ail small pro
prietors, who work their fields themselves.
“As to the wages of the coal miners, I nave no
experience, but i know that extensive coal fields
arc worked all over the Union, especially in the
State of Pennsylvania, and skilled laborers always
find employment. With sincere thanks for your
sympathy, yours, faithfully,

Crime in New Voce.—There were no Jess than
three homicides or murders in New York between
Monday night and Wednesday at noon. < n Mon

of stairs, causing her death ; on Tuesday night a
party who were annoying a newly wedded pair by

A beautful meteor has.been lately observed in
various parts of England. A correspondent of the
London Times, writingl'rom Maidenhead, says that,
“a star seemed to enlarge-ai d expand rapidly till
it reached about the magnitude of the moon as it
appears to our sight; it then shot downwards in a
lull stream of yellow light, which was first changed
into red, and finally into a vivid green, when it
disappeared, leaving no traces of itself behind.” <g)

Cardift, and at Manchester.
The Potato Disease.—This mysterious disease
is making alarming havoc on many farms in this

entirely perish in a short time. —Boston Advocate.
