Astronomical Discover!*.
Xctwithatandiug the marvellous discoveries
w.nch hut e been made in the planetary system,
the science of astronomy is comparatively in its m
liincj, and the probability is, that as we increase in
perfection in the construction of telescopes, new
wonders will continue to be disclosed. The
telescope of Lord Ross has brought new worlds to
view and corrected errors in regard to those which
were known ; but the Rev. Mr. Craig, of England,
bus just com traded a telescope, which exceeds
t/mt of Lord Roys, in magnifying power and accu
racy; and scientific men arc waiting with impa
tience, the final completion of the wonderful in
strument, to test its power. A slight delect has to
be rectified before it will be in complete working
order, although it has been already tried with as
tonishing effect. t rom u notice of this instrument
in the London Morning Chronicle, we extract the
following paragraph:
“Some idea ol its powers may be formed from
l ' at 11 magnifies the light of the moon
40,000 times, and in coarse objects, like tho outlines
of the lunar mountains ami the craters, the whole
ol tuese rays may be allowed to pass at once to the
local point, as they do not m such objects confuse
it in any appreciable degree. Jn the Craig tele
scone the moon is a most magnificent obiect, and
perfectly colorless, enabling the beholder to trace
trie outlines of the various mountain ranges with
such vivid distinctness as to make us long for
Lae clear weather in order to bring the whole pow
cis of this marvelous instrument to bear upon out
satelite. _ It is positively asserted that on a favora
b.c evening, it there was a building or object of
the size ot W edminister Abbey in the moon, the
whole of its parts and proportions would be dis
tinctly revealed. As au illustration of its space
penetrating powers, and the manner in which it
gr..sps in the light, it was stated that soon after it
was created, it was directed to a test object, a mi
nnte spcc.c of light in one ot the constellations,
wmch is not to bo seen at all times bv tho most ex
cellent instruments, though guided bv first rate ob
servers, and in profound darkness. The Craig tele
scope at once discovered that this test obiect was
not a minute speck of light, bur. a brilliant double
star. As soon as it is finally adjusted, Mr. Craig
proposes to direct the instrument to the planet Ve
nus, to examine it minutely, in the hope that he
may be able to settle the question of whether she
has a satelite or not.”
