The Paris correspondent of the New York Jour nal of Commerce writes as follows, touching the state of religion in France: Monsieur Vivien, the highest authority under the late monarch}’, on the administrative and ec clesiastical institutions in France, has inserted in recent numbers of the Revu des deux Monties, elaborate and authentic papers on the several de nominations of Christians and their forms of wor ship. He commenced, of course, with the Catho lic Church as that of immense majority. I shall defer a report of some of his details, ami mention now only part of his statistics of Protestant de nominations. He enumerates Calvinists; the pro fessors of the Confession of Augsburg—Lutherans; and others to be noticed. The Calvinists have 511 ministers in 52 departments of the 86 into which the country is divided; their temples are about 6i‘o; the Lutherans are mainly in Alsac; Stras bourg is their capital—where thev number 30,000 ; in Paris they number 15,000. "The total of the Protestants, or members of the Reformed Churches, is estimated at a million and a half; they have,six Bible Societies, some Evangelical Missions, and two institutions of Diaconesses or Sisters of Charity. In the treasury budget of 1853, the appropriation for Christian worship other than Catholic, is 1,307,- 800 francs. There are various dissenting communions in the interior, without authorized temple or synod ; some churches, Presbyterian or Congregationalists, are found in sixteen of the departments. The sect of Darbists is noticed here and there. In the depart ment of the Gard, acommunity of Quakers flourish undisturbed, and arc often visited by the British Friends. They are not so strict as the latter or the American, but are distinguished by simplicity in all the forms and acts of social and domestic life, by industry and peaceful demeanor. There are five thousand Anabaptists scattered through ten departments. The Memnonites—near the Qua kers in worship and doctrine, hold meetings in several departments; and since IS4O frequent a special place of worship in Paris. They emigrate, from time to time to the United States. The French Methodists manifest untiring zeal; they have founded a chapel in Paris ; they claim 3000 communicants and some ten thousand auditors. Protestants have -two faculties of Theology and somo clerical seminaries. The English make no proselytes. M. Viven reckons the Israelite population in France at 87,000; eight or ten thousand in the me tropolis. They can beast of large foundations of charity hospitals, and schools for both sexes, to which the Rothschilds have munificently contribu ted; societies have been formed for the protection and placing of all their youth. The society of Tal mudists, of Free School of Theological studies, thrives. All professions and all public functions are open to the Jews. They have officially and formally protested against the invidious charge of being “a nation within a nation;” they claim to be French, identified civilly and politically with the other natives—the same in heart and allegiance. North Carolina Twins.—Dr. Gooch, editor of the Tethoscope, a medical journal, published at Richmond, Va., gives the following, in his account of the North Carolina twins : “ These two children were bom in July, 1851. The mother is a stout negress, aged 31, very fat, and of large frame. They are remarkably spright ly and healthy children, of natural size, one some what larger than the other, and are perfectly formed, but they are 'united at the sacra —the lower termination of the back. The bond of union - seems to be chiefly cartilaginous, but the sacra are *i|l| so closely approximated, that some suppose there is osseous union of those bones. The anatomical J conformation has some strange pacuiiarities, inter- “ esting to personal men, which we omit. Their usual position is on their sides, (the right side of J the smaller and the left of the other,) with their necks bent so as to put the face upwards. Having <9 now grown fora } ear in the recumbent posture, I thus bent, their faces and heads have become somewhat; distorted latterly. The mother nurse* them by lying first on one side then on the ot her. Nhe handles them awkwardly, and seems to 1 ave little idea of managing them. From their sprightly and intelligent countenances, there is reason to hope that they will soon acquire uu education in the arts of sitting and locomotion. They must sit back to back on one common seat, and take it by turns which is to w'alk forwards, while the other mu>t lack step backwards ala nsUiiaire. They are far more wonderful than famous Siamese Twins, and are owned by Mr. Purvis,” Mr. Robert Walsh, in bis last letter from Paris to the Journal of Commerce, takes occasion, in allu ding to the death of lb nry Clay, to relate an anec dote told him by Sir Charles Basrot, while British Minister at Washington. After the peace, conclu ded at Ghent, the American Commissioners went over to Loudon. Lord Castlereagh gave them a dinner; Sir Charles Bagotwaaof the company, and was then on the eve of departure for the United States; the conversation became animated, and was protracted an hour or more beyond the customary time, of leaving the table. Mr. Clay indulged his powers of dialogue and discussion with his char acteristic ease and piquancy; his colleagues took their due share in the conversation ; after the dis persion of the guests, Mr. Bagot remained behind for some confidential discourse with the host. A.s soon as they were alone his loreship rubbed his hands together and exclaimed; “ 1 like the Ken tucky man the best—l like the Kentucky man the best. Thanksgiving Dat Incident. —At Andover, Mas sachusetts, on thanksgiving day, Mr. Smith, of the old South Church of that place, preached an excel lent sermon from the words, “ He setteth the soli tary in families,”—on the characteristics of a well ordered and pious household, —and in the course o his remarks feelingly depicted the attractions of home. There were many sons and daughters of families of the parish, resident in other places, present, and at the conclusion of his discourse the church choir, without preconcert, rose and sung, with peculiar taste, “ Home, sweet Home,” to pleased ears and moistened eyes. —Boston Post. The Colembl’s and Opeleika Road.—We had the pleasure of conversing yesterday with Mr. Pol lard, the President, and Mr. Jones, Engineer of the Columbus and Opeleika Road. gentle men are in Savannah on business connected with the Road. We are gratified to hear from them that every thing is going on as well as could be ex pected. 'The entire grading and bridging of the Road is under contract in moderate sized sections, there being eight contractors along the whole Hue of 28% miles from depot to depot/ It is believed that the road will be done and in running order in one year from the Ist April next at furthest. This Road will cross the Chattahoochee a little above the city of Columbus, pass through the north common, anil have its depot on the east common, near that of the Muscogee Road. —Savannah Rep.
