ARRIVAL OF THE STEAMER
NIAGARA. __
The Steamship Niagara arrived at Halifax on
Friday morning, at 5 o’clock, with later intelligence
from Liverpool.
Liverpool Market.
Cotton. —The demand was moderate, and prices
had declined }£d. Holders were pressing on the
market. Sales of the week 23,000 bales, of which
Speculators took 2,000, and Exporters 1,000 bales.
The quotations are for Fair Orleans 6>g, Middling
5%d.; Fair Upland 5%, Middling 5
SECOND DESPATCH.
The Liverpool market closed unsettled at
for Fair Uplands. The stock in Liverpool 17,000
bales over last year.
Havre Market.
Cotton.—Market dull with a declining tendency.
Sales of the week ending on the afternoon of the
28d nit., 5,000 bales. Stock on hand, exclusive of
shipboard, 14,835 bales. New Orleans Tres Ordi
naire 96 francs. American Securities had slight
ly advanced.
Trade in Manchester had slightly declined. Con
■ols closed for account 1 a H premium.
The English Parliament confirms the Trade
doct riaes.
The French Empire is «till|progresaing.
Steamer Burnt.
The steamer City of Pittsburg, was burnt at Val
paraiso. The vessel and cargo insured for 8(0,000
dollars.

Satciidat, Dec. 11.— Cotton. —Sales to-day 1,(00
bales at 8% a 9% cents.
New Vork Market.
Friday, Dec. 10. — Cotton. —The market is easier
to-day, with sales of 1,000 bales.

Boston, December 7th.—The barque Avo’a,
from Charleston for Boston, struck on the Sow
and Pigs this morning, and came off leaking badly.
She was abandoned and fell on her beam ends.
A pilot boat making for Boston took her in tow,
after a portion of her cargo was thrown overboard.
Her crew were lauded in safety.
Buffalo, December 7th.—A collision occurred
on the Erie Railroad last Saturday evening near
Oswego, between the passenger train bound west
and the cars distributing iron for the track. Mary
of the passengers were much bruised, and some of
them seriously injured. Great indignation was
expressed by the passengers, who were not allow
ed to communicate the accident to their families
over the Company’s Telegraph Line.
Lousville, Dec. 6.—A dreadful tradegy has oc
curred on board the steamboat James Willingear,
from St. Louis, while on her way down to this
city. Among the deck passengers was a family
composed of Daniel Street, his wife and four chil
dren. When near Evansville, the wife suddenly
seized her youngest child, an infant, and jumped
into the river with it. The husband immediately
leaped after her, and all three sunk to rise no more.
The three remaining children were taken charge
of by the passengers, and were landed at New Al
bany, in the care of their grandfather. Nearly
sixty dollars were contributed by the passengers
for the support of the children.
Washington, Dec. B.—The steamer Fulton brings
despatches from Consul Sharkey in regard to the
imprisonment of Capt. Gray and the officers and
crew of the Lady Suffolk. Their contents have
not yet been ascertained. A Cabinet meeting was
held to-day and it is supposed the subject was un
der consideration. We learn from the officers of
the Fulton that Judge Sharkey and Capt. Hollis,
of the Cyane, held an interview with the Captain
General in regard to the affair, shortly before the
Fulton left, and it was possible that the accused
would be released, there being no sufficient evi
dence that the Lady Suffolk would be engaged in
the Slave Trade, and besides it was generally un
derstood that the Captain General was aiding and
acettiug the Slave Trade.
Everything was quiet at Havana. Americai s
were scarce and narrowly watched.
Louisville, Dec. 6. —The St Louis papers have
received advices via independence, from Santa Fe,
one month later.
These advices report that there had been several
heavy storms of snow and sleet on the plains, and
that at Fort Union the snow was twenty inches in
depth. The emigrants however, are represented

Buffalo, Dec. S.—There was a terrific storm
last night on the Lakes, and great* fears are enter
tained of extensive loss of life and property.
The steamer Baltic, which left yesterday after
noon for Detroit, returned to-day at noon, with her
cabin stove in and much other damage to her up
per works.
The brig Coucord, which left last night, returned
to port this morning, having lost two locomotives
intended for the Rock Island Railroad. Many ves
sels are still out and much anxiety is felt for them,
as the wind is still very high.
Washington, Dec B.—Mr. Towers, Superintend
ent of public printing, has to-day accepted the pro
posals of Henry V. Butler & Co., of New York, for
furnishing paper for public printing daring the
year commencing with January Ist, they being the
lowest bidders. The terms are : For class 15t,56.80
per ream; class 2d, #8.50 ; class 3d, $8.19. No de
c isiou has been relative to class 4th. The entire
contract of Butler & Co. amounts to nearly SIOO,-
000.
The Ist class consists of 12,000 reams fine print
ing paper, uncallendered, to measure 24 by 38 in
ches and to weigh 45 lbs. to the ream. The 2d
class consists of 2000 reams of the same descrip
tion of paper as above, to weigh 56 lbs. to the ream.
The 3d class consists of 100 reams superfine, hard
sized and callendercd printing paper, to measure
25 by 32 inches, and to weigh 4S lbs. to the ream.
The 4th class consists of 3980 reams ol paper of dif
ferent qualities and sizes.
Dunkirk, Tuesday Dec. 7.—The weather since
the Ist instant has been very favorable, and the
arrivals of Flour have averaged 10,000 bar-els per
day, exceeding by one-half the capacity of the Rail
road to send it forward. There is now flour in
store here to the amount of 55,000 barrels, 85,000
of which are in the hands of dealers and 20,000 on
consignment to Eastern dealers. The steamers
Wisconsin, Sultana, Seuthem and Keystone are
now discharging. 6,000 to 8,000 barrels ol Beef
are in store, and a largo quantity of Pork, Whis
key, Tobacco, Flaxseed and Bacon are arriving.
Flour goes off readily at $5.12}£a5.50 per barrel.
Philadelphia, Dec. B.—A man named Woods
was killed last night on the Norristown Railroad
near Conshohockcn. His body was found lying on
the track this morning, and from its position it is
supposed that he was lying there drunk when the
train passed over him.
Boston, Dec. B.—The barque J. H. Duvall, of
Baltimore, for Boston, struck on Hedge Fence
Vineyard, last night, and was tight at the last ac
counts. She succeeded in discharging one lighter
load of her cargo.
The brig H. Kellog, reported ashore at the same
place, got off without damage.
The British barque Avondale, which left New
Orleans on the 29th of October for Liverpool, has
put in here. Capt. Armstrong died on the 13th of
November. Robert Forbes, a seaman, also died
on the passage.
The steamer America sailed for Liverpool to
day, with 51 passengers and $825,000 in American
gold. * "
Philadelphia Dee. 7.—A letter ffem Tuekerton
Ne w J efsey gives the particulars of the wreck of the
ship Georgia, of Savannah, from Liverpool for New
York, on Long Beach, near Tuekerton, on Faiday
night last. She come ashore in a fog and has since
broken in two. She had 350 passengers on board
all of whom were landed in safety, through the ap
paratus provided by the Government for saving
lives from wrecks. She ship ceme aoi-ore about
two hundred yards from laud, near the station
house. The surf was so heavy that no common
boat could have lived through it. A ball was
thrown with a line attached from the mortar, to
some distance beyond the ship passing over her
This gave a communication with the
shore, and the life car was put into operation,
landing all the passengers without an accident.
Among the passengers are from fifty to sixty
females of all ages. One of them is a young En
glish lady on her way to California in search of
her brother.
Arrival of the 6loop-of-War St. Mary’s.
Philadelphia, Dec. B.—The sloop of-war St.
Mary's, Capt. Magruder, arrived to-day from v
cruise in the Pacific. She has been absent twenty
eeven months, and has sailed 75,000jmilcs. Her
officers and are all well. During the (.raise
she lost, but men, one from consumption and
one froth dysentery. She made the run from Cape
town to Cape Heulopen in 38 days, which place she
reached on Monday night and obtained a pilot next
morning.
The St. Mary’s brings Capetown papers to the
26th of October.
The Great Britain steamer for Australia arrived
atSabel Bay from Liverpool on the 10th.
The papers contain details of the Kaffir war.—
Collisions between the troops are mentioned, but
no decided battles. A band of the rebels from the
colony of Albany were routed by the forces under
\ Barrey, and five rebels killed. Five
gc. were captured.
(Hearno and two men of the 12th regiment
bad been killed by the Kaffirs.
The 9t. Mary’s left at Capetown, loading for Bos
ton, the American clippers Spriughook and Ocean
Wave.
New Orleans, Dec. 7.—8000 bale® of cotton were
disposed of on Tuesday. Prices were irregular
and m ‘Wot of buyers. Low to strict middling
was worth from Bto 8 % cents. Rice commanded
from to 4cents per pound. Freights were
advancing and a penny per pound was asked for
cotton to Liverpool. There is only one disengaged
ship in port at Isew Orleans.
Terrible Accident.—A shocking accident, at
tended with a deplorable loss of life, occurred
yesterday in Thirty-second street, between Third
and Lexington avenues. A large brick building
had been run up to the height of five stories, with
out properly supporting the floors, when as a climax
of folly, a quantity of heavy timber was hoisted to
the uppermost fiat, and piled in a hen*-', so as to
throw a great weight upon one of the temporary
uprights which supported the girders. This tem
porary upright gave way, and thus commenced the
work oi destruction, which ended in the whole
fabric tumbling down in a heap, burying in the
ruins six ot the workmen employed on the build
ing. Three of the unfortunate men were taken
out of the heap dead, and three more horribly
brused. The names of the killed are Joseph
Weaver, the contractor for the frame work; John
Dorsey, and George Doherty, brick masons.—

Message of the Governor of Florida.—Gov,
Brown, of Florida, in his annual message to the
Legislature, urges that provision be made for the
forcible removal of the Serainoles, in case Billy
Bowlegs does not fulfill his promise to emigrate.
A re organization of the militia, and the establish
ment of a public school system, are recommended,
as is also an efficient system of internal improve
ment, in order to stimulate enterprise, invite
immir ation, and develop the State’s varied re
so... es. Its finances are now in a flourishing con
dition, and its people prosperous and happy.

matory Rheumatism.—A young lady, Miss Clark, aged 22
had a severe attack of Inflammatory Rheumatism on the
first of March, 1852, proceeding from the effects of mercury,
of which she was salivated, 1847. She was under the care
of one of the most eminent and kind physicians in the city
of New York. For two weeks she was in the most ago
nizing pains, and every hour her friends expected that
Death would relieve her. Her physician had no hope of her
