Another Test. —This is to certify, that on the kSlh of
September last, we pur hasel of li. D. Rice, b.-q., one of
Mr. J. M. B. Davidson’s “ Fire-kings,” (No. 4, Single
Flange); that on the 14th November past, it was subject
ed to a very severe te t, in the burning ■ our warehouse,
in which was stored a large quantity of whiskey and other
eombustible material. On opening our *a f e, we found ah
our papers, consisting of bills, letters and receipts, perfect

that he continues to manufacture COTTON GINS of a supe
rior quality, at his factory three miles east of the city of
Macon,on the Central Railroad. Having, within the last
year,enlarged his Factory and made great additions to his
machinery,and having the verybestofworkmen.heisnow
prepared to supply the country with Gins unsurpassed (in
any respect) by any made in the United States. The sub
scriber would not speak disparagingly ofany Gin Factory
in the State; yet he thinks it no presumption to say that
his Gins are more universally approved than those from
any factory. Every Gin sent from his factory within the
las'year has given entire satisfaction; he has not heard
the first complaint, but has been informed by many, tha
h : E Gins are superior in every respect to any they have
e'er seen in use ; and in all probability,there jg other
sac ory in the Btatc that has met with such success. He
attributes the tine performance of his Gins to the personal
attention which they receive from him in their construc
tion. Every Gin that leaves his factory, is closely inspect
ed by him during the time of its building and afterwards.
He has never desired,neither does he ever intend to, build
more Gins thau he can properly see to himself. Therefore,
all those who purchase Gins of him, may with confidence
expect a good one, for he assures the public that no other
kind shallleave hisshop.ashiaundividedattention will in
future be given to the building of Gins.
As an evidence of their superior quality, lie refers the
public not only to his numerous patrons, but also to the
premium list of the last Agricultural Fair of the State of
Georgia, where it will be seen he took the premium over all
his competitors,(some of whom were quite formidable,)
and injustice to them he would say they exhibited speci
mens of work hard to beat. And as still further evidence
of the character of his gins, he would state that the Com
mittee appointed to award the premium after the exami
nation made by them, each purchased a gin from him be
fore they left the ground. And notwithstanding the late
ness of the season, his gins were so much liked by people
visiting the Fair, that he sold twenty during the week. He
i 3 well prepared to try all his gins before they leave the fac
tory ; but he deems it unnecessary from the fact that all
his gins are made alike. He does not build a poor gin for
one man and a good one for another. But he will try all
gins when requested to do so.

Hartford, Conn., May 2.—Tho water continued
to rise yesterday until 4 o’clock when it came to a
stand. It was then twenty-nine feet and a half
above low water mark, being two feet six inches
higher than during the erreat flood of 1801.
In the Eastern part of the city, on Commerce,
Front, Kilbourn, Ferry, Potter, Ellery and Charles
streets were covered with water their whole length.
A largo stone scow passed through Front street,
from one end to the other. Hundreds of families
were driven from their dwellings and several per
sons drowned, l'he shad boats were floating
about the city.
A great number of bridges were washed away
or damaged. The canal is also greatly injured.
The damage to factories, mills, &e., is also very
great, and over 2000 operatives have been thrown
out of work. The loss is estimated at SIOO,OOO.
The Alexandria Gazette, of Taesdsy, says the
American Scientific Association, accompanied by
many citizens from Washington and Alexandria,
made a visit to Mount Vernon and some of the
landings on the Potomac, yesterday, (May day,)
on board the steamer George Washington.
Buffalo, May 2.—The loss by the late storm on
Lake Michigan is estimated at $45,000.
The weather here is gloomy. Vessels are arri
ving freely, and nearly two hundred thousand
bushels of corn have been received during the past
24 hours. The receipts of flour and wheat are
moderate.
New York, May 2.—We have later advices here
from Hayti. The Emperor Soloque is making
great preparations for the invasion of Dominieo.
All his floets and army are boing put in fighting
order. Operations to commence May first.
Boston, May 2.—The ship Forrester, from Cal
lao for Boston, went ashore on Sunday at Wellfleet
beach. She will probably be a total loss. The
crew, and cargo of guano will be saved.
A: hilaijelphia, May 2. —The steamship Quaker
City, for the Charleston line, was launched this
afternoon at Kensington. Her length is 24C feet.

SAVANNAH, May s.— Cotton —Arrived since the 27th
ult., 2,228 bales Upland (1,488 Railroad, 850 fr-m
Augusta and landings on the river, 340 via Darien, 50
$ wagons, Ac.) and 859 do. Sea Islands. The exports
for the same period amount to 4,294 bales Upland, and
640 do. Sea Islands, viz:—to Liverpool 1,?47 bales Up
land, to Providence, It. 1., 4C9 bales Upland, to Boston
1,066 bales Upland; r o New York 1,124 bales Upland and
846 do. Sea I-lands; !o Philadelphia 146 bales Upland and
25S do. Sea Island ; to Baltimore 8 bales Upland ; and to
Charleston 184 bales Upland and 36 do. Sea Islands—
leaving on hand and on shipboard not cleared a stock
of 17,828 bales Upland end 3,608 do. Sea Islands, against
27,28-4 bales Upland and 825 do. Sea Islands at the same
time last year.
JThe market opened quite firm with sales on Friday of
679 bales; on Saturday 717 bales were sdd, prices remain
ing unchanged. Monday was observed as a holiday as
usual, and but little business of any Kind was transacted.
During the day the telegraph announced the arrival of the
Pacific —the on'y tffect cf these advices on our market was
to prevent operations to any great extent. The sales on
Tuesday were 246, on Wednesday 183, and yesterday 110
bales. We repeat our quotations of last week, the market
closing dull, with but little inquiry. We quote :

Sea Islands. —There has been a better demand for this
quality of Cotton than for several weeks previous, and
prices continue firm. The sales of the week amount to
upwards of 600 tales, at extremes ranging from 18@28c. —
the bulk at 20@24 cents.
Rice. —The market continues dull and inactive. The
sales have been limited to 200 casks at $3)6@3)4 100 B>s.
Flour. —The demand for this article continues good.—
We hear of sales cf Georgia brands to a considerable ex
tent at $7.50. It is selling from store at $S bbl.
Corn. —The demand is good, and prices have advanc d.
We hear of sales at wholesale at sl. It is selling from store
at $1.05@1.10 $2 bushel. The stock is light.
Oats. —Scarce and in demand. We have heard of no
large sales.
Bacon. —We hve heard of no large transactions. The
stock is large and the demand limited.
Molasses.— The last cargo sales of Cuba were made at
28c., at which figure it is now held. We hear of sales of
New Orleads at 25@26c. $ gallon.
Hay.— The stock in first hands is limited. It is selling
from store at $1.25 100 for Northern and $1.50 for Kas
tern.
Salt. —ls selling from wharf in lots at sl.lO *§ sack.
