New* is received of the*’death of tfte’ Empctor of Morocco, universally regretted fcr his luhjefta, fc/r the couftant humanity he always oUeived towards them. From Berlin we learn, that a convention has been concluded with Poland, and in confie quencc of which Dantzick, with the diftrift on this fide the Warta, will come under the dominion of Prutia the firftday of July. And the Count de Thiennes de Lumbife,-- Member of Congress for the Province of , Hainauh, has been sent with the fame charac ter to negotiate with the National Assembly of France. • NEW.YORK, April 2*. Letters from England received at Philadel phia by the last arrivals, mention that the- Court of London has ordered 24 ihips of the line to be immediately equipped, and all it* officers on half pay to be recalled. May 6. A society is now instituted im New-jersey, under the name of the Burling ton Society, for the promotion of agriculture and doraeftic manulaftures. It is remarkable that the votes of the society (by its cffnftitu tion) art not to be valid, unless taken by means of grains of corn ; the yellow grains to betoken the aijfifm4UJve> znd the red grains the negative. - On the 6th u!t. came on a fsvere htirricane r which did cowiiderable damage through the lower parts of Virginia.- lnChailes-city and Dinwiddie counties, it HefLoyed a number of hams and vast quantities of fencing, and many of the towns it blew down several ehimpies. The storm was accompanied with large quantities of hail, which has very much injured the fruit trees, wheat and oats. In Frederick county it overturned several va luable mills; and fourhoufesat the new glass manufactory were blown down with the peo ple in. them. They were much bruised, but fortunately no lives loft. Hxtra&cf a Utter from Halifax, Neva-Scotia, dated April IQ. « The loyalists, who have not received eompenfation from government for their loiies, are heieby informed, that their committee have leteived information from the gentle men in London, to whose care they entrusted theit petitions to Parliament, that every ex ertion was making to get it properly intro duce which there appeared little doubt. The temleraen recommended it as absolutely ueceffary to» each applicant, to he ready to produce the strongest auddullett testimony of fervices.and.loffes, and most especially of the reafon.s, if any, why the claims were not made in time, and how 'it was irapqffible for them to be within the time limited by the aft; all Which will be required by the government, and must be precisely fpeci6ed.” A letter from London dated March 1 6, via-Boston, mentions, that “ by a late order, no-article whatever can be admitted into the ports of Great-Britain from America, in any */effel whatever, Britiflror foreign, except the fame is of the aftual produftion of the United States. Forty bales of cotton, from Maryland, in. a Britifl* (hip, are now under feizuie: Whatever is sent hereafter, of this deftription, must firft be to some admissible port on the continent, from whence it may be carried to Great-Btitain.* A private letter from Edinburgh, mentions ♦he death of the celebrated Dr. Cullen, in the 80th year of his age. 'being the day ap pointed for the General Assembly of this ftste to meet at Augusta, several of th* Members appeared on that day, but not • fufficient num ber to proceed to business, both branches ad journed till next day 1 end after a fitting of four days, adjourned on Friday evtuin tfine Time will not permit ua rn fever .our rwdew at this tirtif with a*ty nf their proceedings; bur a full detail of the fame lhall be given in our next. On the nth of February last, in the House of Commons of Great Britain, Mr. Fox wiftiqjd to know why the forts they have held in America since the peace have not been ceded to the States. Whether they ought to be ceded by treaty or not he could not pretend to fay ; but it was very lurprifing that the five provinces they nowpoffefa in America should require as. many troope to protest them as when they had 13 provinces to guard and keep in fubjeftion. With refpeft to Gibraltar, he would infill that there did not exist the ■ smallest occasion for any additional troopato protest that garrif m ; it has recently been put into a state of defence, which they have been told is absolutely next to invulnerable. For the Weft India ifiamis, the true mode would be, to prevent any surprise, to keep a luffiti ent number of troops at Halifax, wheie ihs' climate, and convenience for an army, weic certainly more encouraging than any of their iffands in the Weft Indies. The Chancellor of the Exchequer thought that at present it would be impohtirk to go . into any difeuffion concerning the forts which Government lias kept possession of since the peace at Paris- in 1783. At present he could not take upon himfelf to fatisfy the Honourable Member, as the divulging of certa-.n cireum ftances might probably affeft the intcrcft ot that country ; he therefore declined entering into any detail upon the fubjeft.
