Extrad of a letter from the camp at Coimba tore, ‘within IJO miles of T'tppob Suhuns capital , Seringapatum, dated the 30 th of Augujt, 1790. “ The war with Tippoo ha* been com menced thel'e three mouth* pal!, although no , thing of consequence ha* jet been done, ex cept the capture of this part of his country, of which we made ourfelve* matter* with lit tle oppoiition, Tippoo having retired with his army through the mountaiua into the infe rior part of his kingdom, where it is supposed he will make a fiaud. We remain encamped here ou account of the rains; when they are over we (hall march for hi* capital, Seringa patam, which it is said is itrongly fortified. Mr. Sheldon, an experienced distiller in this city, has broughf the diflilling of GIN to such perfection, rhrt the ftrfl judges (Euro peans aud Aiucricaus) pronounce u equal to the bed imported from Holland. Mr. Sheldon having made foine experiments on the juice of thr Maple Tree declares, that, when dittoed, it yields a liquor not unlike AH RAC, and superior in flavorj aud that, * ; from the bed computation be ha* been able to make# a tree will product as many pints of this liquor as it does pounds of sugar. This dreadful accident waa occasioned by putting a quantity of flix to dry upon the dove. The flax taking fire, M*Do* nald took it up in hi* arms to throw it out of the door, but as he carried it, the blaze caught the loft floor, which was loolely laid with boards, and draw ovtr the leamS-.
