Th e official appointment of Simeon E vs, Eifq. to the office of Collector for the Port odCharlefton, was received by Thurs. day evening’s mail. Prom the Baltimore Telegraph ofFcbrua. ry 15. By lie late arrivals both to the north ward am! southward, as well as at this port, our European advices are brought down to the 3til day of December. The latest we are now in poflfeilian of is the verbal infor mation communicated by captain Adams, who arrived here lad Saturday fiom Lisbon, which place he left on the 3d of January, He perfiils in the corrcdlncfs of his detail, which in fuhftance is ; that 0* the laid of December hefaw at the Swcdiih consul’s of fice official bulletins of a continued aftUn between the French and Ruffians, which laded with small intermission for 8 days, and ter minated in the total dlfmemberment and de. jlrufi'ion of the Ruffian army. He fays that the accounts dated positively, that 40,000 laid down their arms, after stipulating for an uninterrupted return to their own coun try; and tfcit 20,000, attempting to force their way through the French army, were cut to pieces. < v Extract of a letter from Wajhlngiort) dated the l\Ji of February . The government has received dispatch es from Mr. Manro, dared the 26th Nov. which Hated that the day before he received a note from Lord Midgrave, in answer to two of his, which accedes to an examina tion of the differences with us—thus cur profpefts are brightening in that quarter. The bill proposing a tax on Africans, on the , third reading, was recommitted. Thi topic of the day hete, is the junftiun of the Burr and Clinton parties in New.Yotk; the object of this is laid to he for the Colonel th »«*“"• “1* fete, ron{V ,£ }' ,f •’’c® in NfU'- York, and in return the Clinton interdl is to be supported by his friends. Mr. John Randolph moved, this day, ff.e fame amend ment to the conliitution, which he moved the last feffior, viz. “ The judges of the supreme, and all a ther courts of the U. States, {hall be re moved from office by the Frefidcnt, on the joint address of both hoafes of Congress, re quefling the fame.” AUGUSTA, March 8. NEWS CONDENSED. Since our lad, as we expefted, we have received a considerable addition to our for mer supply of foreign news. A vessel which failed from Lisbon on the find of January, brings information that the French, after eight days hard fighting, defeated the Allies, taking 40,000 Ruffians, prisoners, and cut ting 20,000 more to pieces, who would ob stinately persist in returning home without leave or licence from the little Curfican / Bonaparte, it is said, has formed the gene rous idea of reflating Poland, once mare to her independence. Koffioniko, they fay, had been sent to his native country, to favor this project. Bavaria and Hungary, it ap pears, have flattering profpefts, in conse quence of the rapid revolutions in Germany, of becoming the one, more refpedlable, and the other more independent, at the expence of the house es Austria. Prince Rohan, whose column had been cuf off by the grand army, in endeavouring to form a junction with the Arch.duke Charles in Italy, was taken by Maffena, with 7,000 men—all his colours, camp, equipage Ac. By the last accounts a party of the French array had reached to the environs of Tried, while Maffena with the main body pressed forward to Vienna, Augereau on his part, was not idle, as will appear by his letter. On the other fide the Englifli, Ruffians and Swedes were concentrating their forces, in Hanover, while gen. Brune was at An twerp with 43, or 50,000 men, preparing to defend Holland and the low conn tries Gen. Lefebure was encamped at Cologne with 70,000 men. By late orders from Bonaparte, we find that in addition to ail these, 200,000 more were immediately re quired by confeription ! The last news from England states, that the price of cotton had been lower than for several years pad, fourteen pence only ! and this probably, on account of Bonaparte’s rapid movements on the continent. A feccnd formidable expedition failed from England to join the firft, in Hanover— the Duke of Cambridge was preparing to follow them* The Swedes and Ruffians from the Baltic, were to makeja grand diver {ion in fav*r of the Emperor of Germany and his brother of Ruflia, towards Bohemia. The King ofPrullia is said to have marched into Bavaria, and surprised several parties of the French army, tho’ the German accounts date that he went only roprorefl the line of neutrality. The body of lord Nelfcn was to have lain in Pate in London—a gen eral faft or fcaft took place in England, on account of the defeat of the combined fleets. The cotton mamifaflurers are represented to have been greatly at a and the three percent confols were at 5 1 and a f>acm tlan! The people under all these flattering circumftancts, are said to have been in great f p t r,u —the IrHh ejhep ! and the only cause of depression appears to have been, that the Englifli ministers feinted willing to relax from their late resolution, of harraffing and fpoliating the commerce of America, Bonaparte is Gated to have sent several thonfand Nappy dors, to the king of Piuflia, as compensation for the trcfpaffcs his army had committed, in marching through An. fpach, without his leave. —The national Bank at Paris had such a run on it, that it was found necessary to difperlc the croud, for fear of a tumult. Considerable damage, wepnderftand, has been done lad week, in the environs of Au gusta, by lire, which communicated from the woods, to houses, fences, fodder &c. Though difcoqraglng the News from Eu rope, we ate glad to find that c*ur cotton buyers ftili offer a decent price—this week cotton fells from i6ro 17 cents. The favors of the ShcritFs of Franklin and Oglethorpe came too lateforfales on the firff Tucfday in April, as the law requires they should be publHbcd 30 days previous to the day of lale. For a few days pad, feme specks have been observed from this place, on the fui's disk. Our Correfpandcnts must cxcufc us this werk. THE 4SUR T DEPARTMENT. January, 15, 1806. Driven from its capital to Bruun, from Bruan to Olmutz and form Olmutz to Cracow in Poland, it has as little prefpeff of repofein its present retreat as before it left Vienna.--and should a froft have set in, or the tran(ports have been difmifled which conveyed the British troops to Hanover, they will be in a situation no less aukwatd ard perilous. We were not correft in fia tiog that the capital of Bohemia had been taken, but as several French divisions are marching through that kingdom, forae of them will probably take that route for Harm, ver, and arrive very mfeafonably for the troops now there Baltimore F. Gazette , A Hcffian armourer is far'd to have dis. covered a composition, by the application of which fire arms are so much improved, that the range of their fbot is more than doubled.
