Horridle Murders in Eussell County,
Alabama.
A terrible tragedy, most of the details of
which are yet involved in mystery, was en
acted in Russell county, Ala., in the Uchee
settlements a few miles west ol Crawford,
on Monday night last. The victims were
Mr. Isaac Porter and his wife. It appeared
upon the investigation, that Mr. Po<ter, who
was a young man recently married, was
living near his mother, and was in the hab
it of feeding her stock early in the morning.
On Tuesday morning, he not coming over
a9 usual to attend to this business, the old
lady repaired to his house to see if anything
had happened, and there found Mrs. Por
ter in her bed dead and Mr. P. insensible.
Subsequently Mr. Porter revived for a time
and stated that during the night his wile
awakened him told him she heard someone
in the house ; that he started to get out ol
bed, when several heavy blows were dealt
him—he remembered having received three.
Of what happened afterwards he knew
nothing. Mrs. Porter had been beaten to
death by blows upon her head and else
whore, and medical men were satisfied that
she had been violated by some man or
men. from marks about her person. Th<
deceased were poor people, aid the horrible
crime could not have been committed from
any hope of obtaining money. There was
no positive evidence pointing to any par
ticular persons as the guilty parties, but
there was a suspicion that the deed had
been committed by negroes.
Mr. Porter died after telling all he kne w
of the horrible tragedy— Enquirer.

General Presentment of the Grand Jury of the
September Term, 1858, Superior Court,
WE the Grand Jurors, sworn, chosen and se
lected for the September Term of the Su
perior Court, beg leave to make the following
general presentments. Suitable Committees have
been appointed to examine the boons of the Clerk
of the Superior and Inferior Courts, which Com
mittees beg leave to report as follows: We find
said books to be kept in a very accurate and
decent manner, reflecting much credit upon the
intelligence and business capacity of the Clerk,
George W. McDuffie.
We also take much pleasure in referring to the
creditable manner in which the books of the Ordi
nary are kept The public buildings have been
inspected through appropriate Committees, and
the same report that they find the Court House
in fair condition; they observe there is some unfin>
ished work in the Court room, which they find to
be in progress
The Jail is reported to be very insecure, so far
as the upper story is concerned; the dungeon they
regard as tolerably safe, they regard the house in
rather a filthy condition.
Upon examination of the steps and platform of
the jail, they think some repairs to be necessary,
and recommend that the necessary repairs be
done.
The Treasurei’s books have been examined and
the Committee find at the March Term of ihe
Court, that the County Treasurer, E. VI. Butt, had
in his hands [51,208,88] twelve hundred and eight
dollars and e ghty-eight cents, ana that he has
paid out, and lias satisfactory vouchers for,
[5901,16] nine hundred and one dollars and
teen cents, leaving a balance on hand of [5307,72]
three hundred and seven dollars and seventy-two
cents.
We find the roads and bridges, with the excep
tion of Milton’s bridge, in fair condition.
In view ot the various types of crime, which we
in our humble judgement believe, emanate from
the retail traffic of spirituous liquors, to wit: pros
tituting the morals of the youth ot our county,
corrupting our negroes and encouraging all kind
of vice and immorality, desire more effectually to
restrict the traffic of spirituous liquors, hence we,
the Grand Jurors of the county, would respect
fully recommend to our Senator and Representa
tive, the propriety of endeavoring to secure the
passage of a special act lor the purpose ot sup
pressing wholly, or in part, the retail traffic
We would respectfully insist that our Senator
and Representative bring the following resolution
before the present Legislature, and use due vigil
ance to secure its passage, to wit: that the amount
paid by retail dealers for license, be left with the
Grand Jurors empannelied lor the March Term i
of the Court of each year. And further, that it 1
be left discretionary with the Judges of the Inte
rior Court, whether license be granted to the appli
cant or not.
In addition to the above, wo would suggest the J
propriety of a repeal ot the present law, allowing
any number of negroes to live by themselves
without the presence of a white person. And
would respectfully ask our Senator and Represen
tative to bring to the consideration of the present
legislature and if possible to have the law re
pealed
In the close of our labors we take great pleas*
ur pn expressing our entire satisfaction of die
dignified and irnpar ial manner in which his Hon
• >r, Judge VVorrill has presided over the deliber
tions of the Court, also, we esteem it a privilege
to tender our thanks to the Solicitor General
Oliver, for his attention and courtesy throughout
• he entire session of the Court
We request that the abov presentments be pub
lished in the Columbus Times and E quirer, this

GRENADA ELIXIR,

South American Antidote for Malaria?
Is a sure Cure and Perfect Route to Ague
and Fever, Chill and Fever, Dumb A&ue,
and all Bilious Affections l
IT has been thoroughly tested in thousands of
cases, some of years’ standing, where Quinine
and all the most popular remedies of the day bad
failed, but the Elixir has met with the most tri
umphant success ; never failed to cure the most
obstinate cases. The unanimous testimony of all
who have used or witnessed its operations, declare
it to be fhe most extraordinary medicine everdi?-
covered for the quick and permanent cure of Fe
ver and Ague. It operates as a gentle Tonic and
stimulant, gradually but surely ; eradicates every
vestige of disease, and restores the system to health
and vigor. It imparts new vitality to the blood,
and will soon induce the glow of health to return
to the pale and swarthy complexion.
The advantage of this medicine therefore is, that,
a cure must be radical and complete ; not simply
breaking the Chill, by producing a “new impres
sion” upon the nervous system, without reference
to the operations of the malarious poison, which
is allowed to remain unchanged and renew its at

ceased to feel the artificial disease—induced by

Scientific American
PROSPECTUS OF
VOLUME FOURTEEN,
BEGINS SEPTEMBER 11, 1858.
Mechanics, Inventors, Manufacturers
ami Farmers,
THE SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN has now reached
its fourteenth year, and will enter upon anew
volume on the 11th September It is ihe only week
ly publication ot the kind now issued in this coun
try, and it has a very extensive circulation in all
the States of the Union. It is not, as some might
suppose from its title, a dry, abstruse work on tech
nical science ; on the contrary, it so deals with the
great events going on in the scientific, mechanical
and industrial worlds, as to please and instruct eve
ry one. Ii the mechanic or artizan wishes to know
the best machine in use or how to make any sub
stance employed in his business—if the housewife
wishes to get a recipe for making a good color, &c.
—if the inventor wishes to know what is going on
in the way of improvements—if the manufacturer
wishes to keep posted with the times, and to employ
the best facilities in hisbusiness—if the man of lei
sure and stud} wishes to keep himself familiar with
the progress made in the chemical laboratory, or in
the construction ot telegraphs, steamships, railroads
reapers, mowers and a thousand other machines
and appliances, both of peace and war—ail these de
siderata can be found in the Scientific American, and
not elsewhere. They are here presented in a reliable
and interesting form”, adapted to the comprehension
of minds unlearned inthe higner branches of sci
ence and art.

This is a purely vegetable compound, prepared on

of its great success in most of the European States,
Us introduction into the United Slates was intended
more especially for those of our (..therland scattered
here and thereover the fa-e of this mighty country.
Meeting with great success among them, I now of
fer it to the American public, knowing thatirs truly
wonderful medicinal virtues must be acknowledged.
It is particularly recommended to those persons
whose constitutions may have been impaired by Ihe
continuous use of ardent spirits, or other forms ol
dissipation. Generally instantaneous in < ffect, it
finds its way directly to ihe seat of life, thrilling and
quickening every nerve, raising up the drooping
spirit, and, in fact, infusing new healt h and vigor in
the system.
NOTICE, —Whoever expects to find this a beve

and low spirited, it will prove a grateful aromatic
cordial, possessed of singular remedial properties.
