Let there be no Secrets in Medicine, or rather
no pretended secrets. The Medical Faculty pub- ;
lish as soon as made, all their discoveries, and •
almost all that is known ot real value for the 1
cure of disease, has been discovered by them.—
Dr. Ayer takes the honorable, honest course, and
right because it is honest. lie goes to work and
invents the best remedy vhieh medical skill can
devise for the cure of certain complaints: then
publishes what it is and maintains his monoply of !
it solely by making it cheaper, better, more per- j

exact this of all who offer medicines, they would ;
have much less trade and trash to swallow.—A T . i

Thn New York State Fair.
Syp.acuse, Oct. 5, 1858.
The State Fair opened here most aus*
pieiously to-day. The weather, which was
cloudy last night, was clear and beautiful
this morning, anti just cool enough to be
pleasant both for visitors and stock. The
attendance on the ground during the day
was not large, but far above the average of
the first day. The entries, however, are so
much in advance of last year that the total
receipts already exceed the gross amount
taken during all the last fair.
Ex-President Martin Van Buren was on
the ground to day.
The exhibitors have not yet got their
articles fully arranged.
Cattle and stock are still arriving in large
numbers, consequently the fair is not yet
seen to full advantage; but the exhibition
even at this time is highly interesting.
The cattle show will be grand. They
are more diffused among exhibitors, • and
there are a greater number of tine speci
mens than at any previous year The
scarcity of fancy breeders is remarkable,
nearly all being shown by farmers. There
are splendid cattle oftrie Durhams, Devons,
Hereforde, Ayreshires and fullbloods. The
grades re also remarkably fine this year—
many of them but iittle inferior to luliblood?.
Police Practice.
We have been under frequent obligations
to our police for information concerning ar
rests, &c , for which we tender andw our
obligations. But they have a practice—
regarded by them the best policy—of con
cealing robberies and other crimes from the
press while they are on pursuit ot the
perpetrators. It is a mistaken idea that
rascals will be a whit more careless of-con
cealment because they are not published,
and that the press can do much*to put the
public on the lookout, there is no question.
In our large cities the stolen goods are
described in the papers that they may be
recognised if offered for sale, and the whole
details are given promptly to the papers
when any crime demanding investigation
is committed. But with us, the theif has
time to get to the ends of the earth before
intelligence is lodged anywhere save at the
police office.— Augusta Dispatch.
We think that newspaper reports of
crimes, and premature, disclosures of sus
picions, do more than all other causes to
prevent the certainty of punishment in our
large cities.
We are also of opinion—and the opin
ion is confirmed by daily observation—that
our newspapers are too much occupied with
“police practices/’and with the doings or
misdoings of criminals, to the negiect of
many wholesome topics of instruction and
entertainment. Charleston Courier.
From Santa Fe. —St. Lon is, October 4.
A despatch from Independence, per United
States Express to Booneville, says that the
Santa Fe mail arrived there on the 2d in
stant, with dates to the 13th ult. Mr. Craig,
the hay contractor for port Massachusetts,
is supposed to have been murdered by the
Indians.
Considerable politicial excitement pre
vails in Santa Fe between the regular Dem
ocratic nominations and what the Gazette
calls bobtail Democracy.
The Apache Indians are still tronblesome
about Fort Buchanan. They have stolen
a lot of Government stock.
No news from Fort Defiance. It is sup
posed that the expedition against the Nav
ajoe Indians will be abandoned.
