THE CITY:
The Panorama.— The splendid Panorama now
on exhibition in this city, by Dr. Beale, it will be
seen, remains here hot two days more. Ail who
have not 9een it should do so at once, as it is
well worth the price of admission. The scenery
is beautiful, the painting well executed, the masic
good, the lecture instructive, and the wax figures
amusing. There will be an exhibition the after
noon at three o’clock.
The Weather —Business, &c.
A heavy rain fell yesterday and the dust i3 at
last settled. The day was dark and the thick,j
black clouds hung over head, like a vast curtaio. j
f ires, too, were comfortable, as the raia brought j
with it a cool wind, which reminded one of old
winter. Little bussioess was carried oq in the
cotton market—Mondey being a dull day and
little cotton brough in the city from the country. I
The Indian Empire’s news had no effect on the i
market. The trade continues active in the vari
ous departments of the city. It is twice as heavy
as it was this time last year.
The Incoming Cotton Crop —Weather,
&T-—The weather for the last ten days, in
this section of Georgia, has been for most
part of the time, clear and pleasant. The
cotton crop is opening very finely, and plan
ters busily engaged in gathering the silvery
fruit. In some places the cotton crop will
be short, but in general it wilt yield a full
and fair average turn out. As considerable
quantities of fresh lands have been opened
since last season, the cotton crop in South
ern Georgia may be expected to be some
what increased also, over and above the
production of any year previous to this.—lb

Discipline in a Sinking Ship. —When the
British troop steam transport Birkenhead
struck a rock, near the Cape of Good Hope,
and broke in two, there were- only boats
enough to *ave the women and children.—
There was no rushing and crowding then.
Col. Moore called his brave Inni'skiliensand
foimed them into line on the deck of the
sinking steamer, while their wives and chil
dren embarked in the boats. The noble
fellows, as they stood in line, gave three
hoarse cheers for tiieir departing dear ones,
and maintained their ranks unbroken till
jhe deck was swept from under their feet.

Human Grief.
BY WILLIAM F. SANFORD, A. X.
The sharpest thorn protects the sweetest rose,
The sweetest rose is sweeter crushed,
On darkest clouds the brightest stars repose,
And Music's softest strains in cat'racts hush’d.
Its precious juice the trodden trine-press yields,
The udder pressed, its pleasaot food—
Rich harvests wave in deeply lurrow'd fields,
The smitten rock pours out the cooling flood-
Our human griefs, not always wisely felt,
Than joys are oftea more oar friends ;
The dross abides in hearts that never melt,
To tears the rainbow oft its radaince lends.
Prophetic Hope illumes the gloom cf grief,
The furrowed heart its harvest bears;
Tbe angel reapers gather ia the sheaf
Of golden grain, grown in the field of cares.
0 weeper I on the weary way of life,
Look at thy suff’ring Christ, and sing !
A moment more of sorrow- and of strife.
And thou art garnered from the winnowing !
