Beale's great Panorama will te ex

occasion is the benefit of Signor Vivaldi, the train
ner of the incomparable Marrinetts. Anew and
splendil paihtsng—the Bower of Beauty—will be
shown to nsghs for the first time. Those who
have been lortunat. enough to witness the Pano

every one go.
Interesting Calculation —A Yankee is
a calculating institution, and nothing comes
along that he does not subject to the ordeal
of figures, in some wa v. The last instance
that has come under our observation is the
following, which occurs in the course of
some editorial speculations upon the comet:
I's tail is at least 6,000 OjO miles in length.
To grease that tad, it is estimated, would
use up a basin of fat as large as Lake Ere,
and give constant employment to 50,000
“daubers,” for 10 years.

Death’s Final Conquest-
The glories of our birth aod State,
Are shadows, not substantial things ;
Tnere ia no armeur agaiust fate
D;ath lavs h icy banda on kings ;
Sceptre and crown,
Must tumble dowa,
And in the dust be equal made
With the poor crocked scythe and spade.
Some men with swords may reap the field,
And plant fresh laurels when they kill;
But their strong nerves at last must yield,
They tame but one anotker still;
Early or late,
They stoop to fate,
And must give up their murmuring breath,
When they, pale captives,creep to death.
The garlands wiiher on your biow,
Then boast no more your mighty deeds ;
Upon death’s purple altar, now,
See where the victor victim bleeds:
All heads must come
To the cold tomb,
Only the actions of the just
Smell sweet and blossom in the dust.

OBITUARY^
Mrs. Charity J. Tarver died tn Russ°ll coun
ty, Aia., on the 3d of Oct 1853, in her 28th year
ftbe professed religion and joined the \1 E. church
in 1852 Sne wts the daughter of Win, P. and
Mrs. Elhtabe h Alston, and was married to Mr.
Jno. Tarver in 1354.
On Sabbath be tore her death, she attended
church, though slightly indisposed ; oo Tuesday
she was considered by her physician and friends
improving, but on Sabbath morning she had a •
congestive chd , and at 2 o’clock was dead.
n the death of this most excellent woman, we ;
are assured that another humble and submissive ,
Christian, has triumphed over our last enemy, and
given her dying testimony in proof of the divinity j
of the gospel, the power ol the Cross to save 1
Her last words were, there is a reality in it. I have
a father in Heaven, that will take care of me. As
in life, so in a- ath, she evinced the steadfastness
of her faith and comfort in God. Possessed of a
meek and quiet spirit, unobtrusive in manner, her
piety fell bke a soft, and pure light upon her house
hold, he< husband and children, and servants, a re
fining and elevating influence, and the commuuity
i ia which she lived, saw in her daily walk and
conversation, the excelleacy of the knowledge of
; Christ Je-us the Lord.
An affectionate daughter and sister, a devoted
wile and mother, a kind mistress, ha* thus passed
away; she conquered .by faith. May those she
; loved and from whom she has been taken, strive
to meet h=r in the home of the good.
“Could friends have lengthened out tby days,
And kept thee from the grave,
Thou wouidst have lived tor maay years,
But oh! we could not snve.
“With resignation, th*n we bow.
To our Heavenly Father’s will,
Mysterious though h'S ways appear,
ffe’s wise and gracious still.
T. H. Dawson.
DIED,
la this place at the residence of her uncle. Dr
E. G. VViiii ims >D, Miss Carrie Clayt n, second
daughter of Mr. aod Mrs. P. A. Clayton, age 17
years. 7 months and 14 davs. None knew her
hut to love her.
“And we have parted, Carrie, thou art gonof
Gone in thine inntce..ce, meek, suffering one.
j I hv weary spirit breathed iiself to sleep
1 So peacefully, it seemed a sin to weep,
| In those fond watches who around thee stood,
And felt,even then, that God, even then, wasgood.
Like stars that struggle through ’he clouds of night,
; Thine eyes one moment caught a glorious light,
| As if to thee, in that dread hour, ’twere given
; To know on earth what faith believes ot heaven ;
! Then like tired breezes didst thou sink to rest,.
Nor one, one pang the awful change confess’d,
j Death stole in softness o’er that lovely face,
! And touched each leature with anew boru grace ;
j On cheek and brow unearthly beauty lay,
And told that life’s poor cares had passed away.
In my last hour be heaven so kind to me ’.
1 ask no more than this—*.o die like thee.”
