THE DAILY TIMES.
THE CITY.
About Town-
There is nothing of iuterest going on in the city.
The farmers still bring their cotton to market as
last as it is picked, filling up our warehouses to
thejoiat. Indeed the patience of the teamster is
tried as he waits for his turn to unload his wagon.
The Muscogee Railroad cannot keep up with the
ran, though it has called into requisition maoy
freight cars from the Central Road.
The Mobile and Girard road is doing well—
bringing into the city often over 700 bags a
day.
The river is low and the boats are still tied up.
The recent rains did not swell it in the least.
The dust is bad. How it settles, like a dense
fog, about dark, through the streets and Janos of
the city? The working on the plank road has
been completed and it is almost as good now as
new.
New Advertisements.
Those in want ol a snug little farm as low
down as Worth county, already storked, can
hear ot one by reading the advertisement of Thos
W. Kendall.
Win. Gibson,or Talbot county, oilers a reward
for a * tray sorrel mare.
The City Light Guards are'requested to beat
their Armory on Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock.
See also notice to Debtors and Creditors, sign
by Thos. J. Davis, Agent.
Dillingham & Denson are now opening at their
Furniture Store, a large lot of beautiful and ser
viceable goods in their line. Give them a call.
Henry A, Wise.
A correspondent “Zeno” of the Montgomery
Advertiser thus speaks of Gov. Wise of Va.:
Differing with Gov. Wise, as the great
majority of the Southern Rights men have
done, they see and appropriate this Presi
dential game. They differ with him upon
an abstract principle of no practical import.
They see him standing up boldly and avow
ing his independent faith, and disdaining to
creep into the Presidency. They known
his fidelity to South. They remember that
for twenty-five years he lies stood and
braved the opposition and obloquy of our
enemies in the Federal Capital and in Vir
ginia, dealing always in our defence hercu
lean blows. They remember when but a
young man he bearded John Q. Adams in
the Hall of Representatives—‘-the Douglas
in his den.” They remember his great
speech in Corinthian Hall in 1856. The
Leaguers say “hurrah for Wise !” As be
tween him and the “Intriguers,” give us
the hero orator of the Old Dominion ! We
can trust him with the banner of the South.
He does not much flatter us; hut he always
fights and never falters. Give us Henry A
Wise!
A Husband Rewarded. —ln France the
Society for the Protection of Animals does
not enjoy that popular respect which it de
serves, the small wits of the capital indulg
ing in endless jokes at its expense. The
last joke is of this effect:
A countryman, armed with an immense
club, presents himself before the Piesident
of the Society, and claims the first prize.’
He is asked to describe the act of humanity
on which he founds his claim.
“I saved the lile of a wolf,” replies the
countryman , “I might easily have killed
him with this bludgeon,” and he swings his
weapon in the air, to the intense discomfort
of the President.
“But where was this wolf ?” inquires the
latter, “what had he done to you ?”
“He had just devoured my wife,” was
his reply.
The President reflects an instant and
then says, “My friend, I am of opinion
that you have been sufficiently rewarded.”
