in another column.

A Singular Phenomenon. —ln the recent ad
dress of Hon. T. L. Clingman before the North
Carolina State Fair, he mentions in connection
with the manufacture of wine, and the difficulty
on the Atlantic slope of the United States in pre
venting its ascctous fermentation, a remarkable
laot concerning a locality of the Western part of
that State. In a district of a few miles in extent
on the Tyron mountain, neither dew nor frost is
ever known. The same district is remarkable for
the variety and excellence of its native grapes,
and they arc often found in fine condition in the
open air as late as December. The dryness of the
atmosphere in the locality mentioned, and its
equability of temperature are most remarkable,
and we should like to know more concerning it.—

A Appeal for Are to the Sextant of the Old Brick
Meetlnonse.
BY A GASPER.
0 sextant of the meetinouse. wich sweeps
And dusts, er is suposed too ! and makes fires.
And lites the gass, and suintimes leaves a screw
loose
in wich case it smells orful-worse than lam-pile:
And wrings the Bel and toles it when men dyes
to the grief of survivin pardners, and sweeps
pathes
And for the servases gits SIOO per annum,
Wich them that thinks deer, letem try it;
Cretin up before star-lite in all wethers and
Kindlin fires when the wether is as cold
As zero, and like as not grean wood for kindlers
i would’nt be hired to do it for no some—
But o sextant! there aro 1 kermodity
Wick’s more than gold, wich doant cost nothin,
Worth more than anything exsep the Sole of Mann
i mean pewor Are, sextant, i mean pewer Are !
0 it is plenty out o dores, so plenty it doant no
What on airth to dew with itself, but flya about
Scatering lcavs and bloin of men’s halts ;
in short, its jest “fro as are” out dores.
But o sextant, in our church its scarce as piety,
scarce as bank bills wen agints beg for mischuns,
Wich some say is purty often (taint nothin to me
Wat i give aiut nothing to nobody;) but o sextant
u shet 500 men, wimmeu and children,
Speskally the latter, up in a tite place,
Some has bad breths, none aint 2 swete,
Some is fevery, some is scrotilus, some has bad
teath,
And some haint none, and some aint over cleen ;
But every lon em breethes in <fc out & out in,
Say 60 times a minit, or 1 million and a half
breths an our.
Now how long will a chureh-ful of are last at
that rate,
1 ask you, say 15 mi nits, and then wats to be did ?
Why then they mustbretho it all over agin,
And then agin, and so on, till each has took it
down
At least 10 times, and let it up agin, and wats
more
The same individible dont have the privilege
of breethen his own are, and no ones else ;
Each one mus take whatever comes to him.
O sextant, doant you no our lungs is bellussos,
To bio the fire of life, and keep it from
goin out; and how can bollusses bio without
wind,
And aint wind are ? i put it to your conschens.
Are is the same to us as milk to babies,
Or water is to fish, or pcudlums to clox.
Or roots and airbs unto an injun Doctor,
Or little pils unto an omepath.
Or boys to gurls. Arc is for us to breethe,
Wat sifinifies who preeches if i cant breetho ?
Wats Pol ? Wats Polios ? to sinners who are ded ?
Ded for wantofbreth? why sextant, when we dye
Its only coz we cant breethe no more—thafs all.
And now, o sextant, let me beg of you
2 let a little are into our church.
(Pewer are is sertiu proper for the pews)
And do it weak days and Sundays tew.
it aint much trouble—only make a hole
And the are will come in of itself
(it luvs to come in whare it can git warm :)
And o how it will rouze the people up.
And sperrit up the preecher, and stop gaps,
And yawns and figgits as effectooal
As wind on the dry Doans the Proffit tells of.

the Ohio and Mississippi railroad,
about eighteen miles from Mitchell, a singular
accident happened last night. The middle car got
off tho track, and crossed a bridge, breaking every i
tie on the road, and in that condition went a quar- !
ter of a mile. No one was hurt, but all wore
vqry much frightened. Tho train was going at
the rate of half a mile per minute when the acci
dent occurred, which accounts for the off-of-tbe
track car being dragged a quarter of a mile be
fore the locomotive could be stopped. It was
certainly very singular that this middle car should
thus go along off the track without displacing the
car behind and the ear before. Such an accident
may never again happen without throwing the
whole train off the track, and wounding or killing
somebody. — Louixvi lie Courier , Nov. 9.

it in the hand, and aga.n lub it gently with he

a thread to dry. This operation should not be
conducted near to a fire, owing to the inflammable
nature of the eamphene vapor. The receipts giv

HAVING purchased land in the West, I now

I now reside, known as the Barna Ivey Plantation
Contains 2,475 acres, with a large proportion of

cultivation, thoroughly drained, with a large num
ber ot well located ditches. The dwelling is
commodious, having 6 large rooms, neatly finish
ed.and is situated within the corporate limits o
Glennville, convenient to the Colleges and
Churches. Ihe out houses are in good repair and
sufficient for the accommodation of 100 negroes.
On th s place, are two new gin houses, one of
which is propelled by water power, to which is
attached a grist mill, all in good order.
Lying broads.de this place is mv other planta

taining 901 acres. The dwelling, out-ho. ses, gin
house and screw are all new and well finished,
and equally convenient to Glenoville. Being de
termined to sell, 1 would not object to dividing
my lands to suit purchasers. To those acquainted
with these lauds I need not say more—to those at
a distance, I would say that they cannot be ex
celled in point of health or productiveness in east
Alabama.
Glennville is noted for the morality, intelligence
and refinement of its citizens. It is situated 12
miles from the Mobile and Girard Railroad, 6
miles from Jernigan, a steamboat landing on the
; Chattahoochie river, and 16 miles from Etifaula,
! to which poiat the South-Western Railroad ol
Georgia will soon be completed. For further par

P.S. As 1 am axious io carry out my plans west
