THE CITY.
New Advertisements.
AVe call attention to the advertisement in this
issue of the “Southorn Female College” by Messrs.
Brooks <fc Cox. This institution, under the con
duct of these gentlemen, has won a very high rep
utation throughout this and the adjoining States,
and enjoys now a higher degree of prosperity than
it has known at any period in its history.
The notices of the Female School at AVaverly
Hall and the Marion High School at Buena Vista
in this paper we commend to our readers. They
are both well located, well managed, and are de
serving of public encouragement.
We invite attention to the advertisement of the
Carrollton Masonic Institute, in another column.
As the name indicates, it is under the superintend
ence and control of the Masonic Order. The chair
of President is worthily filled by Mr. John K.
Leak, under whose care the institution has stead
ily advanced from a condition of feebleness to that
of prosperity and influence. It is located in a
community distinguished for its morality. Mr*
Leak is now in our city and would be glad to give
turther information to such as may feel disposed
to patronise the Institution.
Ihe advertisement of Mr. Win. Field will be at
tractive to Cotton Planters, Farmers and Mechan
ics. The public are respectfully invited to call at
the Perry House and examine his various models,
they will be on exhibition for a few days only.
Mr. Phelps, at 88 Broad Street, advertises
a late receipt of valuables—comprising Garden
Seed, Fire Works and a variety of good things,
both for children and adults—male and female.
advertisement of administrator's sale
by Thomas J. Nuckolls, Esq.—the sale to include
all the personal property belonging to the estate
of S. B. Purple, deceased.
Theatre.
To-night Mr. Fleming's excellent Company will
make their last appearance in this city. They
have selected for their farewell performance that
lino old English standard comedy by Massinger,
entitled “A New Way to pay Old Debts,” to be
followed by the favorite farce of “the Toodlcs.”
Wc would be glad to see them have a full house.
The bill deserves one, and the Company also.
Ortou & Older’s Circus.
We learn that the members of this Company
have all been discharged from custody in Tuske
gee, Ala., and will exhibit in this city on Thurs
day or Friday next.

for the times.
Messrs Edieors: —You will please announce me
as a candidate for Marshall of Columbus, at the
ensuing election to be held on the second Satur
day in December.
It is objected to me by some, that I have alrea
dy an office on the railroad. But it should be re
collected that I am a man offamily and have chil
dren growing up. My present position keeps me
from home nearly all my time, and thus my offi
cial duties conflict with those which every father
owes to his family. Married men, especially, will
appreciate this reason for my desire to secure a
station which will allow me to live at home.
R. T. SIMONS.
[communicated]
Messrs. Editors : —As the elections of our city
officers are near at hand, it behooves every good
citizen to examine the claims and canvass the
qualifications of each candidate for office. The
peace quiet and good order of a city of the size of
Columbus depends more upon the Marshal and
his Deputy than all other officers put together,
therefore, the necessity of having these places fill
ed by competent and efficient men, those who will
act prudently, promptly and fearlessly, in the dis
charge of their duties. And without disparaging
the claims of any other seeking the position of
Marshal permit me to say that our fellow citizen
Robt. T. Simons possesses in an eminent degree
the qualifications above indicated for the office, as
the citizens of Columbus are well aware that for
several years back his services have been called
in requisition upon all important and desperate
occasions and w'ith entire success. For these ser
vices and for these reasons he should receive the
office. He has been tried upon various and im
portant occasions and never yet found wanting,
therefore let us rally to his support and then we
may rest assured that the city has at least one
fearless and efficient officer.

taking Pictures in as good style as they can be taken

fifty cents to ten dollars. And although he does not
pretend to say that he is the best artist in the United
States, yet he fears not the result of a comuarison with
those whose reputation is bolstered up by long adver
tisements and puffb of their own manufacture. He
prefers that ladies and gentlemen should judge for
themselves. And if those iu want of a good Picture
will call and give him a trial, he will convince them
that he fhliy understands the modus operand! of picture

he fears no competition from any quarter.

THS CELEBRATED HOLLAND REMEDY FOB
BTSPXmA,
DISEASE OF TOE KIDNEYS.
LIVER COMPLAINT,
WEAKNESS OF ANY KIND,
And the various affections consequent upon a diseased
STATE OF THE LIVEK.
Such as Indigestion, Acidity of the Stomach, Colicky
Pains, Heartburn, Loss of Appetite, Despondency,Cos
tivenes, Blind and Bleeding Piles. In all Nervous,
Rheumatic and Neuralgic Affections, it has in numer
ous instances proved highly beneficial, and in others el
fected a decided cure
This is a purely vegetable compound, prepared on
strictlv scientific principles, after the manner of the
celebrated Holland Professor, Rterhave. Because of
Its great success in most of the European Slates, its in
troduction into the United States was intended more
especially for those of our fatherland scattered here
and there over the face of this mighty country. Meet
ing with great success among them, I now offer it to
the American public, knowing that its truly wonderful
medicinal powers must be acknowledged.
It is particularly recommended to those persons
whose constitutions may have been impaired by the
continuous use of ardent spirits, or other forms of dis
sipation. Generally instantaneous in effect, it finds itu
way directly to the seat of life, thrilling and quickening
every nerve, raising up the drooping spirit, and in fact
infusing new health and vigor in the system.
NOTlCE.—Whoever expects to find this a beverage
will be disappointed; but to the sick, weak, and low
spirited, it will prove a grateful aromatic cordial, pos
sessed of singular remedial properties.
CAUTIO N /
The great popularity of this delightful aroma has in
duced many imitations, which the public should guard
against purchasing. Be not persuaded to buy anything
el°e until you have given Bcerhave’s Holland Bittern a
fair trial. One bottle will convince you how infinitely
superior it is to all these imitations.
