amusement, will see by our advertising columns,
that tut* ex tan si re Circus and Menagerie of Bailey
£ Cu. will exhibit in this city on the 2Stli, 29tb,
4 30th inst. As Christmas is on hand, 4 ‘Young
America” should bee&roful not to spend the lust
half, otherwise they might not get into the show.
The Militart LvsTrrrrr.—Our readers ait
referred to the advertisemont of the Marietta In
stitute. in another column. Being loeax&d in a
delightful and healthful portion of the State, it
.joonuncuds itself to the young men of the State,
a? not only the place where they may secure a
thorough education, but whore they iuav also be
fully indoctrinated in the principles of military
■■ sics, and be fitted lor the “pomp and circuin
- -*> of glorious war.” And in addition to the
ta! and military discipline which may be there
obt lined, it is tho very piace to receive that phys
ical training and stamina which constitutes the
highest specimen of manhood.

A Compliment to Edwaki> Everett.—An ‘
E tigrish-Greek Lexicon, dedicated to Edward j
F.verett, has lately boen published in Greece. The ;
object of the work is to bring English and Aineri- j
can litoraturc into circulation among the Greek ‘
raee, in order to counteract tho flashy and corrupt- *
mg publications with which the French press is
inundating the Levant; in tho words of the au
thor, “to bring the English mind to the door of
the Greek nation.” The author says, in his dedi- |
oation:
“It becomes me to confess, before the whole 1
world, that the principles and ideas by which 1 ;
am guided, in fact every advantage I possess, I .
ow to your beautiful country. Duty commands!
mo to dedicate this work of mine to a citizen of !
the United States of America; and of tho sons of
enlightened worth in that favored region, I pre
set your Excellency for my purpsse. Your warm
patriotism, and the generous sentiment artribat- 1
•] to you on all hands, from the extremities of the
earth, sanction this dedication. The sympathy j
you exhibited, in your political Eiation, in favor
o: my struggling country, is ever before me, and I
embrace with delight this opportunity of making
some 9ign of grateful remembrance.”
Fracas at Wasaixgton. —Fight between Mr.
Montgamerg of J-cnnsylvania, and Mr. English of
Indiana, — Fish, Canes and Bricks, — Washing
ton, December 18.—A difficulty occurred at Ij3o A
M.. this morning, betwern Congressmen English
of Indiana, and Montgomery of Pennsylvania, on
Pennsylvania Avenue.
These two members of Congress happened to
meet for the first time this session, when Mr.
English, extending his hand, said :
“How are you, Mr. Montgomery ?”
Mr. Montgomery withheld his hand, and utter- \
ed an insulting expression, something like—
“l don’t speak to puppies f” j
Whereupon Mr. English struck him a severe
blow over the head, breaking his cane to pieces I
by the blow, and knocking Mr. Montgomery into ]
the gutter, but not entirely down.
Montgomery on rising, hurled a brick at Eng- •
lish, striking him on the boot, but doing no injury
to him.
Mr. English states to his friends that he was j
entirely unarmed, and was not aware that Mom- ]
gotnery had any ill feeling towards him up to the j
time of the rencounter.
Mr. Montgomery, as to strength and size, is su
perior to Mr. English.
The steamer Europa sailed fram New York yes

of passengers for Liverpool.

STATE OF THE LIVER.
Such as Indigestion, Acidity of the Stomach, Colicky
Paine, Heartburn, Loss of Appetite, Despondency,Co*-
tivenes, Blind Htid Bieeding Piles. In all Nervous,
Rheumatic and Neuralgic Affections, it has in numer
ous instances proved highly beneficial, and in others et
ftrted a decided nue.
This is a purely vcgeiable compound, prepared on
strictly scientific principles, after the manner of the
celebrated Holland Professor, Burbave. Because of
its great success in most of the European States, its in
troduction into the UnitPd States was intended more
especially for those of our latherland scattered here
and there over the face of tin# mighty country. Meet
ing with great success among them, I now offer it to
the American public, knowing that its truly wonderful
medicinal pow ers must be acknowledged.
It is particularly recommended to those person*
whose constiiutions mav have been impaired by the
continuous use of ttrdeni spirits, or other lorms of dis
sipation. Generali} instantaneous in ellect, it finds its
way directly to the seat of life, limbing and quickening
every nerVe, raising up the drooping spirit, and in tact
infusing new health and vigor in the sy stem.
NOTlCE.—Whoever expects to find tins a beverage
will be disappointed; but to the sick, w eak, and low
spirited, it will prove a grate ft il aromatic cordial, pos
sessed of singular remedial properties.
CAUTION!
The great popularity of this delightful arrnnu has in
duced many imitations, which the public should guard
against purchasing. Ite not persuaded to buy anything
e:~e untii you have given Bccritave’s Holland Bitters a
fair trial. One bottle w ill convince you how infinitely
superior it is to all these imitations.
